The TV series adaptation of 12 Monkeys has moved one step closer to becoming a reality.  Syfy has greenlit a pilot for the TV adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1995 sci-fi film, with production scheduled to begin in November.  Gilliam is not involved with the TV series, but the show will draw heavily from his feature film as the plot follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race.  Terra Nova and Nikita scribes Terry Matalas and Travis Ficket wrote the pilot script and will serve as co-executive producers.

Casting has yet to begin, but the 60-minute 12 Monkeys pilot is being produced by Universal Cable Productions and Atlas Entertainment.  Should Syfy take a liking to the pilot, we could see a 12 Monkeys TV series on the air come next year.  Hit the jump to read the press release.

SYFY GREENLIGHTS 12 MONKEYS TO PILOT

ATLAS ENTERTAINMENT, PRODUCER OF THE ORIGINAL THEATRICAL FILM, WILL PRODUCE THE SERIES WITH UNIVERSAL CABLE PRODUCTIONS

PRODUCTION SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN NOVEMBER

NEW YORK – August 26, 2013 – Syfy is greenlighting 12 Monkeys, a drama series based on the 1995 Universal Pictures film directed by Terry Gilliam, to pilot.  The 60-minute cast-contingent pilot is being produced by Universal Cable Productions and Atlas Entertainment, producer of the original Bruce Willis-Brad Pitt theatrical.

Based on the classic hit film, 12 Monkeys follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race.

Production is set to begin in November with Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett (Terra Nova, Nikita), who wrote the pilot script, serving as Co-Executive Producers. Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven (American Hustle, Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Richard Suckle (American Hustle, The International), will Executive Produce. Roven produced the original film.

Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett are represented by Manager Brian Lutz.

Lost interest as soon as I saw SyFy…. which seems to pander to the d&d crowd…

I like SyFy actually. Only channel making sci-fi shows. Seems like they’re taking it up a notch too. Looking forward too Alien Hunter, based on Whitley Striebers new novel.

12 Monkeys, now could this act as a sorta sequel, considering how the movie ended? I’d perfer that, with new characters, over a ‘reboot’. Kinda like SG1; a Continuation, except this should follow new characters.

Now, I hold 12 Monkeys as one of the ten best films made in the 1990s, so I’m not really looking to get it remade. A modern TV show will be nowhere close to the mad, manic energy of Brad Pitt and the charisma of a Bruce Willis at the top of his game, stretching his acting legs a bit and playing a variation on his action movie persona that is a lot more sensitive and broken and sad. And I haven’t even gone into Gilliam’s sense of style and the design of the look of the movie.
Those are things the TV show could never hope to replicate, so I hope they don’t try. It’s quite possible we get a decent time travel story out of this, so it could be worthwhile, but do we need it? -Short answer: No.

      true that.

    Since it’s on SyFy, here’s what’ll happen…

There are 12 magical gold monkeys scattered throughout the world that if they are brought all together will open a portal to hell, allowing demons to pour into our universe.

The show will be about the adventures of a quirky, Mulder-type dude, and a no-nonsense Scully-type woman, as they try to find all the golden monkeys before the show’s villain, Lord Disastro, the king of the vampires, can!

Sounds amazing. Will there be a quirky techie guy as well?
He can be called… uh, uhmmm… Semmelweis!

Just ridiculous. 12 Monkey is one of the best films in the 90s and one of the best films related to time travel horror and now they’re making a fuc**ing joke with this planned series. Why goddamnit, why?
