Though Michael Bay was recently reported to be directing the next installment in the Transformers franchise, his next film to hit theaters will be a more down-to-Earth and true-to-life tale. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi tells the story of the members of a security team tasked with surviving the chaotic events after the attack on the United States embassy in Benghazi, Libya in 2012 that led to the death of four Americans, among them Ambassador Chris Stevens.

In a new behind-the-scenes look from Bay himself, we get a glimpse at the relationship that the veteran director has forged with military personnel over the years. While this new featurette doesn't delve into the background of the folks who lost their lives during the 2012 attacks, it does feature Bay and his cast alongside a veritable army of military veterans and film consultants. Personally, I find Bay's bigger blockbuster pictures to be far less interesting than the smaller films he tackles in between, so there's every chance that 13 Hours will prove itself a nice departure from the Transformers films, even if the subject matter is harrowing.

13 Hours, adapted by Chuck Hogan from Mitchell Zuckoff's book, stars John KrasinskiJames Badge Dale, Max Martini, Pablo Schreiber, and David Denman, and will be released January 15, 2016. Watch the new behind-the-scenes featurette from Bay's 13 Hours below:

Here's the official synopsis for 13 Hours:

When everything went wrong, six men had the courage to do what was right.

And for a bit more meat on what the story is really about, here's Zuckoff's book synopsis (via Amazon):

The harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi.

13 HOURS presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack.

13 HOURS sets the record straight on what happened during a night that has been shrouded in mystery and controversy. Written by New York Times bestselling author Mitchell Zuckoff, this riveting book takes readers into the action-packed story of heroes who laid their lives on the line for one another, for their countrymen, and for their country.

13 HOURS is a stunning, eye-opening, and intense book--but most importantly, it is the truth. The story of what happened to these men--and what they accomplished--is unforgettable.
