Regarding the career of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Lord puts it best when he says, “we only do things that seem like they’re going to be terrible.”  Between Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, and The LEGO Movie, the duo have become known for tackling seemingly awful material and spinning it into gold.  It’s not that they only work with bad ideas, they’re just incredibly talented filmmakers not afraid of a challenge.  That’s especially relevant with regards to a third Jump Street movie.  One of the many items to come out of the very unfortunate Sony hack was the potential for a crossover between the Jump Street and Men in Black franchises.  Lord and Miller themselves recently addressed the prospect of combining the franchises and sounded pretty enthusiastic about the idea.  Read on after the jump.

Speaking with MTV, Lord said the two are still enticed by the idea of a 21 Jump Street Men in Black crossover:

“Nothing’s changed.  It’s still a crazy idea.  We only do things that seem like they’re gonna be terrible, so this only makes it more like that.”

When asked if they’ve spoken with Tommy Lee Jones, Lord said they’d be happy to have him be a part of the film, but right now they’re just focused on developing the story:

“We certainly would be blessed to have him be a part of it, but we’re really focusing on just like what’s a great story for Schmidt and Jenko and how to tell the next chapter in their lives, and perhaps use creatures from another world at the same time.”

But none of this means the crossover film is definitely happening (remember, this information came from leaked emails—not any kind of official announcement).  It’s still one idea of many ideas that Lord and Miller are developing, and Miller said as much:

“We’re developing a lot of things and they may or may not all happen, but that’s how the business works.”

Lord and Miller have yet to make a bad movie so I’ll certainly be following them down whatever path they chose for their next feature, but the prospect of the duo tackling live-action sci-fi is particularly fantastic.
