22-Minute Featurette on Creating the World of AVATAR

Avatar is a fairly successful little flick.  It’s gathered a small cult following and is beginning to find a wider audience.  Sorry, that’s an understatement.  Avatar, which won the Golden Globes for Best Director and Best Picture on Sunday, has amassed a box office of $504.8 million domestic and $1.6 billion worldwide.  To put the worldwide gross in perspective, President Obama announced today that he would be asking congress for an additional $1.3 billion for education.  But a movie can’t earn that kind of money if people don’t connect to it and Avatar‘s a film that’s not only raking in cash because of the higher cost of 3D and IMAX tickets, but because people are going back to see it.  As for myself, I’m going to give it a second chance this weekend and see it in IMAX 3D (I previously only saw it in 3D).

Yahoo! Movies just released an impressive 22-minute featurette on the making of the film.  It’s almost like a sneak peek at the kind of in-depth special features fans are hoping will be on the DVD/Blu-ray release.  The featurette looks at the art design, casting, animation, and what I found most interesting, the 3D camera and the “simul-cam”, which allowed Cameron to see the 3D overlaid with the motion capture in real-time.  Even if you’re not a fan of Avatar, it’s a must-watch for fans of film-making.  You can check it out after the jump.

Sky (UK sat tv) also aired an Avatar special and in fact showed some cut scenes (only for 2-3 seconds) from the movie. Look for Avatar.Special.A.New.Dimension and you'll find it.

There was also a scene which never made it in if the yahoo special at one moment in the simlucam you can see the all avatars openly fighting holding machine guns, they make a brief appearance at the end of the movie among those allowed to stay.
