The first trailer and poster for McG‘s 3 Days to Kill, starring Kevin Costner, are now online.  Costner plays an international spy who’s trying to set aside his violent profession in order to reconnect with his estranged wife (Connie Nielsen) and daughter (Hailee Steinfeld), but his handler (Amber Heard) ropes him back into more work for the agency.  The “violent guy with special skills plus estranged daughter” plot will inevitably invite comparisons to Taken, but 3 Days to Kill looks like it has a much lighter tone and more absurd action (although it will be tough to top Taken 2‘s scene where grenades are used to calculate distance).

3 Days to Kill opens February 21, 2014.  Hit the jump to watch the trailer and check out the poster.

Here’s the official synopsis for 3 Days to Kill:

In this heart pounding action-thriller, Kevin Costner is a dangerous international spy, who is determined to give up his high stakes life to finally build a closer relationship with his estranged wife and daughter, whom he’s previously kept at arm’s length to keep out of danger. But first, he must complete one last mission- even if it means juggling the two toughest assignments yet: hunting down the world’s most ruthless terrorist and looking after his teenage daughter for the first time in ten years, while his wife is out of town.

God, this looks terrible. And good lord, Amber Heard is hot, but her acting is just cringe-worthy a lot of times. Really, she’s a handler for a spy agency? Who buys actually buys that…

The Taken comparison is very apt and also depressing considering Luc Besson is also credited as a writer on 3 Days to Kill.

Taken + Escape from New York.

why is McG still directing? Even Michael Bay has made 2 good movies. The only thing close to watchable on Mcg resume is Charlie’s Angels. It takes a passionate direfto to make a B movie fun. Mcg is a producer hack who rides on credibility of others.

Bay has made two good movies? that’s news to me.

uh, Bad Boys and The Rock

      • RiddleThemThis

No love for Bad Boys II?

      • George Otwori

Bad Boy II was fun but way over the top and nearly wasted the best thing from the first one. Which was the chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Also at this point its where Michael Bay started letting technical aspects outshine character and storytelling.

they are watchable but certainly not good. he has two watchable films, go Bay!

    Taken 3. Meh…

    wow that looks awful

  • mattinacan

wow McG is a really terrible director. How guys like him, Ratner, Paul WS Anderson, Bay are allowed to continue to ruin hollywood is beyond me.

At least all those directors films make money or break even at the box office (not saying they are great directors). McG can’t even do that any more. So I get it from a financial stand point from a studio when they green light one of their films. McG on the other hand its like they are just ready to right off their losses.

I have faith in Costner! guy has done some solid work.

I love Costner but this doesn’t look promising.

How does McG still keep getting work? Honestly, Terminator: Salvation had a decent idea/story and he fucked it all up by giving none of characters any depth and lost what the central theme that the writers had come up with. And the film some how cost $200M to make. $200M!!! I’ve seen films w half the budget look better. Then came This Means War and I couldn’t even get through it before I turned it off on HBO. I was hoping Tom Hardy’s character would just snap Reese Witherspoons character over his knee Bane Style. It’s like he wanted to some make a watered down version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and succeeded. He’s a poor mans Michael Bay. And that sentence alone is just ridiculous. How he attracts talent to his films is beyond me.

He’s getting less-and-less work, of diminishing status. Can you picture McG now getting a Terminator movie to direct? Or being mentioned as a potential Superman director? His time has passed, he’ll likely be working in TV for the forseeable.

  • Julio Navas

What else you could´ve expected from the director of ¨This Means War¨. This guy does knows how to waste talent (Bale, Whiterspoon,Pine, Hardy, Kostner, Nielsen, Steinfield).

    • Bloost

      Witherspoon has no talent.

  • AdamK

Didn’t realize the Jack Ryan prequel would be out so soon.

Looks like a bit of fun. We need more Costner, he was the best thing about Man Of Steel.

    • The Flobbit

That distinction belongs to Michael Shannon…
