“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” opens July 15th. The opening 12 minutes have been converted into IMAX 3D. While everyone wants to see the boy wizard on the huge IMAX screen and in 3D…due to Harry Potter’s release date getting pushed back last year and “Transformers Revenge of the Fallen” having a 4 week IMAX contract, only three IMAX theaters in the United States are playing the film opening day. The rest of the country will have to wait until July 29th.
While this news has already been reported, I have an update. I’ve put together which IMAX theaters are getting the film opening day and they’re the Century City IMAX (Los Angeles), Henry Crown (Chicago), and AMC Loews Lincoln Square (NYC). So if you live in any of these cities and want to see “Harry Potter” opening day, you might want to buy your tickets now. The L.A. one is on sale here – MovieTickets.com. Also, IMAX.com sells tickets so you can check there.

I’m thinking the Chicago location won’t be showing 3D. Is that correct?

I think they will show it in 3D. I just emailed IMAX asking your question. If I get a NO response I will update the story. Otherwise, answer is yes.

You should point out that the Century City location is the fake Imax.

FYI I pre-purchased tix for the Imax at Lincoln Square. It’s being sold as the Imax Experience, not the Imax 3D Experience, which leads me to doubt that it will even be on the big screen there, let alone the 3D. Any word on whether this is the case? Note: They’re still charging $18.50 for whatever it is that’s going to be shown.
Penny,
The IMAX and Lincoln Square will have the 3D version. The site doesn’t say it, but it will be.

Hey don’t forget about the new IMAX in Seattle. Regal Cinemas Thornton Place Stadium 14 and IMAX. We are getting Harry Potter in IMAX 3D. It’s gonna rock!
Yes, but on opening day? Doubtful. I’ll wait to see it at the far superior Lincoln Square Cinemas in Bellevue, WA (no, I don’t work for them).

Just found out that the Henry Crown IMAX Theatre at the Museum of Science and Industry is a 2D Dome theatre. The Century City and Lincoln Square theatres are both 3D capable, so those two will present the opening sequence in IMAX 3D. Another reason to wait till July 29th…

My IMAX theater is playing it…
I live in Las Vegas, and three IMAX theaters here are going to have the film opening day. I don’t know why this article says only three of them nationwide are playing the film its first day, that’s just stupid.
No, they aren’t-they will only have it on conventional screens in Vegas on opening day. IMAX opens on the 29th.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =[

Thank you for the tip. The Henry Crown in Chicago is the OMNimax at the Museum of Science & Industry. The screen is rounded out and should make for quite the unique viewing experience. The really hardcore HP fan can check out the Harry Potter exhibit currently housed at the museum for a few bucks more.

Haven’t we waited long enough?? Why do we have to wait even longer??

It’s so hard to find the info online… is it ONLY the first 12 minutes in 3D?? Because that would be LAME. In Order of the Phoenix the climax was in 3D. I assumed it would be the same here??

I’m hearing that Branson, Missouri is also showing the film in IMAX today. Is this true? If so, why do they get it so early? That’s not fair.
