Release Dates for Jackie Robinson Biopic, 42 and Animated Films ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH, TRICK OR TREATERS, LEO THE LION and SANTAPPRENTICE

Here’s a look at some new release dates, including the Jackie Robinson biopic, 42 and a slew of animated features:

  • 42, directed by Brian Helgeland and starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford, will debut on April 12th, 2013, the 66th anniversary of “Jackie Robinson Day,” the day of his first game as a Brooklyn Dodger.
  • Escape from Planet Earth, featuring the voices of Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, Brendan Fraser, James Gandolfini, Craig Robinson and Rob Corddry opens February 14th, 2013.
  • Leo the Lion lands on August 20th, 2013.
  • The Trick of Treaters debuts in time for Halloween on October 25th, 2013.
  • In another animated holiday feature, Santapprentice will follow up with a December 6th, 2013 release date.

Deadline reported escape-from-planet-earth-scorchthe release dates for a quartet of animated films from The Weinstein Co.  Leo the Lion stars a vegetarian lion who is cast out by his fellow felines.  The Trick or Treaters follows a gang of villains robbing from country folks until they’re charmed by an orphan girl.  Santapprentice tells of the story of (yet another) orphan chosen to replace a retiring Santa Claus. Gary, a friendly alien and failed inventor from Planet Baab travels to earth to find his wife and daughter who crashed while on the way to an intergalactic gymnastics meet.  Upon his arrival, Gary is captured by humans and sent to the secret alien prison known as “Area 51.”  Gary makes friends with a rag tag hilarious group of fellow alien inmates and plots the greatest jailbreak in the history of the universe, all the while, distracting his human captors with wild and crazy inventions and resisting oddball brainwashing.  Will Gary and the other aliens escape Area 51?  Will he find his family again and return safely to planet Baab?  Only time and one amazing adventure will tell!

BURBANK, CA, April 23, 2012jackie-robinson-42 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are teaming up with director Brian Helgeland for “42,” the story of baseball great Jackie Robinson.  Slated for release on April 12, 2013, the film will open in time to commemorate the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson Day—April 15, the date of his first game as a Brooklyn Dodger—and on the heels of the opening of the 2013 Major League Baseball season.  The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

“42” will star Academy Award® nominee Harrison Ford (“What Lies Beneath,” “Air Force One,” “Witness”) as the innovative Dodger’s general manager Branch Rickey, the MLB executive who first signed Robinson to the minors and then helped to bring him up to the show, and Chadwick Boseman (“The Express”) as Robinson, the heroic African American who was the first man to break the color line in the big leagues.  The film also stars Nicole Beharie (“Shame”) as Rachel Isum, who would become Robinson’s wife, as well as Christopher Meloni (upcoming “Man of Steel”) and T.R. Knight (TV’s “Grey’s Anatomy”).

“42” is set to start production on May 14 in Birmingham, Alabama, with jackie-robinson-biopic-42additional locations to include Macon and Atlanta, Georgia, and Chattanooga Tennessee, where the production will mount much of the film’s baseball action at Engel Stadium, double for Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field.

Academy Award® winner Helgeland (“L.A. Confidential”) will direct from his own screenplay.  Thomas Tull will produce, with Dick Cook, Jon Jashni, and Jason Clark executive producing.  Oscar® nominee Don Burgess (“Forrest Gump”) is the director of photography, Richard Hoover (HBO’s “Temple Grandin”) is production designer, and Caroline Harris (“A Knight’s Tale”) is the costume designer.
