GRACEPOINT Recap: “Episode Five”

by     Posted 28 minutes ago

gracepoint-recap-episode-five

According to the ratings, I’m not the only one who has been finding Gracepoint a bit of a slog.  Though its British forebear, Broadchurch, already has a second season in the works, that future looks unlikely for Gracepoint.  But Fox will probably air the rest of its episodes, just because it doesn’t have any reason not to (it’s only ten weeks, the episodes have already been produced, and with the holidays coming up, there aren’t going to be any major scheduling changes at this point).  At the same time, “Episode Five” is actually where Gracepoint has started to make its turn.  For those of us sticking with it, it could possibly  prove to be worthwhile, after all.  Hit the jump if your only alibi is a book.

Jake Gyllenhaal Talks NIGHTCRAWLER, the Reaction to His Character, How Working as a Producer Changed His Acting Approach, EVEREST, SOUTHPAW, and More

Jake-Gyllenhaal-Nightcrawler-interview

In theaters this weekend is Nightcrawler, the stunning feature debut from writer/director Dan Gilroy.  The film centers on Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) an ambitious and morally malformed young man looking to find his fortune.  When Bloom stumbles onto the world of “nightcrawlers”, film crews who capture footage of violent tragedies and sell them to the highest bidder, he finally finds his calling.  While Gyllenhaal has always stood tall among his peers as a brave and capable actor, his work in Nightcrawler sets a new standard. Bloom is chilling, charming, and the perfect representation of what happens when the American Dream turns nightmarish.

I recently sat down with Gyllenhaal for an exclusive video interview.  He talked about how people have reacted the complicated character of Lou Bloom, how working as producer changed his approach as an actor, if he wants to move into directing, and what’s coming up in 2015 like Everest, Southpaw, and Demolition.  Hit the jump to watch.

Jamie Chung and Genesis Rodriguez Talk BIG HERO 6, Their Close They Are To Their Characters, and Their Upcoming Projects

big-hero-6-jamie-chung-interview

From Walt Disney Animation Studios, Big Hero 6 follows robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) who, after a tragic event, turns to inflatable and huggable robot companion Baymax (Scott Adsit).  With a dangerous plot unfolding on the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro transforms a group of like-minded friends – adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago (Jamie Chung), precision freak Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (T.J. Miller) – into high-teach heroes determined to solve the mystery and save the day.

At the film’s press day, voice co-stars Genesis Rodriguez and Jamie Chung spoke at a roundtable interview about how much they got to see of their characters while they were recording the voices, how similar they are to the characters they brought to life (Genesis Rodriguez was actually even on her high school robotics team), how important it is to them that there are two very smart women in the film, telling an emotional story that’s very relatable, their action figures, that the finished film actually brought them to tears, how much improvisation they did, where they’d like to see their characters go in future films, and how strange it is to be a Disney character.  Genesis also spoke about the Kevin Smith trilogy of films that she’s a part of, while Jamie spoke about her Hulu series, produced by Elizabeth Banks.

New STARRY EYES Trailer Is a Good Primer For a Great Movie

Those of you who read my last Starry Eyes post on the film’s initial teaser trailer (check that out here) know that I have strong feelings about this movie.  I won’t repeat all of them here, but I flat out love this thing.  That being said, I only recommend this new trailer to people who are still making up their mind about seeing it.  It’s very good and it certainly won’t spoil anything, but the movie itself is much more sublime and atmospheric.  A pretty good trailer for a great movie can sometimes do it a disservice in that regard.  But if you need to get a sense of the film’s plot before you commit, by all means check it out.

Starry Eyes comes from the writing/directing team of Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer and stars Alex Essoe, Noah SeganAmanda Fuller and Pat Healy.  It was produced by Travis Stevens‘ Snowfort Pictures and hits theaters and VOD on November 14th.  As I always say about this movie,  be there.  Or be home.  But be watching it.  Hit the jump for the full trailer.

My Favorite Halloween Movie: TRICK ‘R TREAT

[Since Halloween is this week, Adam, Matt, and I decided to write a bit about the films we watch annually to celebrate the holiday.  Click here for Adam's pick, and click here for Matt's pick.]

I watch a lot of horror movies, whether it’s Halloween or not.  It’s my genre of choice so I’m extremely guilty of watching and re-watching favorites like Scream, The Mist, Poltergeist, The Descent, A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, just to name a select few.  Any movie with bumps in the night, creatures and/or serial killers can be branded a Halloween-appropriate film, but because my days are filled with blood and guts year-round, on the holiday, I like to go with one of the best Halloween-themed films out there, Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat.  Find out more after the jump.

Mitch Hurwtiz Editing ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Season 4 Into a Linear Story, But We Might Never See It

arrested-development-season-4-recut

I didn’t dislike Season 4 of Arrested Development, but I didn’t come even remotely close to loving it the way I did the first three seasons of the show during its initial run.  A lot of that had to do with the fact that, due to cast availability, not a lot of the actors were always available to be in the same place at the same time.  So many of the episodes were standalone pieces that would focus on a single character.  Also a problem?  The lack of a runnng time limitation.  I think Arrested Development was at its best when it was busting at the seams trying to fit into those 22 network mandated minutes.  When the show had the freedom to stretch episodes out to the 40 minute mark, it felt a bit flabby.

But now it feels like series creator Mitch Hurwitz is taking steps towards mitigating one (if not both) of those issues.  Hit the jump for more on the Arrested Development Season 4 recut and why there’s a chance it might not even come out.

Rumor: WONDER WOMAN Is a 1920s-Set Prequel That Kicks Off a Trilogy

The superhero arms race continues.  Warner Bros. announced its slate of DC Comics adaptations through the year 2020 recently, and then earlier this week Marvel Studios responded by announcing its own slate through the year 2019.  As WB has now started moving forward with a number of upcoming films, rumors have begun to swirl about the third DC movie in line after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, the Wonder Woman movie set for release in 2017.  Specifically, these new rumors claim that the first Wonder Woman will be a prequel set in the 1920s and will kick off a trilogy of Wonder Woman films.  More after the jump, including the film that Gal Gadot recently had to pass on due to her DC obligations.

The Gang Battles Antonio Banderas as Superheroes in New THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER Trailer and Poster

Paramount Pictures has released a new The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water trailer and poster for the upcoming sequel, which mixes traditional animation, CG animation, and live-action as the Nickelodeon characters wreak havoc on dry land.  The story finds SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy the Squirrel surfacing in order to track down the stolen formula for Mr. Crabs’ beloved Krabby Patties.  As it turns out, it’s been stolen by a menacing pirate/aspiring chef played by Antonio Banderas.  It’s kind of sad to see a traditionally animated show embracing the CG era, but I wonder how fans of the Nick series (ie. children) will react to the new format.

Check out the new The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water trailer after the jump, along with a new poster.  The film features the voices of Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, and Douglas LawrenceThe SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water opens in 3D on February 6, 2015.

The Weinstein Company is putting together a film called Lion and even though there’s still no director attached, they likely won’t have a tough time attracting top talent because Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel are all on board.  It’s being reported that they’ll lead the big screen adaptation of the true story chronicled in the Vanity Fair article, “A Home at the End of Google Earth.”  The piece tells the story of a five-year-old boy lost in Calcutta who’s adopted by an Australian couple.  It isn’t until he graduates college that he decides it’s time to trace his roots and he opts to use Google Earth to do it.

Jackman and Kidman will portray the couple while Patel will take the role of the boy, Saroo Munshi.  Hit the jump for more on Lion.

The team behind the Evil Dead remake is getting back together, but it’s not for a sequel.  Ghost House Pictures announced today that Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will reunite with writing partners Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues on the thriller A Man in the Dark.  Alvarez and Sayagues wrote the 2013 Evil Dead remake, which Raimi and Tapert produced and Alvarez directed, and they will all assume those same roles on this new film.  The story revolves around three teens with a penchant for robbery who set their sights on one last score: a reclusive blind man with millions of dollars in hiding.  Once they break into his home, however, they find themselves trapped and fighting for survival against a psychopath with secrets of his own.

Seth Rogen Eyed to Play Steve Wozniak Opposite Christian Bale’s Steve Jobs; Jessic Chastain Sought for Role

With Christian Bale now firmed up to play Steve Jobs in director Danny Boyle’s (Slumdog Millionaire) biopic for Sony, the rest of the cast is starting to come together.  Aaron Sorkin’s script for the film is not your traditional biopic, and instead is comprised of three long scenes that revolve around three major product launches: the Mac in 1984, the NeXT in 1996, and the iPod in 2001.  While Bale’s Jobs will no doubt be the central focus of the film, it appears that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak also figures into some of these scenes, as word comes that none other than Seth Rogen may take on the role of Wozniak in the film.  More after the jump.

J.J. Abrams Shot One Sequence in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII in IMAX

Earlier this year, J.J. Abrams tweeted a picture of an IMAX camera from the set of Star Wars: Episode VII.  We knew the majority of the film was being shot in 35mm, but if you were hoping for IMAX to be a large (no pun intended) part of the movie, you’re going to be disappointed.

In an article largely about Interstellar and its use of IMAX, Variety dropped in a small tidbit from Episode VII:  “The benefits outweigh the headache of shooting on Imax cameras,” says Abrams, who used them for a single sequence in “Star Wars.” “The opportunity to have an action sequence for this movie done in Imax’s natural format was too delicious an idea to pass up. As a filmgoer, it’s something I want to see.”  Hit the jump for more.  Star Wars: Episode VII opens December 18, 2015.
