Keanu Reeves Is Once Again the Chosen One in First Trailer for 47 RONIN

     July 24, 2013

Universal has released the first trailer for director Carl Rinsch’s upcoming fantasy-adventure 47 Ronin.  The film stars Keanu Reeves and centers on a troupe of banished samurai who long to restore their honor and find vengeance against the treacherous Lord Kira (played by Tadanobu Asano) who was responsible for the death of their master.  As you’ll see from the trailer, there’s a heavy supernatural element as well, and sadly, it doesn’t do much for me.  The classic historical tale of Chūshingura seems to be dwarfed by special effects, and not particularly imaginative ones at that (swooshing fabric turns into monsters).  I want to be convinced this could be a good movie, but trailers that try to turn kazoos into rock music are a bit of turn-off.

Here’s the official synopsis for 47 Ronin:

Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 Ronin. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors.

As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity.

    wow looks bad!!!

  • The Hobbit

    OK…This could be a fun Movie…

  • Faptain America

It actually looks decent. Won’t win any awards for dialogue delivery when Keanu Reeves is the best English-speaking actor in there. But it looks like a nice story, with some distinctive visual effects.

  • joe

    Actually looks really good!

  • Shawn Pardu Hays

  • Alex

It actually looks better than many fantasy-adventure movies that came out recently, like Jack The Giant Killer and Snow White and the Huntsman for example.

    • Lex Walker

      Pretty low bars…

  • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

Keanu reeves is such a bad actor
This will flop. The hobbit in his second week will eat this movie alive

    • tensaip

The Hobbit will, of course, also flop.

  • Munier Sharrieff

    Somebody was watching “Ninja Scroll”.

  • Dan

This looks like it could be a lot of fun. I’ll give it a chance.

  • King of the Desert

A test screening was done for this about two or three months ago and the reception after was laughably bad.

  • Edill

47 Ronin? Hollywood went off the rails on this legend.

  • Nyckage

What the bloody hell is this. Which shumck decided for Reeves to reprise his role in the Matrix.

  • goop

Why not just tell the true story of the 47 Ronin? Why dress it up when it’s already an incredibly crazy story? They should have done this in the recent Takashi Miike style like 13 Assassins and Death of a Samurai with minor changes to suit American audiences. What a missed opportunity.

    • tensaip

As if Americans would buy $100 million worth of box office for a movie with a 100% Asian cast!

      • goop

I think American audiences are proving every year that they’re more inclined to do things that we hadn’t done before. Every year we get movies and tv shows with more and more diverse casts. Every year we see movies with subtitles getting more and more attention (The Raid is a great example). So I think it’s fair to say that every year we’re becoming smarter/more open minded movie watchers. Just look at the success of Fruitvale Station, a nearly all black and latino cast up until the final act, and it’s tearing it up.

I probably haven’t convinced you of anything, and that’s ok. I just think you underestimate the power of story over spectacle. But most American moviegoers don’t, they prefer story, and I think all of the recent big budget bombs have proven that.

Keanu Reeves must fire his agent. Probably Japan declare us war because of this awful movie.

    • Lex Walker

Actually, Keanu Reeves was the driving force behind this movie getting made at all. He’s the one who wanted it.

  • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

Another movie where the white man helps the native and save the day

    • tensaip

Keanu’s character actually is Japanese, but mixed (not unlike himself).

  • Kriptonian Knight

    I wasn’t expecting the J.K Rowling version of 47 Ronin. Very curious…

do you always post the same comment on the same story on screen rant and collider?

      • Kryptonian Knight

        Stop stalking me creep!

  • ReaperXXIV

47 Samurai fighting an evil empire in a Asian infused Middle Earth…I honestly expected it to look worse and clearly the fabric isn’t turning into a “monster” like you have apparently seen over and over again but into a dragon, you know because of the Japanese setting and story telling.

  • Yurine

I wish Keanu was a producer and not an actor in this.

  • Nathaniel Haywood

Looks interesting – like a martial arts/samurai movie set in Middle Earth with a dash of Harry Potter for good measure. Interesting. I know people love to dog on Keanu Reeves (myself included) because he’s not a great actor, but this type of movie could work well for him. He didn’t have to be Oscar-worthy for the first Matrix to be good, after all. I’m just glad he’s pushing to get some martial arts movies playing in the US (this and Man of Tai Chi).

(For the people saying this is another “white man coming to Asia to save the day” movie, I see your point. I will say, though, that Keanu is 1/4 Chinese and 1/4 Hawaiian. Not the same as a “100% Asian actor,” but it seems to be that he may at least have some personal/cultural connections that make him interested in this subject matter. Or I could be totally wrong…who knows. He’s got some diversity, though – maybe even enough to make this role acceptable? )

    • tensaip

which technically makes Keanu not White

  • ervin

i just love how after watching a clip of a movie with dragon in it (just to name one thing) people bitch about keanu not being asian enough.. it’s a movie, and it looks like it’s going to be entertaining. i was expecting something different, grittier maybe, but i liked what i saw. as far as reeves being a bad actor, i would never go that far, naturalistic yes, but bad – hell no.

  • noby

seriously…. why the haters on this. why can’t anyone say anything good any more? So sick of all the ‘easy to dish’ criticism from smart asses who cant do anything worthwhile themselves. Go get of your computer, make a movie yourself then you can complain, friggin armchair critics. sick of ‘em. How would you feel if no-one tried to make anything any more? Better? Would that satisfy your stupid little egos? STFU.

  • GH

Well, why don’t you just shut the f**k up, Goldberg? This film has a solid supporting cast, the costumes look great, the action looks stylish and cool, and the cinematography is amazing.

I think this has promise yet.

  • Strong Enough

    this year’s Immortals

  • Joe

So Matt was turned off by 15 secs of kazoo in a quite brilliant 2:29 min trailer (I actually timed it).

Why hasn’t this guy lost reviewing credibility yet?

  • Arnold

Jack Ryan will beat this once the trailer comes out

  • Al Conyado

This looks bloody incredible!! Reminds me of Ninja Scroll and Ninja Gaiden!!

  • Jeremy D

I think it looks really enjoyable! I have a feeling critics will hate it, but I do want to see it. Keanu is such a great guy how can you not?
