There’s some positive buzz going on for Jonathan Levine’s 50/50 (I know Steve saw it and really dug it).  Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a young man who gets cancer and while that seems like weighty material, the movie balances it with some raunchy humor.  The flick’s also got a strong supporting cast that includes Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anna Kendrick, and Anjelica Huston.   And now Summit Entertainment is holding some advanced screenings to build the buzz even more.  Collider’s going to help you get into one of these screenings.  We’ve got 100 tickets to give away for each screening of 50/50 in Austin, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC.  All of the screenings are on August 30th except for Austin which is on August 29th.

Hit the jump for the details.

Here’s the official synopsis for 50/50:

Inspired by personal experiences, 50/50 is an original story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen star as best friends whose lives are changed by a cancer diagnosis in this new comedy directed by Jonathan Levine from a script by Will Reiser.

“We worked with Will on Da Ali G show, and it was shortly after that we learned he was sick.”  Rogen recalls.  “As shocking, sad, confusing and generally screwed up as it was; we couldn’t ignore that because we were so ill-equipped to deal with the situation, funny things kept happening. Will got better, and when he did, we thought the best way to pull something good out of the situation was to get him to write a screenplay. Ideally we wanted to make a film that would be as funny, sad, and hopefully as honest as the experience we went through. As soon as the script was completed, it quickly became a passion project for all of us.  It helped us come to terms with Will’s struggle as well as our own experiences.”

50/50 is the story of a guy’s transformative and, yes, sometimes funny journey to health – drawing its emotional core from Will Reiser’s own experience with cancer and reminding us that friendship and love, no matter what bizarre turns they take, are the greatest healers.

I tried to register with the ticket site, but apparently I don’t meet the age requirement… What’s up with that? I’m 31, do I need to be younger or older than that to see this movie?

First, I just want to say that this is definitely a movie you don’t want to miss. Although the film is full of humor, it does handle the serious issue of cancer with a deft touch and true emotion.

Second, for those that are curious to know when to arrive, my advice (because I’ve been in your shoes) is to make note of the screening time. Most of these will occur in the middle of the week, and this isn’t a film people are going to line up in the middle of the day for.

However, people DO line up early for free screenings, even if they have no clue what it is. So, if it is around 7pm, you may want to get there by 5:30, at the latest. That will get you a decent seat and a spot in the theater at the very least. Two hours early if you want a good seat.

Be kind to the people that run these events. You’re getting in for free, and early. Also realize that most of the time, the film starts without any previews.
