Sony has released the first official US trailer for The 5th Wave. Based on Rick Yancey’s book series of the same name, The 5th Wave is set a world devastated by an alien invasion. As we see played out in the trailer, the first wave sees the alien invaders known only as the “Others” knock out the world’s power. The second wave brings tsunamis that wipe out the coasts. A deadly plague wipes out the majority of the Earth’s human population in the third wave, and the fourth sees the Others take to the ground to eliminate the remaining survivors.
Directed by J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed), the film follows Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Grace Moretz) as she contends with the fifth wave, trying to survive in the wasteland of the ravaged earth. The Others can now inhabit human hosts as part of their final extermination process, and the survivors learn to trust no one. However, when Cassie meets Evan Walker (Alex Roe), she’s forced to reconsider her tactics so she can track down her little brother Sammy (Zackary Arthur).

This trailer kind of took me by surprise. I like it a lot more than I expected. It has a lot of the YA hallmarks — kids toting heavy artillery, sexy fight training, a teen on a mission to save the world — but it looks like The Fifth Wave has the promise to be more The Hunger Games than Divergent. The YA trademarks are combined with a healthy dose of destruction porn, which if audiences haven’t entirely wearied of either trend, could lead to beacoup bucks at the box office. And credit where credit’s due, that shot of the plane dropping from the sky is something straight out of one of my nightmares and gave me a full-body case of the chills. Consider my interest officially piqued.
