Sony has released the first The 5th Wave trailer online. Based on the Rick Yancey book series of the same name, The 5th Wave introduces a world caught in the midst of an alien invasion. As the trailer painstakingly details, the first wave perpetrated by invaders known only as the “Others” knock out the world's power. During the second, tsunamis wipe out the coasts. A deadly plague that wipes out the majority of the Earth’s human population serves as the third wave, and the fourth sees the Others on the ground, targeting survivors.

We find Chloe Grace Moretz’s Cassie Sullivan in the midst of the fifth wave, laying low and trying to survive on her own. Survivors learn not to trust anyone since the Others can now inhabit human hosts as part of their final extermination process. However, when Cassie meets Evan Walker (Alex Roe), she’s forced to reconsider her tactics so she can track down her little brother Sammy (Zackary Arthur).

You might write this one off as another Hunger Games wannabe - it certainly does have the young adult, dystopian angle covered - but it appears to have more in common with recent alien invasion flicks. Judging from the trailer, The 5th Wave has hints of Stephenie Meyer's The Host, the 2011 sci-fi/horror film The Darkest Hour, and even the TV series Falling Skies. That being said, if it feels like a conglomeration of other works, it doesn't bode too well for it standing apart from the crowd. You can judge for yourself below.
