Opening tomorrow, in limited release, is director Oren Moverman's (The Messenger) fantastic new movie, Rampart. Led by a brillaint Woody Harrelson, Rampart is about a corrupt cop whose past is finally catching up with him in the wake of a department-wide corruption scandal. The film also stars Sigourney Weaver, Robin Wright, Steve Buscemi, Cynthia Nixon, Ben Foster, Anne Heche, Ice Cube, and Ned Beatty.

Recently, I got to speak with Harrelson. We talked about how he got involved in the project, what is was like to try and stick to the script while also finding the truth in the moment, what did he think of the film when he first saw it, filming on location in Los Angeles during the day, karaoke (he sings some Queen), and whether or not he can still dunk a basketball. In addition, Harrelson talked about The Hunger Games and Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths. Hit the jump to watch.

Woody Harrelson

What is his karaoke song. And he sings part of it!
Can he still dunk a basketball
How did he first get involved in Rampart
What is it like to try and stick to the script while also finding the truth in the moment
What did he think of the movie when he first saw it
What was it like to film the movie on location in Los Angeles during the day. It's a film noir but set during the day
Talks about Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths and how he first met him
What can he tell the fans about The Hunger Games

Gary Oldman wrapped up his 3-day, 7-film retrospective at New York's Landmark Sunshine Cinema with a fun, extended Q&A after Wednesday night's screening of his Oscar-nominated performance in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The first time Academy Award nominee fielded questions from a theater filled with hundreds of his fans with nearly an hour. Oldman also hung around for autographs, pictures and additional questions. Hit the jump for stories from the set of The Dark Knight Rises, his paralyzing doubt on Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and what he thought while watching Heath Ledger as The Joker.

The event, co-sponsored by Focus Features (Tinker Tailor's distributor) and WNYC (public radio) is one of several recent 3-day retrospectives of Oldman's work in Los Angeles and San Francisco, held in conjunction with the film's nationwide rollout. Sid & Nancy, JFK, The Contender, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Prick Up Your Ears and State Of Grace all screened in the days and hours before Wednesday night's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy showing.

The film is the latest adaptation of John Le Carre's novel. Sir Alec Guinness (Star Wars, Lawrence Of Arabia) preceded Oldman in the role of spy George Smiley, to huge success in a 1979 miniseries based on the book and a follow-up miniseries Smiley's People in 1982. The new version features several generations of elite UK actors, including John Hurt, Oldman, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy. The plot is a jigsaw puzzle of espionage, murder, and double agents. Any real explanation ...

If you ever watched TV's Friday Night Lights, then you're probably already a Taylor Kitsch fan. You know he's got the charm and acting chops to carry a film, and he's carrying two blockbusters this year. First up is Andrew Stanton's John Carter, based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel A Princess of Mars. Kitsch plays John Carter, a Civil War veteran who finds him transported to the surface of Mars and thrown into a new civil war, but this it's between nine-foot-tall green aliens and princesses who literally bleed blue. While on the film's set, we talked to Kitsch about finding the balance between everyman and action hero, being the audience surrogate, working with director and co-writer Stanton, acting in physical environment as opposed to a green-screen soundstage, and more.

Hit the jump to check out the interview. John Carter opens March 9th.

Question: You look pretty beaten up. How much of this is what youactually look like right now and how much is makeup?

TAYLOR KITSCH: I feel worse than I look, so what does that tell you? No, I mean I think getting into it you just try to prep as much as you can and get ready for the adventure, you know? Like I said, it’s just a lot of mental [strain] too. If you keep telling yourself “You’re beat” or this and that, you’re going to fall into that trap. You just try to stay positive really.

Making the move from directing animation to live-action was the big question facing Andrew Stanton when I visited the set of John Carter in April 2010. Stanton had already delivered two amazing Pixar movies with Finding Nemo and WALL-E, but he headed to Mars with John Carter and Mars was a mix of live-action and CG. Stanton was refreshingly honest about the transition and how the two mediums compare. He also talked about his frustrations with the live-action process, how the film isn't in post-production but "Principal Digital Photography", the process of adapting the book, trying to flesh out the main characters, where they're at with the planned sequels, and more.

Hit the jump to check out the interview. John Carter opens in 3D on March 9th.

Question: It seems like the mini-sandstorm outside has kind of quieted down.

ANDREW STANTON: It's kind of overcast now. We've switched to setting up for dusk.

Isn't that a good thing?

STANTON: No, because you can always change -- You can't add shadows. If you really want to get dimensional lighting, you want nice, hard shadows. Overcast isn't our friend. You can always make the sky a little different or tone it down, but you can't do that much. We wait for bright sunlight. Hard, hot Martian sun.

I think you're the first person we've talked to that's not completely beaten up.

STANTON: Really?

And you seem so energetic. How do you keep that up with everything that's going on?

STANTON: Everyone says that and I think you caught me ...

Tharks, the green-skinned, six-limbed creatures living on Mars in John Carter are about nine feet tall. Great actors though they are, Willem Dafoe and Thomas Haden Church, are not nine feet tall. Even though they're wearing the standard motion-capture grey leotards and tracking dots, there's no accounting for height…unless you add stilts. Watching Dafoe and Church march around on stilts is one of the high-lights of any set visit I've gone to.

With a sandstorm whipping into our faces and into our microphones, my fellow movie journalists and I spoke to Dafoe and Church on the set of John Carter. In addition to talking about the stilts, we spoke about the scene they were currently filming, their characters, how doing motion-capture on set helped their performances, and more. Hit the jump to check out the interview. John Carter opens in 3D on March 9th.

Question: I saw you walking on the stilts. How long did that take you to master?

WILLEM DAFOE: It’s a work in progress, but we got a little time before to rehearse and so you just keep it up. But each time it’s a new challenge because the terrain’s different, the quality of the sand’s different, but it’s very important because that height relationship not only helps technically with direct eye lines when mixing effect-oriented stuff with real actors, but also you find the voice much better and you play the scenes much better when you’re that character.

What made you want to take this role to ...

Andrew Stanton's John Carter is based off the novel A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Lynn Collins plays the novel's eponymous princess, Dejah Thoris. But rather than a damsel in distress waiting for the Earthman John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) to come to her rescue, she can hold her own and kick some ass. When I went to the set of John Carter with some of my fellow movie bloggers, Collins spoke to us about her martial arts training, Dejah's fighting style training, the three hours it takes to cover her body in intricate tattoos, what the tattoos mean, and more. "John Carter" may be the title of the movie, but don't be surprised if we're paying just as much attention to the Princess of Mars.

Hit the jump to check out the interview. John Carter opens in 3D on March 9th.

Question: So how are you geared up for the fights?

LYNN COLLINS: I'll let you see part of the costume. As you can see, there's not much of it. The tattoos are being rubbed off because of the armor. Here's the armor. A beautiful breastplate. So yeah, hit me. It's amazing. It feels so different. It's like we're in a different movie now. We shot for three months in green screen in London. Now that we're outdoors and dealing with the natural elements, it's totally different. Utah and Arizona, this area that we're in is just awe-inspiring. There's an unforgiving beauty to it all. It was helping me, I'm sure, ...

Like most of her John Carter co-stars, Oscar-nominee Samantha Morton (In America) has been in blockbuster films, but she's never had to do motion capture up until this movie. Also, since she plays a Thark, she also never had to walk on stilts until John Carter. Morton plays Sola, a pariah of the war-loving Thark society due to her caring and nurturing attitude, and she's given the task of helping John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) acclimate to life among the Tharks.

Morton was a bit reluctant to talk about her character since she's used to talking more about the film after it's finished rather than during production. It's a position I absolutely respect, and I'm glad she was at least willing to comment on how working with director Andrew Stanton compared to working with Charlie Kaufman (Synecdoche, New York) and Steven Spielberg (Minority Report), adapting a classic piece of literature (John Carter is based off Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars), and a bit more. Hit the jump for the interview. John Carter opens in 3D on March 9th.

Question: How easy is it for your performance to get past the look of everyone on-set?

SAMANTHA MORTON: I think that with every performance I do and every part I do, there's either someone in a wig or a complicated costume. It doesn't make a difference if it's set in the 17th century or in the future, like in "Minority Report". It's really the same.

What about walking on stilts? How does that change your ...

The indie drama Return (opening in theaters on February 10th) tells the story of Kelli (Linda Cardellini), a woman back from a military tour of duty, who’s looking forward to rejoining her old life with her husband (Michael Shannon) and children. Even though she wanted nothing more than to experience the feelings of everyday life again, she slowly realizes that her world has become unfamiliar. Her friends and family just don’t understand what she’s been through, and she doesn’t know how to overcome that to move forward.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Linda Cardellini talked about what attracted her to this role, finding ways to identify with this woman even though she never chose to make the same sacrifice, talking to people with similar experiences to hear their stories and how they dealt with returning home after war, working with two amazing co-stars like Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) and John Slattery (Mad Men), and the challenges of being on screen for almost every single minute of the film. She also talked about last year’s Freaks and Geeks reunion at PaleyFest and what it was like to see not just her co-stars but their families again, how she got interested in writing and developing her own projects, and what she’s looking for now in acting roles. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

Poised for Valentine’s Day, the Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum love story The Vow opens this weekend. The pair play young newlyweds who are fiercely in love until a car accident leaves McAdams’ character with such severe memory loss that she cannot remember her husband. While her husband tries to make her fall in love with him all over again, she must decide if she wants her old life back. Based off a true story, the film is absorbing and hits deeply on a variety of emotions. With an excellent supporting cast—Scott Speedman, Sam Neill, and in particular Jessica Lange, the film is an engaging and satisfying love story, and also one that deals with the intricacies of family dynamics. Also, McAdams has a way of injecting believability into all her roles, and she was great in this.

At the film’s press junket, I sat down with the charming duo where we discussed how they got involved in the project, if they met the real life couple, and their favorite dating stories. Hit the jump to watch.

One of the many films that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director Colin Trevorrow‘s Safety Not Guaranteed. Written by Derek Connolly, the film’s about a trio of magazine employees investigate a classified ad that seeks a partner for time travel. One employee develops feelings for the paranoid but compelling loner and tries to discover what he’s really up to. It’s based on a real ad that was passed around the internet in 2005 and the movie stars Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Jake Johnson and Karan Soni. Shortly after premiering, FilmDistrict bought the film, so you can look forward to seeing it at some point in the future. For more on the film, you can read Matt’s review.

After seeing the movie, I got to sit down with Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly for an extended interview. We talked about premiering at Sundance, how they first met, casting, how they secured financing, filming multiple endings, using the brand new Sony F3 to shoot the film, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch the interview.

As usual, I’ve time indexed the interview so you can watch the parts that interest you. Finally, if you missed my video interviews with Jake Johnson, Aubrey Plaza, or Mark Duplass, click the links.

At this year's Sundance Film Festival, I was able to sit down with writer-director Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, Red Road) for an extended interview about her adaptation of Wuthering Heights that stars James Howson, Kaya Scodelario, Steve Evets, and Nichola Burley. Here's the short synopsis:
"What would you do if you were denied your soulmate? The passionate tale of Heathclith and Cathy, two teenagers whose elemental love for each other creates a storm of vengeance. From Andrea Arnold, comes a new take on the classic, a startling vision of desire and obsession."
Like her previous films, Arnold has added a realistic take to the material, and it was one of my favorite films at Sundance. During the interview, Arnold talked about being at Sundance, how she got involved in the project, her writing process, having the film vary its aesthetic depending on the characters age, what she learned from showing the movie to friends, film vs. digital, what she has coming up, and a lot more. Hit the jump to read or listen to the interview.

As usual, I'm offering two ways to get the interview: you can either click here for the audio, or the full transcript is below. Also, I'm offering the teaser trailer and full synopsis first.
In a remote farmhouse on Yorkshire’s nineteenth-century moors, Mr. Earnshaw brings home a wary biracial boy, whom he names Heathcliff. Adopted into the family under Christian values, Heathcliff’s new presence is met with mixed feelings. Hindley, Earnshaw’s teenaged son, treats him with contempt, while ...

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, the beloved children’s story that’s also its author’s favorite work, opens in theaters on March 2nd. To promote the film’s release, Collider got to participate in the press junket and sit down with producer Chris Meledandri (founder and CEO of Illumination Entertainment).

While we will run what he had to say about the film, closer to its release date, we did want to share what he had to say about the development of the live-action film Illumination is doing on the life of Theodor Geisel, the man behind the work of Dr. Seuss, that is being produced by Johnny Depp, who will possibly star in the lead role. Meledandri said that he takes the protection of the Seuss legacy very serious and will not move forward with the film until they believe it’s right, and that they are planning for it do include a mix of the animated characters of his creation. He also said they’ve just started animating Despicable Me 2, and how excited they are to have Al Pacino making his animated feature debut as the villain. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Question: Is it extra daunting to take on a live-action story about Theodor Geisel’s life, knowing that you’re representing him, as well as these characters?

CHRIS MELEDANDRI: It is incredibly daunting to take on a live-action story. I think that it adds a level of complexity to the responsibility that goes beyond what I’ve experienced on these two films (The ...

With his new film Rampart (which ranked #4 on my Top 10 of 2011 list), writer-director Oren Moverman took the corrupt-cop genre and twisted it just like he did with The Messenger's soldier-PTSD story. He's one of the more exciting filmmakers working today because of his ability to play against expectations and come out with a more powerful, realistic story as a result.

I got the chance to interview Moverman about the film and we talked about where the real Rampart scandal came into the story, re-teaming with Woody Harrelson, shooting the movie as if it were two different films, and more. Moverman also spoke about his collaboration with Ben Stiller for a David O. Selznic biopic for HBO, and we discussed his script for Steve Buscemi's upcoming film, Queer. Hit the jump to check out the interview. Rampart opens in select cities this Friday. Click here to read my full review.

Collider: You used the Rampart scandal as the backdrop of the film. I was wondering if you used that as inspiration for the movie or if you had the basic idea for the film and then incorporated the scandal into your script.

OREN MOVERMAN: It’s actually neither one. It’s number three. James Ellroy wrote the original script. His version had the scandal front and center. It was still a Dave Brown [Woody Harrelson] character and many of the things that are in the movie came from that draft, but when I took over the writing and also directing, it felt ...

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, the beloved children’s story that’s also its author’s favorite work, opens in theaters on March 2nd. To promote the film’s release, Collider got to participate in the press junket and sit down with actor Ed Helms, who lends his voice to the iconic role of the Once-ler, the old and bitter hermit whose greed got the better of him.

While we will run what he had to say about the film closer to its release date, we did want to share what he had to say about his next feature film, Jeff Who Lives at Home (due out in theaters on March 16th), which he is clearly very proud of, the current status of The Hangover 3, and how much fun he’s been having as the office manager on the NBC comedy series The Office. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

What was it like to have the experience of working on something like Jeff Who Lives at Home with Jason Segel, and both of you doing dramatic roles?

ED HELMS: I love that movie. I’m so proud of it. It’s such a weird little world that Mark and Jay Duplass created. We had so much fun making it, even though it’s not particularly funny. That was new territory for me, certainly, as a professional actor. In high school, I did “All My Sons,” but that was probably the last dramatic thing I did. But man, Jason is a phenomenal actor. Obviously, he’s funny as ...

ABC’s intensely scary paranormal thriller The River follows the story of world famous wildlife expert and TV personality Dr. Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood), host of the beloved series “The Undiscovered Country.” After Cole goes missing deep in the Amazon, his wife, Tess (Leslie Hope), and estranged son, Lincoln (Joe Anderson), decide to lead a rescue mission deep into the unexplored reaches of the Amazon River, where nature is cruel, magic is real and nothing is what it seems.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, executive producer Oren Peli (creator of Paranormal Activity) talked about how he ended up developing an idea for a TV show, the extent of Steven Spielberg’s involvement, the challenges of telling a season’s worth of story in only eight episodes, doing the episodes with a scare-of-the-week while also advancing the overall mystery, trying to create moments where you don’t know what’s going to happen because it’s the unexpected that’s scary, and that even though no one is safe, characters won’t be killed off just for the sake of killing them off. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

How did this come about and how much of a production challenge was it to do this outdoors?

OREN PELI: It actually started with an idea that I had for a movie, which was much more simple than the way The River has evolved. It was just going to be about a documentary crew that had gone missing in the rainforest, and filming the rescue mission to ...

Nobody Walks, directed by Ry Russo-Young (You Won’t Miss Me), was one of the many films that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Written by Lena Dunham and Russo-Young, the ensemble drama stars John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, Rosemarie DeWitt, India Ennenga and Justin Kirk. In the film, “Krasinski plays Peter, a Hollywood sound designer who’s agreed to help Martine (Thirlby) with her experimental art film as a favor to his wife (DeWitt). Martine, a beautiful and driven 23-year-old artist, comes to stay in the family’s pool house at their posh Silver Lake home, and her arrival ignites raw emotions and desires throughout the entire family.” Ennenga plays the daughter. Since premiering, Magnolia picked up the film for domestic distribution, so you’ll be able to see it at some point down the road.

During my interview with Rosemarie Dewitt we talked about being at Sundance, who she plays in Nobody Walks and what it’s about, how the story changed along the way, karaoke and more. In addition, since Dewitt just finished shooting Neighborhood Watch (which stars Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Richard Ayoade), she talked about who she plays and what it's about. We also talked about Your Sister’s Sister and The Odd Life of Timothy Green.
