If taking a sci-fi television series from the 20th century and reworking it for a modern audience could work for ABC’s V, then there’s hope for Space: 2099. Not only does the series have the strong original run of Space: 1999 to draw from, but HDFilms (the company behind the V resurrection) is on board for the remake. The original 1970s series created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson starred Martin Landau (Ed Wood) and Barbara Bain (Mission: Impossible) among the crew members of Moonbase Alpha. News of the reboot comes only months after Fox and Seth MacFarlane announced the revisiting of the Carl Sagan miniseries, Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey. Although the project is in early stages of development and hasn’t yet courted any networks, the creative team behind Space: 2099 seem enthusiastic. Hit the jump to see what they had to say and watch an intro from the original series.

THR reported on the revitalization of Space: 1999 as Space: 2099. Jace Hall, the president of HDFilms who will serve as an executive producer, had this to say about working on a contemporary version of the series:
"Science fiction is a powerful format capable of visualizing the human condition in thought-provoking ways. While we are indeed re-imagining the franchise and bringing something new and relevant to today’s audiences, I feel strongly that some of the overall tones set by the original Space: 1999 television show represent an exciting platform to explore possibilities.”
ITV Studios International will be pairing up with HDFilms ...

Here's the official synopsis for Game of Thrones:
Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plots, lust and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men...all will play the 'Game of Thrones.'

Considering most of the ad campaign for the first season of American Horror Story highlighted some of the more strange aspects of the series like the Rubber Man and various S&M related imagery, it wouldn't be a surprise if the marketing for the new season took a strange approach as well. We'll have to wait quite awhile to find out as the second season doesn't even start airing until the spooky month of October. However, what might keep you busy until then is trying to find some old school 3D glasses that just might help see this poster a little better. I can't be sure since I don't have a pair myself, but there does seem to be some photo trickery. See for yourself after the jump!

Even prior to any casting or extensive plot details, the NBC pilot Revolution has major geek credentials. J.J. Abrams and partner Bryan Burk---who together have brought us Star Trek, Alias, Lost, Fringe, etc.---are producing. Supernatural creator Eric Kripke wrote the script. Now Deadline reports Jon Favreau, he of Iron Man fame, will direct the pilot. Favreau has directed a few TV comedies before, including an episode of Undeclared, but nothing of this scope. Revolution is described as "a high-octane action drama following a group of characters struggling to survive and reunite with loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist." I don't know what that means, but it sounds very cool, mostly because I trust the parties involved.

Favreau is also working on Tweaked this pilot season over at CBS. He wrote the script, which chronicles life and dating among single parents in Santa Monica, and is attached to direct.

The CW is casting up for Arrow, a drama series based on the DC comic Green Arrow. Last week Stephen Amell (The Vampire Diaries) signed on to star as the playboy who moonlights as a hooded superhero, fighting crime with his enhanced arrows. Variety reports David Ramsey (Blue Bloods) will join the pilot as John Diggle, "a former military man now working as a bodyguard for hire who soon finds he is trapped in a battle of wits, loyalty and trust." Diggle is a new character not found in the comic books, though the surname could be a nod to Green Arrow: Year One writer Andy Diggle. Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern) are producing Arrow along with Andrew Kreisberg (Fringe).

Hit the jump for details on Bridesmaid co-star Wendi McLendon-Covey's role in a new HBO series.

According to Deadline, McLendon-Covey has signed on to star opposite Goldie Hawn in the comedy pilot The Viagra Diaries. Hawn plays Claire, a woman who struggles with single life after Claire's husband of 35 leaves her. McLendon-Covey will play Claire's daughter Hope, a female therapist. Sex and the City creator Darren Star adapted The Viagra Diaries from the book of the same name by Barbara Rose Brooker. McLendon-Covey's Bridesmaids director Paul Feig will direct the pilot.

Here is the book synopsis:

After much speculation, the producers of House M.D. have finally come to a smart decision. The current eighth season of the medical drama series starring Hugh Laurie will be the last. With Lisa Edelstein opting not to come back this season, the writing was on the wall for Dr. Gregory House to end his practice, and now it's official. While the show certainly should come to an end at this point, this season has been surprisingly decent, especially with new cast members like Charlyne Yi and Odette Annable. The most recent episode, a departure from the show's usual formula, was one of the best of the season, and while the writers certainly still have some fight left in them, it's time to give House and his team a respectful exit. Does that mean we'll see some old faces stop by for a clean wrap up? We'll have to wait and see. Hit the jump for a heartfelt thanks and farewell from producers David Shore, Katie Jacobs and Hugh Laurie, as well as a statement from Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

Here's the full goodbye press release:
After much deliberation, the producers of House M.D. have decided that this season of the show, the 8th, should be the last. By April this year they will have completed 177 episodes, which is about 175 more than anyone expected back in 2004.

The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close ...

It's always fun when Saturday Night Live alums return to host, so it's great to hear from NBC that Maya Rudolph, who can currently be seen on the comedy series Up All Night, will return to Studio 8H on February 18th. Rudolph will be joined by musical guest Sleigh Bells making their network television debut.

Since it seems like House M.D. might be on the way out, the time is coming for a new medical drama to step up to the plate. Perhaps Alfred Molina will be a good substitute for Hugh Laurie as Deadline reports the Spider-Man 2 star will lead David E. Kelley's TNT medical drama Chelsea General. The new series is based on Dr. Sanjay Gupta's forthcoming novel Monday Mornings, a story that follows five surgeons as they push the limits of their abilities and confront their personal and professional failings (sound familiar?) The series takes place during the hospital’s Monday Morbidity and Mortality conference, considered the most secretive meeting in all of medicine, where doctors gather for a confidential review of complications and errors in patient care. More details after the jump.

Molina, who recently teamed with Kelley for an arc on Harry's Law, will be playing Dr. Harding Hooten, the steely-eyed Chief of Surgery at Chelsea General, known for his punishing and outwardly-uncaring ways. Each week Dr. Hooten leads a meeting where doctors are either praised for their good work or belittled, sometimes even fired, for their mistakes. Unlike Dr. Otto Octavius, this doctor likely won't be driven crazy by artificial intelligence powered metal arms The cast also includes Bill Irwin (CSI), Jamie Bamber and Jennifer Finnigan. Stay tuned as more on this potential new series becomes available.

ABC’s intensely scary paranormal thriller The River follows the story of world famous wildlife expert and TV personality Dr. Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood), host of the beloved series “The Undiscovered Country.” After Cole goes missing deep in the Amazon, his wife, Tess (Leslie Hope), and estranged son, Lincoln (Joe Anderson), decide to lead a rescue mission deep into the unexplored reaches of the Amazon River, where nature is cruel, magic is real and nothing is what it seems.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, executive producer Oren Peli (creator of Paranormal Activity) talked about how he ended up developing an idea for a TV show, the extent of Steven Spielberg’s involvement, the challenges of telling a season’s worth of story in only eight episodes, doing the episodes with a scare-of-the-week while also advancing the overall mystery, trying to create moments where you don’t know what’s going to happen because it’s the unexpected that’s scary, and that even though no one is safe, characters won’t be killed off just for the sake of killing them off. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

How did this come about and how much of a production challenge was it to do this outdoors?

OREN PELI: It actually started with an idea that I had for a movie, which was much more simple than the way The River has evolved. It was just going to be about a documentary crew that had gone missing in the rainforest, and filming the rescue mission to ...

The Syfy drama series Being Human, currently in its second season, follows three roommates – vampire Aidan (Sam Witwer), werewolf Josh (Sam Huntington) and ghost Sally (Meaghan Rath) – who try to lead normal lives while fighting the temptations of their supernatural side. This season, the three friends are all on their own dark and destructive paths, with people from their pasts returning to threaten their futures. As they fight harder than ever to maintain their humanity, it is put more in jeopardy than ever before.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, executive producers/writers/showrunners Jeremy Carver (Supernatural) and Anna Fricke (Men in Trees, Everwood) talked about how Season 2 has evolved from what they established in Season 1, why they think their show has managed to succeed when so many other remakes and re-imaginings haven’t, how the individual journeys will affect the core friendship of the characters, how much they draw on already existing creature mythology versus using their own imagination, the ways in which the new characters will affect the existing ones, and just how dark things will get this season. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Collider: How is Season 2 different from Season 1?

ANNA FRICKE: I think that last season, they had the highest hopes of being able to pull off this experiment with humanity. The NBC musical drama Smash celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of Broadway theater, as told through a group of individuals, all following their dreams. Centering on the process of creating a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, written by the successful songwriting duo of Tom (Christian Borle) and Julia (Debra Messing), the series illustrates the rivalry that forms between youthful, inexperienced Midwestern beauty Karen (Katharine McPhee) and stage veteran Ivy Bell (Megan Hilty), both vying for the coveted lead role. When you add in a tenacious producer (Anjelica Huston) and brilliant director (Jack Davenport), there is sure to be a season’s worth of high drama with some great songs thrown in.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, acclaimed playwright Theresa Rebeck, who is also the show creator and an executive producer and writer, talked about the evolution of Smash, how this is a show about the universal idea of following your dreams, assembling this incredibly talent cast of actors, the process for determining which songs to include in each episode, and how this season will end with the out-of-town try-out for the musical, with Season 2 (if there is one) being about whether the show makes it to Broadway. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

On the drama series Lost Girl, airing Mondays on Syfy, actress Ksenia Solo plays Kenzi, a con artist and thief, who is extremely street-smart and resourceful. She is the only true confidante of Bo (Anna Silk), a Succubus that feeds off the sexual energy of humans, and her wide array of contacts makes her very useful. Regardless of the darkness in her past, Kenzi’s focus is now on protecting Bo from a world that will never understand her as well as she does.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Ksenia Solo talked about what attracted her to this role and series, that she’s always loved fantasy and sci-fi, the cool wardrobe and looks she has as Kenzi, getting to work little bits of herself into the role (like getting to speak Russian and play the drums), how tight the whole cast has gotten, and promises that you can always expect the unexpected with this show. She also talked about how much she enjoys personally interacting with fans, her thoughts on social media, her shock and disappointment that Locke & Key (in which she played the role of Dodge) never got picked up to series, how proud she is of her involvement with Black Swan, and how amazing the Life Unexpected fans still are (even though the show was canceled awhile ago). Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Collider: What initially attracted you to this show and this character?

The 2012 Annie Awards were held last night, and critical favorite Rango ended up deservedly taking home the Best Animated Feature award. Gore Verbinski’s quirky western also took home the award for Best Writing in a Feature Production, Best Editing, and the Members Favorite Award, but lost Best Directing to Kung Fu Panda 2’s Jennifer Yuh Nelson. Bill Nighy won Best Voice Acting for Arthur Christmas, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes took home the Character Animation in a Live Action Feature Production award.

On the television side of things, The Simpsons was awarded the top prize as well as Best Directing and Best Writing. Heading into the Academy Awards, Rango is our clear frontrunner. The Adventures of Tintin was pegged as the film’s biggest competition at the Oscar ceremony, but the Steven Spielberg film was ultimately left out of the nominations. Hit the jump to see the full list of Annie Awards Winners.

On FX’s Justified, actors Erica Tazel and Jacob Pitts play Deputy Marshal Rachel Brooks and Deputy Marshal Tim Gutterson, respectively. Populated with dirty politicians, hidden fortunes, a mysterious man named Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson) and an enterprising and lethal criminal from the Motor City (Neal McDonough), things are heating up for the law enforcement in Harlan, in Season 3 of the critically acclaimed, tightly written and expertly acted drama series.

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, co-stars Erica Tazel and Jacob Pitts sat down with Collider for this exclusive interview about the journey their characters take this season, the new threats in Harlan, what has most surprised them about their characters, and how this show has spoiled them, when it comes to other work. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Question: Where are your characters at this season?

ERICA TAZEL: We’re back in the daily grind of what we do in the office, assisting each other or not, or being sent on other duties that we, unfortunately, don’t get to see on the show. We’re just back up to regular old marshal duties.

JACOB PITTS: There’s the same sassy banter between Tim and Raylan (Timothy Olyphant). That’s really all I have to say about it.

What new threats are you facing this season, now that Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale) and most of her kin are gone?

PITTS: The main threat seems to come from Robert Quarles, who’s played by Neal McDonough. He’s a criminal, but he stands in for some ...

The modern era of media is a fractured landscape. Where once 70 million Americans could watch The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, today networks must fight for viewer attention with TiVo, cable, video games and of course, the internet. Simply making a great show is no longer enough. In order to succeed, advertisers must move beyond their actual programming and create something unique and specific in order to instill a deeper emotional connection with consumers.

Perhaps the master of this approach is J.J. Abrams. Between Lost, Cloverfield and Super 8, Abrams has a proven track record of producing Triple-A content matched with innovative and singular marketing. His newest show, Alcatraz, is taking the Brechtian Meta-Reality antics to a whole other level. We’re only three weeks in to the show’s run and already the producer have pulled off one of the best Alternate Reality Game pieces ever. Last Friday, Fox invited the first 312 fans who lined up at San Fransisco’s Dock 33 a chance to participate in a large-scale scavenger hunt on the real Alcatraz. Collider was on the scene and played the game. Hit the jump for a video summary of the action and a detailed breakdown of the ARG madness.

Here's my video recap with the written report below.

A nervous energy filled the air on Dock 33 as hundreds of fans, some of whom had been lined up for almost four hours, waited to board a ferry to the Rock. No one knew much of what to expect. Not even the ...

This past week brought us a story that is near and dear to me. While I briefly give my own thoughts regarding DC Comics' Watchmen prequel comic series after the jump, I want to use the "Top 5's" opening paragraph space to invite readers to voice/type their own opinions on the announcement in the comments section. As a fervent fan of the series, I'm always interested to hear fellow fans' take on Watchmen adaptations, prequels, and the like. So, with that said, what do you think? Does the creative talent involved interest you? Is it the best idea ever? The worst? Somewhere in between? Sound off in the comments.
In addition to DC's Before Watchmen announcement, this installment of the "Top 5" includes interviews with the cast and director of superhero/found-footage pic Chronicle, a "What If?" look at a 16-Bit Breaking Bad RPG, ten things to know about Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, and Sundance 2012 video interviews with Bradley Cooper, Paul Dano and more. A brief recap and link to each follows after the jump.
1. DC Comics Announces WATCHMEN Prequel Comics, BEFORE WATCHMEN

I love Watchmen. I love Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal 12-issue run. Flame away, but I really like *cough* love Zack Snyder's 2009 adaptation. All of this said, I can't help but feel like DC Comics' Before Watchmen series may eventually serve as proof that you really can have too much of a good thing. Now, that doesn't mean that I won't most likely be purchasing the first ...

After cycling through hosts of women on his previous show Two and a Half Men, Charlie Sheen is on to new ventures and a new network with FX’s comedy series, Anger Management. Starring opposite Sheen will be, Selma Blair (Hellboy), in the form of a therapist/love interest for Sheen’s character, Charlie. Blair is one of two female roles on the show (the other being Shawnee Smith (Saw) who will play Charlie’s ex-wife) which has an initial 10-episode order from FX. Hit the jump for more from Anger Management, as well as details on Bobby Cannavale's character in season three of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

Deadline reported that Sheen was ecstatic about working with Blair, who was one of the actresses invited to audition for the two roles and one of two finalists for the position. If Anger Management reaches a ratings target in their initial run of episodes, FX will order a 90 episode production on an accelerated schedule.

Meanwhile, Deadline also reported that the HBO period gangster piece, Boardwalk Empire, will have a new face in Atlantic City. Bobby Cannavale (Will & Grace) will play Gyp Rosetti, a charming mobster with a ruthless streak who acts as a challenge to Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi). Cannavale recently wrapped up a ten-episode arc on Nurse Jackie and production on Lovelace. Boardwalk Empire recently netted two SAG Awards for best drama ensemble and best actor (Buscemi). Cannavale will step in to fill the gap left by a series regular in this past season’s finale.

It’s no surprise when a network renews its highest rated show. For FX, that show happens to be fan-favorite Sons of Anarchy, a crime drama that follows members of the SAMCRO motorcycle club and their exploits in the quaint town of Charming, California. The series was renewed for a fifth season back in October, but fans will be happy to hear that the show has been renewed for a sixth season as well. In addition, creator and showrunner Kurt Sutter has signed a three-year overall deal with Twentieth Century Fox TV and FX Productions that will carry him through the seventh, and likely final, season. Hit the jump for more on Sons of Anarchy.

THR reported on Sutter’s new contract and the extension of the Sons of Anarchy seasons. Sutter, now the longest tenured writer at the network due to his work on The Shield, has the leeway to create for both broadcast and cable, as well as a script deal with FX. This allows Sutter to plan the series up to its finale as he sees fit, rather than at the demand of the Nielsen ratings. You can click here to read his thoughts on how he sees the story going. The strategy has worked out for the network’s writers in the past, including Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and Peter Tolan and Denis Leary (Rescue Me). That’s not to say that if the ratings are good, Sutter will quit after seven seasons regardless.
“There’s a part of me that does ...

Now this movie makes much more sense. While I was initially skeptical of a douche-infused adaptation of Neil Strauss’s pickup artist memoir The Game, it appears the project is being developed with a comedy bent. Book of Mormon star Josh Gad is in negotiations to star as the lead in the pic, a Rolling Stone journalist who struggles with picking up women. James Franco is onboard as Gad’s mentor in the art of tailchasing. Gad has gained notoriety thanks to his hilarious performance in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, and in addition to The Game it appears he might be poised to land his own TV show. Hit the jump for more, including a synopsis of The Game.

In addition to news concerning The Game, Deadline also reports that NBC has given a pilot order to the White House comedy series 1600 Penn. The show is leagues away from NBC’s The West Wing, as it centers on the out-of-control eldest son of a dysfunctional family returns home and becomes a major liability. The kicker? Gad’s family is The First Family. Gad will stars as the son in the pilot, and also the series if NBC likes what they see from the pilot. The show comes from Modern Family director Jason Winer and Jon Lovett, a former speechwriter to President Obama. Gad’s Book of Mormon co-star Andrew Rannells also landed a high-profile NBC pilot, Ryan Murphy’s half-hour comedy The New Normal.

Here’s the synopsis for The Game:

On the Showtime drama series Shameless, actor Jeremy Allen White plays Phillip “Lip” Gallagher, the second and by far the smartest Gallagher child, who has a penchant for trouble and a relationship with wild child neighbor Karen (Laura Wiggins) that is always threatening to break his heart. With an even further strained and more contentious relationship with his father than ever, Lip begins to realize that the more he fights to be his own man, the more he may end up just like his father, Frank (William H. Macy).

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Jeremy Allen White sat down with Collider for this exclusive interview about how lucky he feels to have such amazing material in Season 2, how the relationship between Frank and Lip will change this season, what he’d like to see Lip do with his life, how bizarre all of the sex scenes can be, and what working on this show with this cast has taught him about the craft of acting. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: How happy are you with some of the amazing stuff they’ve been giving you, in Season 2?

Jeremy Allen White: The writers are pretty amazing. They’ve really been writing for me, this season. I’m really lucky. I got some great stuff in the first season, but this time around, the writers are really warming up to me and have given me some amazing stuff. I feel really, really lucky.
