David Lean has been canonized as one of the great directors, an honor that he’s earned, even if his body of work is inconsistent. If his later years were less good, and some of his earlier films are weak, it doesn’t matter. He directed Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge on the River Kwai. The Criterion collection has brought together his first four films, and they were all adaptations of Noel Coward’s work (hence the title David Lean “Directs Noel Coward”). The films are In Which We Serve, This Happy Breed, Blithe Spirit and Brief Encounter. And our review of the Blu-ray set of David Lean Directs Noel Coward follows after the jump.

In Which We Serve was David Lean’s directorial debut, and a credit he shared with Coward. The film follows the ship the HMS Torrin as it goes into battle and gets sunk. It then cuts to the lives of its crew. The Captain, “D” Kinross, is played by Coward, while some of the other cast includes John Mills, Celia Johnson and Richard Attenborough. The film flashes forward and back as it shows the men as they prepared to board the ship, and as they hang on for life on to a life raft. We see their home lives, a quickie marriage, and one soldier (Attenborough) who knows he’s a coward at heart.

This was a film made in 1942 by the Brits, and its value comes from how much one can stand propaganda. What Coward (who also wrote the ...

Living in paradise is not as glamorous or care free as many outsiders may believe, and the King family is a perfect example of it. The Descendants, an Alexander Payne film adapted from the novel of the same name by Kaui Hart Hemmings, follows Hawaii-based lawyer Matt King (George Clooney) on his painful, yet often comedic quest to reunite his family after his wife suffers a tragic accident. While the film tugs on heart strings towards the end, it mostly infuses audiences with almost uncomfortable laughter and anticipation for when the story will kick into gear. Hit the jump for our review of The Descendants on Blu-ray.

When Matt hears his wife is in a coma following a boating accident, he finds himself alone for the first time in his life and having to take care of two daughters he knows little about. His career has kept him away from his family for years, and while it afforded them a life of relative luxury, it kept him from spending time with those he loves. A fish out of water is putting it mildly. His youngest daughter, Scottie (Amara Miller), has a sassy imagination and weirdness about her that Matt can’t begin to understand, and his eldest daughter Alex (Shailene Woodley) is a recovering drug user who has no qualms with speaking her mind in the foulest way possible. Though he feels ill-equipped to deal with his family, he knows he’s the only person who can, and the one person his daughters ...

Marvel’s The Avengers continues to Hulk Smash records at the box office, but we now have a release date and details regarding the film’s home media release. Joss Whedon’s excellent superhero pic will hit Blu-ray and DVD on September 25th, and as expected the combo set is loaded with special features. The 4-disc Blu-ray/DVD pack includes an audio commentary by Whedon, loads of deleted scenes (including an alternate ending), featurettes and much more. Additionally, a 10-disc Blu-ray super set is also apparently being planned. Hit the jump for details regarding the release.

First off, when Steve sat down with Whedon for the film’s press day, the director revealed that there would be 30 minutes of deleted scenes. We also know that he shot some stuff featuring Captain America reuniting with an old Peggy Carter, so that looks to be included among these deleted scenes. Moreover, Whedon also said that there was a lot of himself that got cut from the finished film, so Whedonites should be doubly excited about the supplemental material.

Okay, here’s the rundown of the Blu-ray/DVD specs courtesy of Blu-ray.com (via JoBlo):
4-Disc BD Combo Pack, 2-Disc BD Combo Pack and 2-Disc DVD Combo Pack
1. AUDIO COMMENTARY BY DIRECTOR JOSS WHEDON

Sometimes a performance overwhelms a movie. On paper, Stanley Kowaski is an important role in A Streetcar Named Desire - of that there’s no doubt - but the showcase role should be Blanche DuBois. Blanche is a fragile woman who’s come to New Orleans after leaving her home city under dubious circumstances. And nothing against Vivien Leigh’s work in the film, but it’s Marlon Brando as Stanley who owns the movie. Brando was ready to pop when the film was released in 1951 – he’d done a film before, but when partnered with director Elia Kazan his method acting changed the way films were made. Seriously. Our review of the Blu-ray of A Streetcar Named Desire follows after the jump.

Blanche (Leigh) shows up at her sister Stella’s with all her possession in tow. No one’s home, so she finds Stella (Kim Hunter) with her husband Stanley at the bowling alley. They talk and bicker like sisters. Blanche points out she had to watch the family die, while – when home – Stanley wonders what happened to the family money. Blanche is there for an undetermined amount of time, and the cramped quarters point out how much she’s a burden.

Blanche is disapproving of Stanley in total as he’s a working class guy and a second generation American. But what Stella can’t completely articulate is the raw animal desire that fuels her husband. He may be primitive, but he’s lusty and manly in all the right ways. Blanche sees herself as proper, ...

Fans of Kenneth Lonergan’s emotional marathon Margaret will have something to look forward to. The oft-delayed film won its share of raves when it finally received a limited theatrical release last year, with critics singling out Anna Paquin’s performance as a high-schooler whose innocence is shattered when she believes herself responsible for a fatal bus accident. Several called it the best film of the year. Now comes news that it will receive a limited-time Blu-ray combo pack release on July 10 via Amazon; in that combo pack, you’ll get a bonus DVD featuring a 3-hour extended cut sporting over 30 minutes of added footage. It promises to be at least 20% more devastating than you remember (if you got to see it at all).

Hit the jump for more, including a full press release and the box art. Margaret also stars Mark Ruffalo, Matt Damon, Allison Janney, Jean Reno, Kieran Culkin, and Matthew Broderick.

If you haven’t heard the horror stories, the film, which was shot in 2005, suffered through substantial legal turmoil stemming from an extended post-production period in which the director couldn’t make the agreed-upon 150-minute run time. At some point, Martin Scorsese, a big fan of Lonergan’s original cut, actually came in to help with the editing. And in the end, when the lawsuits and the nip/tucks were done, a cut just seconds under 150 minutes was achieved. Basically, it’s been a battle. And it’s fantastic that Lonergan is now getting the chance to share his original vision.

Here’s the ...

Movies like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close are difficult to review. On the one hand, part of me wants to rip Stephen Daldry’s film to shreds and call it a manipulative, corny, over-the-top, Oscar-seeking mess. But the other part of me wants to drop the cynicism and enjoy the heartfelt emotional journey for what it aspires to be: a film that attempts to cope with the aftershocks of 9/11, and mourn those we lost in the fire.

Watching Extremely Loud on Blu-ray over the weekend, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. While not exactly the masterpiece it thinks it is, Daldry’s film at least sidesteps the problems I had with the director’s previous efforts, especially the overtly saccharine The Reader and the morbid, depressing The Hours – both of which tried to do too much and therefore lacked focus. Hit the jump for my review.

The consensus for Extremely Loud lingered in the mixed-to-negative zone upon its release. As such I skipped out on the film during its very brief theatrical run despite the presence of stars Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis. The film went on to receive two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor (Max von Sydow) and, oddly enough, Best Picture of the Year (for which it received a lot of flak, particularly since most felt that other films, namely Drive and Shame, delivered a more satisfying product).

In effect, while all of Daldry’s films carry enough emotional heft and weepy sentiment ...

You won’t see many Chinese movies as irreverent, mischievous or iconoclastic as Let the Bullets Fly. The nation is better known for works of gravitas and dignity: celebrating its rich history or exploring serious aspects of the human condition. Bullets is more Hong Kong than Beijing, with Stephen Chow its obvious spiritual kin. The distinction doesn’t necessary make it a great movie, though it certainly helps it to stand out from the crowd. Hit the jump for the full review.

It starts with a bold opportunity that devolves into a bloody farce. During the war-torn 1920s, a cunning bandit (Jiang Wen, who also serves as writer and director) ambushes a train carrying the new governor of Goose Town to his post. The governor’s assistant dies in the attack and the governor passes himself off as the man in order to avoid being killed. The bandit hits upon the notion of taking the governor’s place, a cushy spot that lets him collect money through graft rather than shooting people in the face. Unfortunately, Goose Town has a criminal element of its own, led by Master Huang (Chow Yun-Fat) who has no intention of letting an interloper horn in on his action. The proverbial zany mayhem ensues.

Wen permits his sense of mischief to run amuck, though he retains just enough seriousness to prevent the proceedings from falling into complete silliness. The various combatants are all smart and capable, which doesn’t prevent their byzantine schemes from spinning wildly out of control time and again. It forms an ...

It’s nice to see a down and dirty action movie, and Contraband offers a number of things that are fun. It’s got Mark Wahlberg in the lead, and a supporting cast that includes Kate Beckinsale, J.K. Simmons, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, and Lukas Hass. It’s got a no-nonsense plot about smuggling, and at least one good shootout. But it’s also imminently forgettable. Our review of the Blu-ray of Contraband follows after the jump.

Wahlberg plays Chris Farraday, an ex-smuggler now married with children to Kate (Kate Beckinsale), and is currently installing security systems. Kate’s brother Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) is trying to live up to his brother-in-law, but when U.S. customs boards his ship, he dumps the drugs he was smuggling. Chris has to make things right, so he goes to Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi), who wants money for the drugs. Unfortunately the total is seven hundred grand, and when Chris steps in he also incurs the debt, which leads to death threats to his family.

Chris has to go back to smuggling, and his game plan is to bring in ten million in fake bills from Panama. But once he gets there, everything goes wrong, and he has to count on his old friend Sebastian Abney (Ben Foster) to help protect his family at home. But not everything is as it seems, with some parties working against him.

When things go bad, the film comes alive for a while, but there’s no great visual language to director Baltasar Kormákur’s work so it’s ...

Steven Soderbergh approached Haywire as a chance to turn Gina Carano into a movie star. As she’s been cast in the next Fast and Furious movie, it’s likely that we’ll see more from her. But Soderbergh approached doing an action movie as an art project, so he played with the structure and style of the modern action film. It’s ambitious, and not entirely successful. But he was right on the money that Carano can carry a movie. Haywire costars Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGreggor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton, and our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

The film beings with Malory Kane (Carano) going to a coffee shop where Aaron (Tatum) shows up to take her in. She’s not going to go quietly, and the film begins with a pretty brutal hand to hand fight. Kane wins and takes witness Scott (Michael Angarano) with her to have someone who knows why people are trying to kill her. She was on an assignment with Aaron where she’s supposed to rescue a hostage, but it doesn’t go as smoothly as expected. And then her ex-boyfriend/employer Kenneth (McGreggor) sends her to Ireland with Paul (Fassbender) on what’s supposed to be a simple job as Paul’s date. Of course it couldn’t be simple and Paul tries to kill her, so she’s on the lam from the police and other agents. Kenneth has been working with government officials Coblenz (Douglas) and Rodrigo (Banderas), and it’s hard to know why she’s ...

The Martin Scorsese who put out The Last Temptation of Christ is not the Martin Scorsese we know today. He had yet to make Goodfellas, and though Raging Bull netted Robert De Niro an Oscar, Scorsese spent much of the 1980’s in the wilderness, making niche films which were considered disappointments, only to secure financing through directing a for-hire hit movie (The Color of Money). Christ was most notable for the controversy it engendered, as it was protested by a number of religious groups, which kept it out of most big chain theaters. Vanya of 42nd Street is a project that transcends its set-up, and acts as a follow-up to Louis Malle’s My Dinner with Andre. It reunited Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn with a cast (that includes Julianne Moore) that performed Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya on the fly for years. Both have come out from Criterion on Blu-ray, and our reviews of both follow after the jump.

Scorsese was adapting the Nikos Kazantzakis novel, which was and is considered blasphemous. Willem Dafoe stars as Jesus, who is haunted by the voices in his head. He starts the film making crosses, only for his mother (Verna Bloom) and Judas (Harvey Keitel) to yell at him for it, with Judas assigned to kill him. Judas decides to give Jesus some time as he sees something in him. Jesus goes to meet Mary Magdalene (Barbara Hershey), who offers her bed but he passes. Eventually, he begins listening to the voice of God and ...

Tom Cruise is a movie star, but after his public embarrassments in 2005, whether audiences could accept him in any role was questioned. And at this point, he probably can’t create a character who isn’t a variation on Tom Cruise, movie star, which may be why the Mission: Impossible franchise is perfect for him. After four films, what can you say about Ethan Hunt other than he’s an effective problem-solver? Ultimately, when you have a director engaged with the material, you get a good film, otherwise it’s just wheel spinning by craftsmen. Brad Bird had a lot to prove with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and it shows, he delivered a home run. Cruise is supported by Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, and Paula Patton in his battle to stop a terrorist (Michael Nyqvist). And our review of the Best-Buy exclusive Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Ethan Hunt starts the film in jail, and Bird gives Cruise a star entrance. He’s working with Jane Carter (Patton) and Benji Dunn (Pegg) to break out of jail in a sequence scored to Dean Martin. The film tells you that it’s going to be a fun ride, though the plotting is often nonsense. Jane had been working with Trevor Hanaway (Josh Holloway, who sans long hair looks kind of like Cruise) to get nuclear codes from Russian terrorists, but Trevor is assassinated by Sabine Moreau (Lea Seydoux) and the codes are in the wild. The team heads to the Kremlin to figure out what this ...

Computer generated imagery has revolutionized movies, of which there’s no doubt, but one of the side effects it that it’s made spectacle boring. You can destroy anything, create fantastical creatures, and combine different takes into one without audiences noticing at the click of a button. The one thing you can’t create with a computer is a compelling story, which is why The Darkest Hour is such a dull slog. Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, and Max Minghella lead a pack of Americans who are stuck in Russia when an alien invasion hits. Our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Sean (Hirsch) and Ben (Minghella) are headed to Russia to sell a website idea that gets poached by Skyler (Ben Kinnaman). They’re bummed about it, but they go partying and meet Natalie (Thirlby) and Anne (Rachael Taylor). And then aliens show up and they have to hide out. Of course, along the way they meet a crazy guy who’s got a weapon that hurts the aliens, and that may help them survive.

Running a scant 89 minutes, the problem with the film is that what once might have passed as spectacle now just comes across as pixels. The sight of Moscow being destroyed, wrecked planes, and mass destruction is utterly weightless. It’s hard to ooh and aah when there’s nothing practical about it, and the film would have been more impressive if we didn’t know it was just good computer work. The tricks themselves aren’t that impressive any more.

The film – directed ...

There are many ups and downs in Alfred Hitchcock’s long and varied career. From the British filmmaker who was learning his craft to the skilled thriller filmmaker we know today, there were many periods of uncertainy and compromise in his filmography. After proving his mastery with such films as The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes in England, Hitch was invited to America to work for David O. Selznick. It led to Rebecca, Spellbound and Notorious, which Fox has now put out on Blu-ray, and through the three you can see Hitchhcock learning how to work in America while retaining and refining his voice. Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck, and Cary Grant star in the movies, and our review of the three follow after the jump.

1940’s Rebecca was Hitch’s first American production. He worked from a novel by Daphne Du Maurier (who wrote the book on which The Birds was based), and it’s fair to say Hitchcock’s auteurship here is shared with David O. Selznick. Hitch was new to the country, while Selznick was just coming off of Gone with the Wind, the most successful film in movie history. This is Hitchcock before he became “Hitchcock,” and this is a great director who was as much custodian as author.

Joan Fontaine plays the unnamed lead, who starts the film as a hired friend to an old woman, but meets Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier), and when she’s about to leave their vacation, he proposes. They are to go ...

Paramount is good about releasing classics on Blu-ray from time to time, and their latest batch offers one of the greatest films of all time, and an entertaining minor work by a master director. Chinatown is Roman Polanski’s masterpiece. It stars Jack Nicholson as a private dick assigned to find out about an affair that uncovers statewide corruption in California. Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief offers Cary Grant and Grace Kelly on the Riviera in beautiful Vista-vision. Both are definitely worth checking out on Blu-ray (if not purchased immediately) and our reviews of both follow after the jump.

In Chinatown, J.J. Gities (Nicholson) is a Los Angeles detective who mostly handles infidelity cases. He’s hired by Evelyn Mulray to check in on her husband Hollis who runs the Water department and spends most of his days checking out the reservoirs. Photos are taken of Hollis with a woman, and so Gitties gets what he thinks is wanted. Except the woman who hired him isn’t the real Evelyn Mulray (Faye Dunaway), and Hollis is found dead shortly thereafter. The real Evelyn hires him to make his story believable, but J.J. is pretty sure her husband was murdered, especially after a midget (director Roman Polanski) takes a switchblade to his nose. Hollis’s death was all about the water in Los Angeles – there’s a drought going on and Noah Cross (John Huston) seems to be going about a land grab. Evelyn is Noah’s daughter, and there’s something between he and his daughter ...

When Clint Eastwood made Unforgiven in 1992, he was in a transitional period of his career. Though he was still making pop junk like Pink Cadillac and The Rookie, he had also directed Bird - which started his career as an art-house/Oscar friendly director (though that film was mostly ignored). Eastwood was getting old, and there was sense that he had to stop playing these sorts of role. Unforgiven was his great Western standoff, and he assembled a great cast that included Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, and Richard Harris in a career-defining work. Our review of the Blu-ray of Unforgiven follows after the jump.

The film begins with an incident in a whorehouse. Two cowboys cut up a young prostitute, and when sheriff “Little” Bill Daggett (Hackman) offers the ladies less justice than they wanted, the prostitutes band together to offer a bounty. William Munny (Eastwood) is living on a farm with his children, having buried his wife. He’s been out of the game for a long time but when ‘The Schofield Kid’ (Jaimz Woolvett) shows up to tell him about the reward, Will is suckered in and brings in his old pal Ned Logan (Freeman).

Also looking for the bounty is English Bob (Harris) who comes to town with his biographer (Saul Rubinek) in tow. Little Bill doesn’t take kindly to gunslingers and decides to tell the biographer what really happened in some of the incidents he wrote about. And so begins one of the film’s great strengths – it cuts ...

“You must remember this…” Calling Casablanca a classic is something of an understatement. It’s the machinery of Hollywood in the 40’s at its pinnacle. It’s got great direction from Michael Curtiz, a witty and fast paced script, and stars. Stars like stars should be – indelible - and a cast of memorable supporting players who pop in brief appearances. Huphrey Bogart plays Rick, the owner of a bar in Casablanca whose life gets shaken up by the appearance of Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), his long lost love. But she’s now married to a leading resistance fighter, and there’s a war on. Our review of the 70th Anniversary edition of Casablanca on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

The film opens introducing the world of Casablanca. The city is a port where many are stuck waiting to get to America. Many are predators, looking to get out by any means necessary. Bogart’s Rick is a club owner, and he sees the human trafficking in front of him as the hustler’s hustle and doesn’t care if the marks get taken. He doesn’t drink, and he’s got a wry detachment. He’s friends with Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains), who works for the Vichy, and doesn’t do much policing. But there are Nazis in town, headed up by Major Heinrich Strasser (Conrad Veidt), and there on the lookout for Victor Lazlo (Paul Henreid), the renowned freedom fighter/underground leader.

The Nazis start by going after Ugarte (Peter Lorre), who has papers that can get anyone out of town. He ...

David Cronenberg is one of the greatest working directors, of that there is little question. But for those who’ve been following his work since the beginning, his career has taken a turn for the respectable. It’s easy to suggest that he’s holding back the weird for the sake of possible Oscar glory (which was denied him here) watching something like A Dangerous Method. But there’s enough perversity and intelligence in the film to mark it as a Cronenberg movie, even if it doesn’t go all out. Michael Fassbender stars as Carl Jung, who takes in Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) under the suggestion of Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). From there, things get weird. Our review of the Blu-ray of A Dangerous Method follows after the jump.

The film starts with Knightley’s Spielrein coming to Fassbender’s Jung. She’s all twitches and stuck-out jaw when they meet as she’s considered a hysteric. Jung uses Freud’s methods and gets some results – a while later and she’s achieved some normalcy, but only after confessing that she’s turned on by sadomasochism. Jung reports to Freud that he used his talking cure method, and the two become friends. Freud then encourages Jung to take on Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel), a fellow psychologist who embraces his id to the point that he’s encouraged patients to kill themselves, and has slept with many. Otto feels that most people are too inhibited, and should pursue their desires come what may.

Their conversations turns Jung on to the idea of sleeping with ...
