Spike Lee’s Malcolm X is twenty years old, but the controversy surrounding it still feels fresh. At the time, Lee was considered a dangerous filmmaker, and no one was sure how the film would be received and if it would start riots. And Lee made it of the moment; he opened with the Rodney King beating, which now may have no context to younger viewers. But now, it’s simply a great movie that is saddled with a bio-pic structure. Denzel Washington gives a career best performance as the criminal transformed into a great leader and thinker. Our review of Malcolm X on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

The film starts as Malcolm Little (Washington) enters into a life of crime. He’s dressed to the hilt, working on a train, and looking for better action. His partner in crime is Shorty (Lee), and eventually he starts dating a white woman (Kate Vernon) and running with West Indian Archie (Delroy Lindo), a bookmaker that Malcolm eventually alienates. Everything crashes down when his gang is arrested, and he ends up in prison.

There Malcolm meets Baines (Albert Hall), who begins to teach him about the Muslim religion, and how black people have been oppressed by the white man. Malcolm slowly takes the bait, and begins to learn. As a child he was told – because he was black – that service work was the only thing for him, but he’s inspired and ...

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when my 4-year old daughter and I “popped” in Mr. Popper’s Penguins. As I’ve mentioned before, I have kids now so I see a pretty full spectrum of movies for children. Popper's stars Jim Carrey, which could be a make-it-or-break-it for many decision makers. I myself am a fan of Carrey, especially of older work like Fire Marshall Bill (In Living Color), Ace Ventura, and Me, Myself and Irene.

It is pretty well known that Carrey has tried his hand at several other types of roles like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show, The Number 23, etc. Some people have different perspectives on how successful he has been at these but I mention it because I would say that Popper’s is a return to form for him. My review of the Blu-ray after the jump:

Carrey acts silly enough to entertain children (and at least this adult) while still pulling off a realistic dad role. Fear not, Ace Ventura-haters! Carrey will not be on the screen talking to your child through his bum.

The movie is based on the fact that Mr. Popper has basically inherited penguins and the hijinks that ensue. The penguins are obviously CGI but not to the point that it takes away from the movie. For example, my daughter never mentioned that she thought they were fake. She did, however, think that they were cute and hilarious.

Underneath the penguin-centricity of this film lies a mostly heartwarming story of ...

There are a number of things to recommend about Shark Night, which is unfortunate. Had there been a little more care in the first act, had there been nudity and had the majority of the shark effects been practical, they might have had an engagingly stupid B movie on their hands. Alas, the film comes close, but there is no cigar. Sara Paxton, Donal Logue, Joel David Moore and a bunch of random teenagers star in Shark Night, and our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Paxton plays Sarah, the owner of a nice house in the middle of nowhere (with no cell reception) where she and a number of her college friends want to spend a nice weekend. The lead guy is Nick (Dustin Milligan) who’s the virginal goodie-two-shoes with a crush on Sarah. Along with him goes his roommate Gordon (Moore), nude model Blake (Chris Zylka) and sports star Malik (Sinqua Walls). There’s also some women along, and so there’s the slutty Beth (Katherine McPhee) and Malik’s girfriend Maya (Alyssa Diaz). They run across the sherriff (Logue) who’s a party man, and Sara’s ex Dennis (Chris Carmack) and his flunky Red (Joshua Leonard). That’s your cast of shark bait, and the film puts them into shark territory after about thirty minutes of set up.

And that set up has to take a while, because once you start with the shark attacks, they have to keep coming, so it takes a while for the film to begin proper. But ...

Adult Swim created a new language for cartoons. From the style of animation (which combined old school cell animation with new digital technology) to the nonsense plots that would often run for fifteen minutes or less, it’s a formula that has become something of a standard – until then, animated shows often went The Simpsons route. Archer, the FX adult cartoon show, is a mixture of both, but with a lot of that Adult Swim style. It’s no surprise that creator Adam Reed also worked on Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Sealab 2021.

The show stars H. Jon Benjamin as Archer, the would-be Bond spy for ISIS, a spy organization run by his mother (Jessica Walter). There he works with fellow spy Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler), desk girls Cheryl Tunt (Judy Greer) and Pam Poovey (Amber Nash), and with Lana’s former lover Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell). The show mixes spywork with the clash of office mates, most of whom are functionally insane. Our review of the second season of Archer on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

As was established in the first season, there’s a dynamic that’s already there and it’s maintained in this season. Archer (Benjamin) is kind of a dick, but someone who was raised poorly by his mother (Walter), so you have sympathy for him, but only so much. His mother is vain, and Walter plays her as a subtle variant on her Arrested Development character, Lucile Bluth. The sole voice of reason is usually Lana, who ...

Let me start by saying that I have not seen the entirety of the Ice Age movies. I have seen small parts at a time but this was my first full experience with these characters. I watched it with my 4-year old daughter as well, so I can offer some of her perspective (if it seems more mature than mine, I am sure it is simply an error in reading skills).

It had been a long time since I had seen a “new” animated Christmas special. My daughter and I regularly watched animated holiday videos this season like Charlie Brown, Rudolph, and Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas (which I believe still holds up). Hit the jump for my review of Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas on DVD.

The animation was exceptionally done and the casting of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary and Queen Latifah was excellent for the characters they portrayed. It was especially fun to see my daughter enjoy actors’/comedians’ performances from people that I have enjoyed for years in much different types of work.

As a father of a 4-year old and 1-year old, I have had the pleasure(?) of seeing many animated features in the past couple of years. These have run the gamut from I-wish-I could-kill-myself-but-the-kids-in-the-theater-might-be-horribly-affected-by-it to truly enjoyable movies that have manage to include jokes for the parents that you don’t feel bad about hearing around your children. This movie is definitely the latter. Both my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed it and have watched it several times ...

How do you deal cinematically with cancer? That’s the question of Jonathan Levine’s 50/50, which was based on the experiences of its writer Will Reiser. It’s a tough subject matter because cancer touches so many lives and rarely offers happy endings. But 50/50 manages to be charming, and more about friendship and family in crisis than just pain. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars with Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anna Kendrick in this warm dramedy. Our review of 50/50 on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Gordon-Levitt plays Adam, who works for public radio and is in a serious relationship with artist Rachael (Howard) when he’s diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. He’s told he’s got a 50% chance of survival, and it changes his entire life. Those around him – like his mother (Anjelica Huston) - freak out in the expected ways, while his girlfriend seems unable to get her head around it. His best friend Kyle (Rogen) seems airy and silly, but is mostly supportive. To deal with the trauma, Adam goes to see a shrink, and it’s Katherine (Kendrick), who has just graduated and hasn’t had much experience with real people yet.

As Chemo and treatments go on, Rachael pulls away completely and cheats on Adam, which frees him and Kyle to see if you can use cancer as a way to pick up girls. It turns out you can, and they both enjoy medicinal marijuana, but cancer claims the life of one of Adam’s chemo partners, and death seems ...

While we have a lot of great writers on Collider, I've decided to locate a Twilight super fan to review our copy of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 on Blu-ray. I'm not looking for someone who thinks it's the greatest movie ever made, and I'm not looking for someone who hates it either. I'm trying to find someone who loves the books and the films and can do an objective review while also writing about all the special features, commentaries, and the extra things on the Blu-ray. If you think you've got what it takes, hit the jump:

Here's the deal. I'm not going to mail you our only review copy just because you tell me you'd be good for the job.

Instead, if you'd like to review it, please email me at thecollidermailbox@gmail.com with the headline TWILIGHT BREAKING DAWN SUPER FAN. I'd also like you to provide links to your writing online, or examples of your writing in the body of the email. And I don't mean a few sentences. I'm looking for enough examples that prove you are the right person for the job. Keep in mind, I'll probably get a number of people asking for this, so you've got to sell me on why you're the right person.

Also, since the movie gets released soon on DVD/Blu-ray, I'd like whoever wants to do this to live in the USA so you can get the Blu-ray in time ...

Abduction was supposed to be Taylor Lautner’s coming out party as a leading man. Post-New Moon (where his part was more than a brief walk-on), he got a lot of heat as the third member of Twilight’s love triangle, and studios and projects were being thrown at him. Sure, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart couldn’t bring the twi-hards in to their work outside of Forks, but perhaps Lautner was different. And in Abduction he proves how he really is different from those two: he can’t act. Abduction misfired at the box office, and has hurt Lautner’s post-Twilight chances, which is probably for the best. Jason Isaacs, Mario Bello, Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver, Alfred Molina and Michael Nyqvist co-star in this John Singleton film, and our review of Abduction follows after the jump.

Lautner plays Nathan, who starts the film going to a party and getting drunk with his friends after driving up doing the ship’s mast routine from Death Proof. Lautner and his friends seem to think partying and drinking involves hooting a lot – perhaps the film was meant to be targeted at his pre-teen fanbase so they didn’t want to show anything that resembled debauchery. But it sets up immediately that there are problems with the movie. Collins plays Karen, his next door neighbor who he’s been crushing on for years. She’s having tension with her new boyfriend, but they break up conveniently. When Nathan gets home from the party his father (Isaacs) wants to box him, which is ...

We’ve seen many of the great horror films of the 70’s and 80’s remade and yet few if any have lived up to their predecessors. So remaking John Carpenter’s The Thing must have been a tempting but dangerous proposition. The film is considered one of the greatest horror films of that or any time, and a remake might aggravate fans (even though the 1982 film itself was a remake), on top of the knowledge that the Carpenter film was a flop when released. To circumvent that they made a prequel, which copies the original in a lot of ways, and takes place days before the original remake. 2011’s The Thing stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, and Eric Christian Olsen as the victims, and our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Winstead is Kate Lloyd, a scientist called in by Norwegians to check out their find: a spaceship and an alien corpse. She’s brought in by Dr. Sander Halvorson (Ulrich Thomsen) and her old buddy Adam Finch (Olsen), and they’re flown in by helicopter, where they meet Sam Carter (Edgerton) and his buddy Jameson (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). The Norwegians are an exciteable and hard to distinguish bunch. They’re all excited by the discovery, but – of course – there’s something alive in their find, and it starts killing off some members of the team. But then also, Kate finds fillings in a sink, and it’s shown that the alien can reproduce human beings perfectly – except their flaws.

George Clooney’s The Ides of March is exactly what you’d expect from Clooney (as a filmmaker) at this point. It’s smart, smooth, well cast and put together. If there’s a modest hesitation, it’s that it’s a very small movie, and perhaps one that has delusions of profundity. Ryan Gosling stars as a campaign manager for one of the leading presidential contenders (Clooney). But to get the nomination, Gosling finds that he’s embroiled in double crossing by friends and foes alike. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood and Jeffery Wright co-star in the film, and our review of The Ides of March on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Gosling plays Stephen Meyers, a George Stephanopoulos-type campaign manager who’s one of the youngest people in his position. He works under Paul Zara (Hoffman), and they’re in a tough battle to win Ohio. They need the win to close the election, and the only other alternative is to give Senator Thompson (Wright) what he wants, which is Secretary of State. But Clooney’s Governor Mike Morris doesn’t want to compromise his cabin that much. Two things change Meyers’s playing field: he has a meeting with the opposition’s campaign manager, Tom Duffy (Giamatti), and begins a sexual relationship with Molly Stearns (Wood). Meyer thinks the meeting with Duffy is nothing, and only tells Zara after the fact, which then blows up in his face. And as his relationship with Molly continues, he learns a devastating secret about the man he’s working for.

Gosling rightly plays ...

Will there come a time when people look back on the career of Robin Williams and wonder “was everyone who liked him on drugs?” Williams was championed as a great comic actor by the likes of Pauline Kael, but perhaps years of his schtick has turned it into a cliché. Or perhaps it’s living through the period where he eventually wore out his welcome as a comic performer, with films like Father’s Day, Hook and Jack ruining a lot of his goodwill. Fortunately he transitioned into a more serious actor, and films like Good Morning Vietnam and Dead Poets Society helped with that transition. Our reviews of both on Blu-ray follow after the jump.

1987’s Good Morning Vietnam came as Vietnam had become fodder for the Oscars. And following Platoon and Full Metal Jacket, it was the sort of project that was tailor-made for Williams. He plays Adrian Cronauer, a disc jockey that becomes a cause-celeb with the troops for his “witty” on-air blather. He jokes about the higher-up’s and annoys Sgt. Major Dickerson (J.T. Walsh) and Lt. Steven Hauk (Bruno Kirby) with his caustic wit. But most of the people at the station love him - like fellow disc jockey Marty Lee Dreiwitz (Robert Wuhl) and assistant/would-be DJ Edward Garlick (Forest Whitaker). He also meets a woman that he sees going into a school, so he decides to teach her class English. But her brother may be a viet cong.

Directed by Barry Levinson, the film is well put-together and highlights ...

There’s nothing inherently wrong with a formula picture, the problem is with filmmakers not investing in the formula. There’s just too many big budget movies these days – like the Pirates or Transformers films – where the characters and what they do don’t make sense, and it’s near impossible to care about anything that happens to them. So it’s strange that director Shawn Levy managed to make a formula picture right. Best known for the sub-par Night at the Museum films, Levy came across as a hack. But Real Steel knows exactly what it’s doing and works you over. Hugh Jackman stars as a washed up boxer trying to make his living fighting with robots. Enter his abandoned son (Dakota Goyo) and a special robot that might be able to take them to the top. Our review of Real Steel on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

The opening of the film has to set up a lot of stuff that’s a bit hackneyed, but it also set the terms of the movie. It’s going to give you all the pieces so when it all comes together, it’s part of the process. Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, who used to be an okay boxer, but now makes a living with his robot fighters. Yeah, it’s kind of a riff on rock’em sock’em robots. The film starts by showing what a cad and unfocused person Charlie is as he tries to hustle children and loses a fight because he’s too distracted by a pretty ...

These days romantic comedies have to be “not your normal romantic comedy” to be interesting at all. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Judd Apatow’s efforts, etc. may follow the same inherent structure of a Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson film, but it’s the difference between a gourmet burger and McDonalds. And with those Heigl and Hudson efforts, the end result is usually the same, an hour and forty five minutes or so of high concept ridiculousness. Anna Faris has been smart about her work, but What’s Your Number? is a by-the-numbers rom-com. It’s also not very good, but it’s hard to get worked up over such blandness. Chris Evans and a host of supporting comics co-star in this tepid affair. Our review of What’s Your Number? on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Farris Stars as Ally Darling, who starts the film breaking up with her boyfriend (Zachary Quinto) and getting fired by her skeevy boss (Joel McHale). As she takes the train home, she reads an article about how women who have slept with over 20 men find it harder to get married. Her sister (Ari Graynor) is about to tie the knot, and when out with their friends Ally reveals that she’s slept with more men than anyone else in her circle. She’s at 19, and that night she makes a bad decision that takes it to 20.

Fearing that she’s doomed to never get married, she decides to track down as many of her ex-lovers as she can find. ...

When a studio dumps a horror movie, or any movie, it usually comes after some tinkering. Sometimes things don’t come out the way they were expected, and they try to fix what they can, or make it a harder or softer cut to make it more marketable. With 2011’s Dream House, one expects a terrible movie that was butchered or messed with in such a way that the release version seems a shred of the former movie. The weirdest thing about the film is that it feels like they made the movie they set out to make. Sure, it didn’t turn out well, but at least it’s a complete thought. Jim Sheridan directs Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz in the story of a haunted family that seems like a decade-late riff on The Sixth Sense. Our review of the Dream House Blu-ray follows after jump.

Craig stars as Will Atenton who starts the film leaving his job permanently to write from home. He’s got a loving wife in Libby (Weisz) and two adorable moppet daughters. They’re just setting up the home, so there’s painting going on, but it seems that the neighbors look at him funny, and there’s something odd going on. Neighborhood teenagers have been breaking into his basement to hold séances and hang out, and it appears there were murders in the house. His kids see things in their backyard. Spooky.

His next door neighbor Ann (Watts) is nice but tenuous with him, and it may be because ...

Jason Statham is like the only fast food restaurant in a small town. There’s really no other actor who can be counted on to deliver action films on a regular basis, and Statham fills that need at least once or twice yearly. Sometimes you just want a burger, and sometimes you just want to see Statham kick the crap out of someone. Killer Elite brought together Statham, Robert De Niro, and Clive Owen for playtime, and though the two others are relatively serious actors, here they’re playing on Statham’s turf. The results are a little sluggish, but deliver what’s expected. Our review of Killer Elite on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Statham stars as Danny, who – after a mission gone bad – drops out of the game of assassin work. A year later he’s dragged back in by his old partner Hunter (De Niro), who’s been taken hostage in Oman with the hopes of using Danny to finish the job. The assignment is to kill three former SAS agents, and the deaths must not only make it look like an accident, he also has to videotape it. Trying to get leads, one of Danny’s men gets the attention of Spike Logan (Owen), a former SAS agaent who works with the Feathermen to protect those in the family after they get out of the organization. Eventually Spike and Danny will collide.

If the Killer Elite has a problem, it’s that it’s just too bloated for the story they’re telling. There’s probably a ...

While that November release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 may seem like an eternity to die-hard fans, Summit has a treat in store for those heading out to pick up Breaking Dawn - Part 1 on DVD. In nearly 500 stores across the country, EW reports that Target will be hosting the world premiere of an exclusive scene from Breaking Dawn - Part 2 during the midnight DVD/Blu-ray release of Part 1. The clip will screen at 11pm at select stores as fans are waiting in line to pick up their copy of the first half of the finale.

This is a pretty ingenious decision on Target’s part, as the store ensures that most Twihards (and by golly there’s a lot of them) will choose Target as their Part 1 DVD source. In addition to the regular edition of the DVD/Blu-ray, Target will also be selling a Limited Collector’s Edition DVD that includes—deep breath—an authentic prop flower from Bella and Edward’s wedding scene. To find out if your local Target will be participating in the Part 2 clip premiere, click here. For the rest of you, The Twilight Saga comes to an end on November 16th.

Every once in a while it’s nice to have a pleasant surprise, and 2010’s Point Blank - the French film with the title of a great American movie – is one of those surprises – it’s a really good action film. Perhaps it owes something to the Luc Besson school of French filmmaking with an eye toward Hollywood, or perhaps it’s in response to Besson’s repeated production of low budget action films. Regardless, writer/director Fred Cavayé delivers the goods. Gilles Lellouche, Roschdy Zem, Gérard Lanvin and Elena Anaya star in this pot-boiler about an innocent male nurse (Lellouche) who gets caught between a criminal (Zem) and corrupt police. Our review of Point Blank on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

The film starts with Zem’s Hugo Sartet running from a botched job. He’s being chased by two men, and runs into traffic and is hit by a motorcycle. Hugo ends up in the hospital where Samuel Pierret (Lelouche) is completing his training, and should be a nurse in a couple days. When he sees a man try to kill Hugo, he stops the assailant, but when he goes home to tell his very pregnant wife (Anaya) about it, he’s assaulted by Luc (Adel Bencherif), who informs him that if he wants to get his wife out of harm’s way, he better get Hugo out of the hospital as soon as possible.

Samuel goes back for Hugo, and then the chase is on as he has to get Hugo out while being surrounded by ...
