In a summer filled with superhero spectacles and sci-fi extravaganzas, it’s nice to get back to the roots of Depression-era, moonshine-runnin’ crime dramas.  Director John Hillcoat (The Road) has the cure for what ails you in Lawless, an adaptation of the Matt Bondurant novel, “The Wettest County in the World.”  Lawless stars Shia LaBeouf (Transformers) and Tom Hardy (Inception) as the Bondurant brothers, Southern bootleggers during the Prohibition era.  A new clip from the film shows a nice moment between the two characters and highlights the range of both.  Another clip introduces the strangely androgynous character, Special Agent Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) who has swooped in from Chicago to shut the Bondurants down.  There’s some good stuff on display here, hints of which were seen in this trailer.  You should also check out these awesome character postersLawless, also starring Jessica Chastain, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Mia Wasikowska and Dane DeHaan will debut in theaters on August 29th.  Hit the jump to see the clips.

First Clip from Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix

The first clip Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master has gone online.  The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a veteran who’s haunted by his experiences during World War II, and decides to form his own religion as a result.  Joaquin Phoenix plays a drifter who becomes the right-hand man to Hoffman’s character.  As you’ll see from the clip, the movie apparently has a very heavy There Will Be Blood vibe both in terms of how its cut and from Jonny Greenwood‘s score.  The Master is also Joaquin Phoenix’s first movie since “retiring” from acting, and he looks absolutely amazing.  His performance in this clip is both creepy and dangerous, and I can’t wait to see him return to form in what could be one of his best roles to date.

Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The film, which also stars Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, and David Warshovsky, is having a sneak peek for press later today at the Cannes Film Festival.  The Master will probably make the fall festival rounds before hitting theaters on October 12th.

It’s a Pixar extravaganza!  We’ve got some exciting news to share regarding everyone’s favorite animation studio.  First up, a new clip from the excellent-looking Brave has gone online.  It skews towards the comedic side of the film, and I’m gonna take a wild guess and say that the triplets may or may not steal the show when the film hits theaters.  Additionally—and excitingly—Pixar will be re-releasing a few of their classics exclusively in AMC theaters this Memorial Day weekend.  Wall-E, Up, Ratatouille, and Toy Story 3 will return for a limited engagement from May 25 – 28th.  Moreover, tickets will run at the family friendly and affordable price of $6.

Each screening will be accompanied by a behind-the-scenes look at Brave, and Toy Story 3 and Up will be running in 3D (the 3D in the latter is gorgeous).  This is excellent news, and I’ll most definitely be taking advantage of the chance to see Andrew Stanton’s masterwork Wall-E on the big screen once more.  Hit the jump to watch the new Brave clip and to watch the trailers for the aforementioned Pixar films set for re-release.

New Clip from Lee Daniels’ THE PAPERBOY Featuring Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman and David Oyelowo

This new clip from director Lee Daniels’ (Precious) upcoming movie, The Paperboy, highlights not only stars Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman, but Daniels’ editing style and a mighty fine musical choice.  It features the same washed-out tones as the previous clip we posted and I have to say, I’m a fan of the look.  However, the clip, titled “Jack’s Daydream,” is loaded with overlays, cuts and transitions that come across as a bit heavy handed.  Luckily, the scene is saved by David Oyelowo snapping Jack and the audience back into reality.  You’ll have to look twice to spot Matthew McConaughey who, in a bit of a departure, doesn’t steal the scene and barely registers on the radar.

The Paperboy, an adaptation of the Pete Dexter novel, features McConaughey and Efron playing a pair of brothers who team-up to investigate the potential wrongful conviction of a death-row inmate (John Cusack).  Hit the jump to check out the clip.

Watch Mary J. Blige Perform “Any Way You Want It” from ROCK OF AGES; Hear a Snippet of Tom Cruise’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me”

You’d be forgiven for forgetting that there’s a Tom Cruise rock musical coming this summer in between all the superhero fare.  While we’ve only gotten brief glimpses of the musical numbers from Rock of Ages in the film’s trailers, a full music video for the stars’ rendition of Journey’s “Any Way You Want It” has gone online.  I actually think the idea for Rock of Ages is solid, but I absolutely cannot stand the production on these songs.  Director Adam Shankman recruited Glee’s music producer Adam Anders to produce the songs for Rock of Ages, and all the choruses sound way, way, way overproduced.  “Any Way You Want It” doesn’t sound terrible thanks to Mary J. Blige, but any time the chorus comes in I’m immediately taken out of the number.

In addition to the music video, an audio sample of Cruise singing “Pour Some Sugar On Me” has also landed online.  Again, it’s overproduced, but Cruise doesn’t sound terrible on his own.  Hit the jump to take a listen to the songs.  Rock of Ages opens on June 15th.

The marketing train for director Ridley Scott’s Prometheus continues to roll on, and the first clip from the film has now surfaced online.  By now I don’t really think any more convincing to see the pic is necessary, but for those of you interested in seeing more from Scott’s return to sci-fi, this clip should serve as a nice appetizer.  Said clip features the ship Prometheus landing on the planet we’ve seen so much of already, with Logan Marshall-Green delivering a particularly eerie line.  If you missed the interview with screenwriter Damon Lindelof in which he talked about how he turned an Alien prequel into Prometheus, trying not to reveal too much in trailers, the viral campaign and much more I highly suggest you check it out.

Hit the jump to watch the clip.  The officially R-rated Prometheus also stars Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Rafe Spall, Sean Harris, and Guy Pearce.  The film opens in 3D on June 8th.

We’ve been provided with seven clips from director Rupert SandersSnow White and the Huntsman to share with our readers.  The film takes an epic and dark approach to the classic Snow White tale, with Kristen Stewart starring as the titular heroine who trains alongside the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) in order to defeat the evil queen (Charlize Theron) who is bent on destroying the young beauty.  I’m a big fan of what we’ve seen thus far, and I’m eager to see Sanders’ fantastical and gritty visuals on full display once the film hits theaters.

Dimension Films is doubling your pleasure with a second helping of boobs, blood and killer fish in this summer’s Piranha 3DD. For a while now, I thought the extra D was a cleverly disguised breast joke, but apparently it stands for “David,” as in David Hasselhoff. This new clip from the film features The Hoff in his oh-so-familiar role as a lifeguard.  Fans of the glory days of Baywatch will get a kick out of the segment and the humor aimed at an aging Hasselhoff is spot-on to what you can expect from Piranha 3DD. Be sure to check out the trailer, red-band trailer, posters and images, as well.  The film stars Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, Meagan Tandy, Katrina Bowden, David Koechner, Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, Paul Scheer, and Gary BuseyPiranha 3DD opens June 1st.  Hit the jump to check out the new clip.

A new clip from director Rupert SandersSnow White and the Huntsman has gone online.  We already knew from the trailers that this film has a very different tone than that other Snow White film that opened this year, Mirror Mirror, and this clip only reinforces the “dark and gritty” aspect of the film.  Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman is being told asked by Charlize Theron’s Queen to hunt down that pesky Snow White, but this scene could seamlessly be dropped into an episode of Game of Thrones without seeming out of place.  Sanders has crafted a gritty fantasy take on the classic tale, but there’s also an air of the mystic or magical the permeates throughout.  I’m a big fan of what we’ve seen so far, and I’m eager to see an action/adventure film that has an intriguing and different visual style that stands out amongst the other summer fare.

The prestigious Cannes Film Festival kicks off next week, and we’re starting to see some promotional materials from a few of the films that will premiere at the fest.  We’ve already seen a stellar trailer for the prohibition-set crime drama Lawless and a fantastic clip from director Andrew Dominik’s (The Assassination of Jesse James) Killing Them Softly.  Now a few clips have surfaced for two Cannes films (both set in the South) that feature Matthew McConaughey.  The first is director Lee Daniels’ (Precious) adaptation of The Paperboy, which features McConaughey and Zac Efron playing a pair of brothers who team-up to investigate the potential wrongful conviction of a death-row inmate (John Cusack).

We also have two clips from director Jeff Nichols’ (Take Shelter) deep South drama Mud, which finds McConaughey playing a fugitive hiding out on an island in Mississippi who, with the help of two young boys, tries to escape and reunite with his lost love (Reese Witherspoon).  Hit the jump to check out the clips.

First Clip from KILLING THEM SOFTLY Starring Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, and Sam Shepard

The first clip from Andrew Dominik‘s Killing Them Softly has gone online.  The film (formerly titled Cogan’s Trade) stars Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer who’s tasked with investigating the robbery of a high-stakes poker game.  The terrific cast also includes Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Richard Jenkins, Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Bella Heathcote, and Sam Shepard.  The clip shows Shepard’s character roughing up Liotta, and it gives an indication of the tone Dominik’s trying to strike.  There’s some clever camerawork culminating in a bit of dark comedy, and I’m curious to see if the rest of the film has the same attitude.

Hit the jump to check out the clip, and click here to check out some images from the movie.  Killing Them Softly will premiere at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, and hit theaters stateside on September 21st.

Samuel L. Jackson is currently flaunting his bad ass skills as Nick Fury in the enormously successful The Avengers, but the actor will soon be playing another kind of hero in the dramatic thriller The Samaritan.  We’re happy to debut an exclusive clip from the film that features Jackson saving a young woman from an abuser in true heroic badass fashion.  In the film, Jackson plays a paroled con man who wants to build a new life, but gets sucked back into the con game by his ex-partner’s scheming son.  The clip certainly makes Jackson’s character intriguing, and hopefully the crux of the film is simply “Samuel L. Jackson being awesome.”

Hit the jump to watch the clip.  The film also stars Ruth Negga, Luke Kirby, and Tom Wilkinson. The Samaritan is currently available on VOD and Digital outlets (iTunes, SundanceNOW, Amazon Streaming, XBOX Zune) and opens in theaters on May 16th.

Warner Bros. has set up two Facebook sites to promote Jay Roach‘s upcoming comedy The CampaignWill Ferrell plays politician Cam Brady, who is squaring off his political rival, Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis).  Each candidate now has a Facebook site along with campaign ads that provide the first clips from the movie.  Sadly, these glimpses are pretty disappointing.  In a year where we’ve seen staggering stupidity from Republican presidential candidates, The Campaign seems to traffic more in malapropisms and predictable political sparring.  Hopefully, future glimpses of the film will feature better jokes.
