Sony Pictures has released a batch of new Chappie images from director Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming sci-fi film. The movie takes place in the near future and revolves around the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself, considering what this artificial intelligence means for his creators, acquaintances, and the government. Blomkamp announced himself as one to watch with his fantastic feature debut District 9, but his follow-up feature Elysium proved to be a disappointment. It’s not a bad movie, but it fails to fully deliver on the promise of its premise and doesn’t have the heart that made District 9 so affecting.
I want to be excited about Chappie, but all I can muster right now is curiosity. The whole “dirty mech in the near future” thing feels same-y after District 9 and Elysium, and I really want to see Blomkamp do something entirely different from what he’s done before. Maybe that’s Chappie, but so far it all feels a bit familiar. Here’s hoping for a pleasant surprise.

Here’s the official synopsis for Chappie:
Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.
