Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment have released a new trailer for The Divergent Series: Allegiant. Directed by Robert Schwentke (Red) and based on the third and final novel of the hit Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth, Allegiant follows Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) as they venture beyond the walls surrounding their dystopian post-apocalyptic Chicago for the first time. There, they discover shocking truths and revaltions that put the fate of humanity on the line. Detouring the from the source material a bit by following a recent trend in YA filmmaking, Allegiant will be followed up by a fourth installment titled The Divergent Series: Ascendant, which will conclude the sci-fi series in 2017.
Watch the new Allegiant trailer below. The film also stars Ansel Elgort, Jeff Daniels, Octavia Spencer, Miles Teller, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Daniel Dae Kim and Naomi Watts. The Divergent Series: Allegiant opens March 18, 2016.

While I’d love to see The Divergent Series course correct with Allegiant — the books were fine fun — there’s not a lot here to inspire optimism. There’s something about the Divergent movies that are so blatantly trope-y, and trying to crib a sense of wonder off Jonsi only amplifies that reductive quality. The teals and oranges, the generic wasteland, the high-contrast light-lined wall installations and vaugely technical floating towers, and so much almost-kissing. It all seems a bit of a boilerplate effort.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Divergent Series: Allegiant:
