Back in 2014, the Universal Pictures, Platinum Dunes, and Blumhouse Productions horror film Ouija surprised critics when it held the number one rank at the box office for two straight Saturdays and scared up over $100 million on a budget that was a fraction of that. Now, the production companies are hoping to capitalize on an unending interest in scary stories coupled with a Halloween release date to see a repeat performance for their follow-up film, Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Writer-director Mike Flanagan steps in this time for a movie that actually travels back to 1965 to explore the source of scares mentioned in its title. As the first trailer for the film reveals, there’s a clever twist on the script that could add some freshness to the franchise. Unfortunately, the trailer also promises that Ouija 2 will use familiar tropes as a crutch, so we’ll likely get a mix between a satisfying horror film and something we’ve seen many, many times before.

Starring Elizabeth Reaser, Henry Thomas, and Doug Jones, look for Ouija: Origin of Evil starting October 21st. Watch the first trailer for Ouija: Origin of Evil below, followed by the film’s synopsis, images, and poster:

It was never just a game.  Inviting audiences again into the lore of the spirit board, Ouija: Origin of Evil tells a terrifying new tale as the follow-up to 2014’s sleeper hit that opened at number one.  In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home.  When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

Ouija: Origin of Evil is produced by Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (The Texas Chainsaw MassacreThe Purge series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (The Purge and Insidious series), alongside Hasbro’s Brian Goldner (Transformers and G.I. Joe series) and Stephen Davis (Ouija).  Mike Flanagan directs from a screenplay he wrote with his Oculus and Before I Wake collaborator, Jeff Howard, and Universal will distribute the film worldwide.
