Steve Carell Interview DESPICABLE ME slice

Despicable Me, the inaugural 3-D CGI feature from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, tells the story of one of the world’s greatest super-villains. Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), surrounded by an army of mischievous little minions, is planning the biggest heist in the history of the world – he is going to steal the moon. Just when he thinks he will prove his villainy to the world and vanquish all who stand in his way, he encounters three little orphaned girls who change his life forever.

At a press conference for the film, actor Steve Carell talked about creating the right voice for Gru, playing a loveable villain and the joy of making a movie that appeals to everyone. He also explained why he thinks Season 7 will be his last season on The Office.

RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE Set Visit – Collider Goes to Toronto to Watch Milla Jovovich Kick Umbrella’s Ass

Milla Jovovich is angry.  For some reason, an Umbrella security guard thinks he can take out this force of nature.  Clearly, he made a mistake, as Milla does a quick circle kick and the guard flies backwards out of frame.  While Milla looked angry during the shot, as soon as the cameras stopped rolling, the star of the Resident Evil franchise was all smiles and joking around with the crew on the set of the latest sequel, Resident Evil: Afterlife.

But let me back up a moment.  It’s Saturday, November 14th, 2009 and I’m sitting on the floor of the Toronto International Airport waiting to fly home.  I’m here in Toronto because Screen Gems is shooting the 4th Resident Evil movie here and thanks to our partners at Omelete, I spent all day yesterday on the set of the latest installment.  I got to see the way they’re filming the movie (which is the first one in 3D), interview the entire cast, learn the challenges of trying to make a movie while pushing the boundaries of film technology, and I learned a lot about what fans can expect in the next chapter of Resident Evil.  It was a great set visit and I’m excited to share my adventure after the jump:

Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas Interview INCEPTION – They Talk 3D, What Kind of Cameras They Used, Pre-Viz, WB, and a Lot More!

At this year’s ShoWest in Las Vegas, I got to participate in a roundtable interview with writer/director Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for their upcoming Warner Bros. movie Inception as a reporter for our partners at Omelete.  While Inception has been shrouded in mystery, at ShoWest, Nolan finally unveiled some of the movie to theater owners and I got to see the footage.

While I still don’t know that much about Inception, the footage revealed Leonardo DiCaprio plays someone who can go into your dreams and steal information.  He also works with others that can do the same thing.  Since many of you might not want to know more than that…just know the footage looked incredible and the film is going to be huge.  For more than that, here’s my full write-up.

Anyway, during the interview Nolan and Thomas talked about trying to keep the film a mystery while still having to promote it.  They also talked about where the idea came from, his relationship with Warner Bros., what kind of cameras he shot with (IMAX, anamorphic 35mm, 65mm, and VistaVision), what does he think of 3D, how much does he pre-viz, and so much more.  If you’re a fan of Chris Nolan, it’s a fantastic interview and one you have to read:

Peter Berg’s BATTLESHIP Will NOT Be in 3D

Battleship has decided to not go 3D, thus showing that director Peter Berg (for the moment) can stay off a bandwagon.  MTV Movies Blog reports that Universal and Berg have decided not to shoot the film in 3D, and I’m sure somewhere James Cameron just puked in his mouth a little bit.  Then again, Berg has crafted what sounds like a much better story that involves aliens but with a District 9-style approach (they’re not just “the enemy”, but a side of a legitimate battle) mixed with good, old-fashioned naval warfare.

Other summer 2012 releases, such as the Spider-Man reboot and Stretch Armstrong, have been reeled in by “The Avatar Effect”, but Berg’s picture will stand apart and attempt to rely on quaint storytelling devices like “compelling characters,” “dramatic tension,” and “exhilarating set pieces.” I’m not saying that the movie will receive these commendations, but at least it’s trying to be a big summer blockbuster without the 3D veneer.   But keep in mind that just because they’re not shooting in 3D, doesn’t mean Universal won’t convert the film to 3D in post-production.

Producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller talk FRIDAY THE 13th Sequel, 3-D, The Birds, BUTCHERHOUSE CHRONICLES

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: June 15th, 2009 at 10:00 am

platinum_dunes_producers_image_brad_fuller_and_andrew_form.jpgLast week I was on the set of Platinum Dunes “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake with a number of other websites. While I’m under embargo from writing about anything I saw while there, I was given permission to post what producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller said about their other projects.

As most of you know, Andrew and Brad have been working non-stop these last few years making horror films like “Friday the 13th”, “The Hitcher”, “The Unborn”, “The Amityville Horror” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. As you might imagine, they’ve got a few other projects in development…

The big news we learned is the sequel to “Friday the 13th” is not yet greenlit, but they’ve got a script being written and they’ve already picked out “a nice date next summer that we hope everyone can see another Friday the 13th on. August 13, 2010.”

They also revealed we’re going to see something that’s never been done in a “Friday” film and that’s see Jason in the snow!

We also talked about if they’d do the film in 3-D and Andrew said, “I suspect it will not be in 3-D, although we’d love to make a 3-D horror movie.” Andrew explained since the cost would be a lot higher for 3-D and with the short turnaround time between filming later this year and a next summer release date, it’s probably not going to happen. But they both seemed excited by the possibilities.

They also talked about why they’re having problems developing “The Birds” remake and their original script called “Butcherhouse Chronicles”. It’s after the jump:

TOY STORY and TOY STORY 2 in 3-D will World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: May 10th, 2009 at 9:28 pm

toy_story_3_movie_image_disney_pixar_june_18__2010.jpgVariety is reporting the 3-D versions of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2″will premiere at the 66th Venice Film Festival in September. While the films will be released theatrically on October 2nd, if you’re at the festival, you’ll get to see them about a month early as the fest is scheduled to run from September 2-12th.

In addition, the festival will be giving a lifetime award to John Jasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Doctor, Lee Unkrich and Andrew Stanton. In a statement, the organizers said, “for the first time in the history of the Venice Film Festival, the award will honor not only the achievement of a single filmmaker but also the contribution of the directors of a visionary studio.”

While many awards are given out to filmmakers and studio heads that aren’t deserved, Pixar is another story. All they make are amazing movies and ones that I cherish. Congrats to everyone.
