Jake Johnson SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED and NEW GIRL interview slice sundance

One of the many films that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director Colin Trevorrow‘s Safety Not Guaranteed.  Written by Derek Connolly, the film’s about “a trio of magazine employees investigate a classified ad seeking a partner for time travel. One employee develops feelings for the paranoid but compelling loner and seeks to discover what he’s really up to.”  It’s based on a real ad that was passed around the internet in 2005 and it stars Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Jake Johnson and Karan Soni.  Shortly after premiering, FilmDistrict bought the film, so you can look forward to seeing it at some point in the future.  For more on the film, you can read Matt’s review.

After seeing the film, I got to sit down with Jake Johnson for an extended interview.  While Johnson has been working steadily over the past few years on TV and in the movies, with the success of FOX’s hit show New Girl (he plays one of Zooey Deschanel‘s roommates), his career has definitely taken a big leap forward.  During the interview we talked about making Safety Not Guaranteed and how he got cast, what’s coming up on New Girl (some of the roommates are going to start hooking up with each other), how Deschanel got him on Twitter, playing Jesus in A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, 21 Jump Street (he plays the principal), and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Warner Bros. has released a new red band trailer for A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.  The sequel takes place six years after Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay—the duo has grown apart, but when Kumar decides to bring a mysterious package to Harold’s house, Kumar inadverdently burns down Harold’s father’s prized Christmas tree.  In place of White Castle, the stoner quest at the center of Christmas is to replace the tree.

John Cho and Kal Penn return as the title characters, joined by Neil Patrick Harris, Patton Oswalt, Thomas Lennon, Danny Trejo, Eddie Kaye Thomas, David Krumholtz, and Elias Koteas.  A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas opens in 3D on November 4th.  If you’re over 17, watch the red band trailer after the jump.

Some new character posters for A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas 3D have been released. They feature stars Kal Penn, John Cho, and the notorious Neil Patrick Harris. In addition to promoting the movie, they also serve as a reminder that Photoshop is every poster-creator’s best friend. The first trailer for the flick was a little underwhelming, but it’s nice to see that NPH seems to be playing a larger part this time around.

Hit the jump to see the posters. A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas 3D opens November 4th.

First Trailer for A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR CHRISTMAS 3D

Earlier today the first image from A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas 3D was released, and now the first trailer for the fllm has hit the web. It’s pretty much everything you’d expect from a Harold & Kumar movie, but with Christmas. The story finds the duo trying to replace Harold’s father-in-law’s Christmas tree by day’s end, but you can probably surmise that all doesn’t go according to plan. While I didn’t find the second entry in the franchise as amusing as the first, hopefully the holiday setting of this one will punch things up. They look to be having fun with (and poking fun at) the 3D, and it appears that we’re in for a sure-to-be-great musical number. Speaking of awesome, Neil Patrick Harris looks to have a bit of an expanded role in the flick, which is very good news.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The movie stars Harris, John Cho, Kal Penn, Paula Garcés, Danneel Harris, Bobby Lee, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Danny Trejo, Amir Blumenfeld, David Burtka, Fred Melamed, and Richard Riehle. A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas 3D opens November 4th.

First Image from A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS [Updated]

The first official image from A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas has gone online.  As you can see, Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) have dressed up as nutcrackers for some reason, but I’m even more amused that the center of the image is Neil Patrick Harris.  He’s only a cameo in the previous two films and I imagine he’ll only have a small role in the new movie.  But you put the focus of the image on the NPH because the NPH can sell anything.  Even his commercials for Comcast make me hate that company a little less (once the commercial is over I go back to hating them).

Hit the jump to check out the image and be on the lookout for the first trailer in the not-too-distant future.  A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas opens in 3D on November 4th. [Update: We've now posted a high resolution version of the image]

Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays Talk THE SMURFS and A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR CHRISTMAS

Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays THE SMURFS, A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR CHRISTMAS interview slice

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of talking to Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Jayma Mays (Glee) for their upcoming film The Smurfs. The film follows the adventures of six Smurfs who are accidentally transported to modern-day New York City. In The Smurfs, Harris and Mays play a married couple with a baby on the way who find and watch over the lost Smurfs. I actually had a lot of fun with this film and I know kids will definitely love it.

During my exclusive interview, we discussed their early memories of the Smurfs, building chemistry after working together during guest stints on each other’s TV show and feeling crazy acting opposite imaginary Smurfs. Harris also teases his role in the upcoming A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas. The Smurfs hits theaters this Friday, July 29.  Hit the jump to watch.

We reported that the latest entry in the Harold & Kumar franchise started filming on June 21st with set photos to prove it, which New Line confirmed today via press release.  The studio conveniently included a full cast list.  We knew that John Cho and Kal Penn would reprise their starring roles, and the indispensable Neil Patrick Harris would likewise return with new faces Patton Oswalt and Thomas Lennon hopping on the H&K line.

That already impressive lineup will be joined by returning characters played by Paula Garcés, Danneel Harris, Bobby Lee, and Eddie Kaye Thomas as well as newbies Danny Trejo, Amir Blumenfeld, David Burtka, Fred Melamed, and Richard Riehle.  Check out all the details in press release form after the jump.

Casting Call: Jeremy Irons Joins MARGIN CALL; Thomas Lennon Signs on for A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR CHRISTMAS and WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER?

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 6th, 2010 at 9:27 pm

We have two pieces of casting news for you tonight.  First up, Deadline reports that Jeremy Irons has signed on to J.C. Chandor’s financial thriller Margin Call.  The story is about the lead-up to the financial collapse in fall 2008 and centers on eight individuals at a prominent investment bank during a tumultuous 24-hour period.  Irons is a great addition to an already impressive cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bettany, Simon Baker, Stanley Tucci and Mary McDonnell.

HAROLD & KUMAR 3 Begins Filming; Patton Oswalt Cast and Images from the Set

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 21st, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Harold & Kumar 3 began filming today in Michigan.  I was under the impression that the film was going to be called A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, but screenwriter Jon Hurwitz tweeted the following today: “Harold & Kumar 3 has officially started shooting. That is all.”  I’m not sure if he called the film that for brevity’s sake or if the project has returned to a tentative title.  Either way, the real news is that filming has begun.

Also tweeting about this advent is star John Cho who reported: “In Michigan. @pattonoswalt in my vicinity, holding a sketch pad, duct tape, and a reel to reel audio recorder. Eeesh.” And in response, Oswalt tweeted: “Maybe it’s this Michigan air, but @JohnTheCho is looking huggable, chloroform-able, and bury-able.”  So we’ve learned two things: 1) Patton Oswalt is in the film and that’s terrific; and 2) Everything has gone horribly wrong and if Oswalt has his way, the production is going to need to recast the role of Harold very soon.  In the meantime, click here to check out Steve’s interview with Cho where the actor talks about the film.  Hit the jump for a couple images from the set.

Harold & Kumar Creators to Serve AMERICAN PIE 4; Todd Strauss-Schulson to Direct A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR CHRISTMAS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 1st, 2010 at 10:03 pm

slice_american_pie_harold_kumar_01.jpg

Today was a good day for raunchy R-rated comedy franchises.  First up, Risky Business reports that Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are coming on board to reboot Universal’s American Pie franchise with American Pie 4 (I can’t believe all those direct-to-DVD movies don’t count).  It’s odd to call the film a “reboot” when not only they’re calling it American Pie 4, but Hurwitz and Schlossberg are seeking to reunite the cast.  Risky Business says, “No deals have been made, but the strong interest on the actors’ end is one reason the project is in high gear.”  Yes, it’s amazing how everyone in the cast except for Eugene Levy (who will do anything, apparently), Alyson Hannigan, and Seann William Scott, also has a languishing acting career and could use another jump start.

Hurwitz and Schlossberg were originally going to direct A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, but they were lured away by the Pie franchise.  Hit the jump for details about how Harold Lee and Kumar Patel are forging ahead without them.

Kal Penn Leaving White House to Film HAROLD & KUMAR 3 This Summer (A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR CHRISTMAS)

by Keith Demko    Posted: March 31st, 2010 at 11:30 am

harold_and_kumar_escape_from_guantanamo_bay_movie_image_john_cho_and_kal_penn.jpgWhat’s more important, a job in the Obama White House or making sure the world get a third Harold & Kumar movie?  Well, thankfully for all fans of great stoner comedies, Kal Penn has apparently chosen the latter.

Deadline is reporting that filming on the third film in the franchise that began with Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle will begin filming by summer, with New Line about to hire a director and considering making the movie 3-D (I can’t say I’m terribly thrilled about that last part, but maybe 3-D pot smoke can give you a contact buzz.)  And since the duo has already gotten high with W. in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, it’s a pretty solid bet that Santa and the boys will be toking up in the third movie, which will be a “holiday” flick for release in 2011 or 2012.

Co-star John Cho revealed the title of the third movie, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, and what it’s about in a Collider interview you can watch here.

Exclusive Interview: John Cho on A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR CHRISTMAS and the Status of the STAR TREK Sequel

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: March 11th, 2010 at 1:03 pm

John_Cho.jpgWhile on the set of ABC’s hit show FlashForward today, I was able to speak with John Cho about the status of A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, and what’s up with the Star Trek sequel.   The good news for fans of the Harold and Kumar series is the sequel is still moving forward and Cho said the plan is to film this June!  He said they’re currently figuring out who will direct the third installment and Neil Patrick Harris is supposed to be in it.  He said the film picks up a few years after the second film and it’s a legitimate holiday movie.  He also said the plan is to still release the film this holiday season in theaters.  Of course with Kal Penn working in Washington, it’s still not 100% the film will happen.  But he seemed very optimistic.

And regarding the Star Trek sequel, he said they’re still working on the script.  We also talked about lens flares and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch the interview or read a bullet point recap of what he told me:
