New SMURFS 2 Logo, SMURFS 3 in Development

After Sony’s The Smurfs grossed a grand total of $563 million at the global box office last year, they waited a grand total of 12 days before green lighting a sequel.  The studio has released an official logo (above) for the sequel, titled The Smurfs 2, but there was another surprising Smurf-related development today.  Apparently, Sony has enough confidence in their sequel writers Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche, that they’re now giving the go-ahead on The Smurfs 3. Given that the production of The Smurfs 2 is already underway with much of the original cast returning (plus a few new faces), things must be coming along quite nicely.

Raja Gosnell, who helmed the first Smurfs film, returns as director for the sequel which also stars Sofia Vergara, Jonathan Winters, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Anton Yelchin and John Oliver. The Smurfs 2 is set for release on July 31st, 2013.  Hit the jump for news on The Smurfs 3.

James McAvoy, Jamie Bell and Alan Cumming to Star in Adaptation of Irving Welsh’s FILTH

A feature film version of Scottish novelist Irvine Welsh’s book Filth is on its way, and it sports quite the cast. James McAvoy, Jamie Bell and Alan Cumming are set to star in the film which centers on an evil Edinburgh cop who has a knack for bigotry and coercing sex from teenage Ecstasy dealers. The Playlist recently spoke with Welsh who confirmed that a feature film version of his novel is on the way, with McAvoy taking on the lead role, Bell playing his sidekick Lennox, and Cumming set to play McAvoy’s boss, Toal.

Welsh is probably best known for his 1993 novel Trainspotting which was adapted for the screen by director Danny Boyle. While I haven’t read Filth, it definitely sounds like some slightly insane material. This sounds like a rather meaty role, and McAvoy should have plenty of opportunities to really show his chops. Bell and Cumming are no slouches either. The plot hinges on a murder mystery that McAvoy’s character must solve, but the guy’s got so many quirks that this will most definitely not be your typical paint-by-numbers thriller. Jon S. Baird (Cass) is directing, with production looking to start in January 2012. Hit the jump to read the synopsis of Welsh’s novel.

Alan Cumming Interview THE SMURFS

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of talking to Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) for The Smurfs. The film follows the adventures of six Smurfs who are accidentally transported to modern-day New York City. In the film, Cumming voices Gutsy Smurf. I had a lot of fun with this movie and I know kids are going to absolutely love it.

Alan Cumming Exclusive Interview THE TEMPEST; Plus an Update on THE SMURFS Movie

Having worked with director Julie Taymor previously on Titus, Alan Cumming signed on to be a part of her vision of Shakespeare’s The Tempest because he was excited to share scenes with acclaimed actor Chris Cooper, as well as the rest of the film’s amazing cast, which includes Helen Mirren, Djimon Hounsou and Russell Brand. In the film, the Scottish actor portrays Sebastian, part of the royal court that finds themselves shipwrecked on a magical island and who, along with Prospera’s (Helen Mirren) brother Antonio (Chris Cooper), plots to kill the grief-stricken King Alonso (David Strathairn) and overthrow him.

During this exclusive interview with Collider, done during the film’s recent press day, Alan Cumming talked about not really seeing his character as a bad guy, being a giggly schoolboy around Chris Cooper, working in the crazy heat of the lavic wasteland in Hawaii and better navigating Julie Taymor’s filmmaking style, this time around. He also gave an update about how his voice work on The Smurfs movie was going, in which he is playing Gutsy Smurf. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Alan Cumming Joins James Franco, Claire Danes, and Catherine Keener in MALADIES

Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) has signed on to star opposite James Franco, Claire Danes, and Catherine Keener in Maladies.  According to THR, Maladies is the story of “a successful actor who retires at a young age due to what is believed to be a mental illness.” Earlier reports refer to Franco’s character as “a former soap star”;  this role is what initially inspired Franco to guest on General Hospital late last year.

The project is currently filming under the direction of Carter, whom Cumming describes as “the artist that James [Franco] has been collaborating with.” Cumming will next be seen as Sebastian in the Shakespeare adaptation The Tempest, which opens December 10th.

5 Movie Clips from Julie Taymor’s THE TEMPEST; Plus 15 High Res Images

With writer-director Julie Taymor’s The Tempest opening December 10 in New York and Los Angeles, we’ve been given 5 clips and 15 high resolution images from the film.  Adapted from William Shakespeare, Taymor has added a twist to the material by switching the gender of the sorcerer Prospero into the sorceress Prospera (who is played by Oscar winner Helen Mirren).  In addition, Taymor has brought along an all-star cast featuring Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, Reeve Carney, Felicity Jones, and Tom Conti.

Eight Clips from BURLESQUE Starring Christina Aguilera, Cher, Cam Gigandet, and Kristen Bell

Sony has sent us eight clips from their upcoming film Burlesque.  Directed by Steve Antin, the film stars Christina Aguilera as an aspiring performer whose vocal talents help revive an ailing Burlesque theater.  The movie also stars Cher, Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Peter Gallagher, Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell, and Stanley Tucci.

New Images from Julie Taymor’s THE TEMPEST

New images have been released for the upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest starring Helen Mirren and Russell Brand.  Written and directed by Julie Taymor, who also helmed 2007’s Across the Universe as well as the fantastic stage adaptation of The Lion King, the Shakesperean comedy features a fantastic cast that includes David Strathairn, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, Chris Cooper and Alan Cumming.  We recently brought you the visually impressive trailer for the film, which hits theaters on December 10^th. Trailer for Julie Taymor’s THE TEMPEST Starring Helen Mirren

The trailer for Julie Taymor’s adaptation of William Shakepeare’s The Tempest has gone online.  While Taymor’s impressive visual style is on display, the tone of the film looks all over the place as it ranges from “Passion” to “Treachery” to “Stupidity”.  Despite a great cast that includes Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, Russell Brand, and Djimon Hounsou, the film has received poor notices at festivals.

Due to the limited film experience of Christina Aguilera and her booming voice, Burlesque faces the brand of skepticism that comes with anchoring your movie with a musician. Writer/director Steve Antin did what he could to surround Aguilera with a seasoned cast, including Cher, who made the leap from song to screen herself with an Oscar win for 1987′s Moonstruck.  Kristen Bell, Cam Gigandet, Eric Dane, and Stanley Tucci round out the cast — check out the first trailer for Burlesque after the jump.

For those looking forward to the musical Burlesque–starring Christina Aguilera, Cher, Kristen Bell, Cam Gigandet, Eric Dane, and Stanley Tucci–seven images from the film are now online.  The movie is about a small-town gal (Aguilera) who runs away from Iowa in search of fame and ends up waitressing at The Burlesque Lounge on the Sunset Strip and goes on to become one of its performers.  The film was written and directed by Steven Antin with input on the script provided by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and Diablo Cody (Juno).

New Trailer for JACKBOOTS ON WHITEHALL Features Ewan McGregor, Tom Wilkinson, and Nazi Puppets

What do you get when you cross Inglourious Basterds with Team America: World Police?  Ewan McGregor, apparently.  At least, the makers of Jackboots on Whitehall were able to convince the very pretty actor — as well as Alan Cumming, Timothy Spall, Richard E. Grant, and Tom Wilkinson — to comprise the voice cast for their puppet-laden satire of World War II.  I don’t know how funny the trailer actually is beyond the inherent absurdity, but if you like the idea of an effete Hitler voiced by Alan Cumming, it’s probably worth a look.  Check it out alongside a plot synopsis after the jump.

First Image of Hank Azaria as Gargamel in THE SMURFS

The first images of Hank Azaria as Gargamel in Sony Pictures The Smurfs have hit the net.  The reason we’re getting our first look at Gargamel is the production was shooting on the streets of New York City and the paparazzi got him. As you can tell in the above image, the production seems to be sticking close to the cartoon.   For more pictures and the synopsis, hit the jump.

The Smurfs get smurfed on August 3, 2011.  The cast includes Neil Patrick Harris (Johan), Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara (Odile-Johan’s wife), Anton Yelchin (Clumsy Smurf), Jonathan Winters (Papa Smurf), Katy Perry (Smurfette), Alan Cumming (Gutsy Smurf), Fred Armisen (Brainy Smurf), George Lopez (Grouchy Smurf), and Paul Reubens (Jokey Smurf).

Casting Call: Paul Reubens in THE SMURFS; Ice Cube in RAMPART; Bryce Dallas Howard in THE HELP

Three quick pieces of casting news for you tonight.  First up, Deadline reports that Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman) has signed on to voice the character of “Jokey” Smurf in the upcoming CG-animated film The Smurfs.  Reubens joins Neil Patrick Harris, George Lopez, Quentin Tarantino, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, Sofia Vergara, Hank Azaria, Jonathan Winters, and Jayma Mays.

First Images from Sean Connery’s Animated Movie SIR BILL

The first images from Sir Billi, the animated film featuring the voice of Sean Connery, have arrived online.  As we reported back November, the movie sounds like someone came up with it while enjoying every drug ever made: “The movie centers on a retired, skateboarding veterinarian who lives in a remote Scottish village and who spearheads the rescue of an illegal fugitive who also happens to be a beaver.”  At the time, part of me thought, “That can’t possibly be right.”  Who would make that?  Sean Connery would make that.  He’s a producer on the film who has been instrumental in getting it made.*  It’s also the first film he’s done since 2003′s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

You can see the images after the jump and keep in mind that indie feature animated films don’t have the money of studios like DreamWorks or Pixar.  But what you really want to see after the jump is the full press release with the detailed synopsis because it makes the story seem even crazier.  It’s like Connery thought to himself, “You know, maybe I can outdo Zardoz…”
