Watch a Teaser for the BATTLESHIP Super Bowl TV Spot

Continuing with this year’s tradition of releasing every commercial online before it airs during Sunday’s Super Bowl, a teaser for the Battleship TV spot has gone online. The spot is a bit different from the previous trailers we’ve seen in that it’s incredibly sci-fi-y. Realizing that they’ve made a movie out of a board game, Universal really seems to be playing up the Transformers comparisons. Essentially, aliens decide to attack Earth at sea. The whole “Battleship” aspect comes into play as a giant forcefield appears around a group of naval ships and the alien attackers, locking everyone into a confined area in which to fire away. I’m really hoping that the tone of Peter Berg’s flick is cheeky and fun, but I’m not entirely sure that’s what we’re getting.

Hit the jump to check out the teaser. You can read our Battleship editing room visit here. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Liam NeesonBattleship opens May 18, 2012.

New Trailer, Poster, and Images for BATTLESHIP

A new trailer for director Peter Berg‘s Battleship has landed online. Three thoughts: First off, there needs to be a comma between “Hasbro” and “the”.  Second, Hasbro and Universal want this movie to be Transformers so badly and it’s utterly pathetic to watch them try.  Third, for a movie that supposedly takes place at sea, there’s an awful lot of land.  But watching this trailer, I’m beginning to understand why Universal is unloading all of their Hasbro properties as fast as possible.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with a new poster. Click here for Hunter’s visit to the edit bay and find out what he was told about the movie. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Liam NeesonBattleship opens May 18, 2012.

New Posters for WAR HORSE and MELANCHOLIA

New posters have gone online for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Lars Von Trier’s MelancholiaWar Horse continues to be a tough sell mainly because the lead character is a horse and the horse doesn’t talk.  You can put Mr. Ed in your World War I drama, Mr. Spielberg, but a non-talking horse?  How will that play in Peoria?  At least the poster is pretty-looking.

As for Melancholia, it’s a collection of character posters plus one interesting addition.  Von Trier gets his own poster.  It’s the first time I’ve seen a director who wasn’t also an actor in the movie get his or her own character poster.  Of course, Von Trier is a bit of a character and his poster even bears a fake seal proclaiming “Official Persona non Grata – Cannes 2011″.  Hit the jump to check out the posters.  War Horse opens December 28th.  Melancholia hits OnDemand on October 7th and opens in theaters on November 11th.

TIFF 2011: MELANCHOLIA Review

Lars von Trier’s depression is well-documented. He’s a visionary plagued by his own personal demons. His fears and phobias have kept him out of the skies and the rush of international film promotion. In 2007 they even led him to say, “basically, I’m afraid of everything in life, except filmmaking.” His depression was so crippling, in fact, that it had made him “a blank sheet of paper” that year, unable to create. Luckily, his struggles did not keep him from the directorial chair. The self-proclaimed “melancholy Dane” returned to work and dug to the very depths of empathy with his harrowing Antichrist, and now he’s dared to display his emotional demons front and center with the apocalyptic Melancholia. STRAW DOGS Review

Remaking a well-known film can leave you with many problems. If you stick too closely to the original, the audience will call you on it and more than anything, the film’s twists and turns can become predictable bores. Luckily for director Rod Lurie, he chose to remake a film that has a strong cinemaphile profile but never caught on with the mainstream crowd back in 1971: Straw Dogs. Sam Peckinpah’s controversial little film on violence and the nature of man starred Dustin Hoffman, yet never caught on, only raking in $11 million worldwide. What this means is that despite only changing the setting from England to the redneck South of the United States, Lurie’s tale can exist as a wholly new experience for the average filmgoer. However, your appreciation for that may be tempered by the controversial parts largely being in tact. Hit the jump for my full review.

Will Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling or Alexander Skarsgård Land in Steven Soderbergh’s THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.?

Last month, we reported that George Clooney had dropped out of director Steven Soderbergh’s adaptation of the 1960s spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. Prior to that, it was believed that Clooney would fill Robert Vaughn’s shoes as the character Napoleon Solo. Although we’re still unsure who Warner Bros. would like to take on that part, it does seem as if we have a better idea of who the studio would like to see fill another primary Man from U.N.C.L.E. role, that of Illya Kuryakin (played in the original by David McCallum). Apparently, Warner Bros. is looking for an actor in his 20s to play Illya, and at the top of their wish list? Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling and Alexander Skarsgård. More after the jump.

TIFF 2011: MELANCHOLIA Review

Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia opens in magnificent, operatic fashion.  Birds fall from the sky, strands of light stream forth from the finger tips of Kirsten Dunst, the ground sinks beneath Charlotte Gainsbourg’s feet and then a bigger planet obliterates our planet.  This is all beautifully shot, set to classical music from a booming orchestra, and played in slow motion.  It’s a prelude to the film’s big ideas, terrific performances, and thoughtful examination of what it means to be happy and if happiness is even worth pursing.  But for all of its grandiosity and introspection, Melancholia never manages to strike an emotional connection.

Behind the Scenes Look at BATTLESHIP

Entertainment Tonight got a behind-the-scenes look at Peter Berg’s upcoming board game adaptation, Battleship.  In this ET segment, you’ll get Rihanna being completely unconvincing as a navy officer (the character’s tattoos “dirty her up a bit”, and then I burst out laughing when she said “and of course, no make-up.”) plus a breakdown of how the main characters are related to one another.  Helpfully glossed over: details of the whole alien invasion thing that pits battleships against spaceships.  There’s probably nothing in this behind-the-scenes preview that’s going to change the opinion you had after seeing the trailer.  You’ll just get a better idea of how expensive the movie is.

New Trailer for Lars von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA

The U.S. trailer for writer/director Lars von Trier’s Melancholia has landed online. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgård and John Hurt, the film pits Justine and Michael’s (Dunst and Skarsgård) wedding against the backdrop of the end of the world. As I’ve written before, I’m not hopelessly devoted to von Trier’s previous work, but Melancholia looks beautifully reflective and I can’t wait to check it out.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Melancholia premieres on VOD on October 7th, hits U.K. theaters on October 30th and will enjoy a limited theatrical release in the U.S. beginning on November 11th.

Three Clips and 10 Minutes of Behind-the-Scenes Footage from STRAW DOGS

Three clips and approximately ten minutes of behind-the-scenes footage from director Rod Lurie’s Straw Dogs remake are now available online. Starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgård, James Woods and Walton Goggins, the film is set in the deep South and centers on screenwriter David (Marsden) and his wife Amy (Bosworth) who return to her small hometown and encounter trouble in the form of her ex-boyfriend Charlie (Skarsgård).

Perhaps due to the widespread acclaim of director Sam Peckinpah’s Oscar-nominated 1971 original starring Dustin Hoffman, the remake has been under fire by many since its inception. That said, I’m willing to give it a chance if for no other reason than I generally like both Marsden and Skarsgård’s work.  Check out the clips and behind-the-scenes footage after the jump. Straw Dogs opens on September 16th.

UK Trailer for MELANCHOLIA

The UK trailer for Lars von Trier’s upcoming sci-fi/disaster drama Melancholia has landed online. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård and Kiefer Sutherland, the film features Justine (Dunst) and Michael’s (Skarsgård) wedding taking place against the backdrop of impending doom. I can’t claim to be a huge fan of von Trier’s previous work, but everything I’ve seen from Melancholia has intrigued me. It looks beautifully tragic and, for whatever reason, kind of nostalgic to the point that I can’t wait to see it.

Check out the UK trailer after the jump. Click here to watch the first trailer from the film. Melancholia will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month as well as the New York Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. It hits UK theaters on October 30th before getting a VOD release in the United States on October 7th. It will receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S. beginning on November 11th.

Alexander Skarsgard in Talks to Star Opposite Brit Marling in Eco-Thriller THE EAST

I have not started watching season four of True Blood yet, and I probably never will.  But at the end of the season, I will seek out a compilation of the Eric scenes, because Alexander Skarsgard is a boss.  Filmmakers agree, and are increasingly wooing Sarsgard for a variety of roles, including big studio releases like Straw Dogs and Battleship, and smaller fare like Melancholia and What Maisie Knew.  His new role is an interesting entry in the latter category: Skarsgard is in talks to join fellow rising star Brit Marling in The East.

The story centers on a female FBI agent who infiltrates an eco-terrorist group that call themselves The East.  According to Heat Vision, Skarsgard would play “the leader of the group who seeks revenge against unethical corporations.”  Zat Batmanglij will direct from a script he co-wrote with Marling—the duo previously collaborated on Sundance darling The Sound of My Voice.  Fox Searchlight, the home of Sound of My Voice, is the likely home for the production, tentatively scheduled to shoot in Nashville in October.  We will definitely keep our eye on The East as the project develops.

First Trailer and Poster for BATTLESHIP Starring Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson and Alexander Skarsgard

The first trailer for Peter Berg’s Battleship has gone online.  After watching this trailer, I can’t help but wonder if back in March the folks over at Universal were shaking their heads and thinking, “Man…I really wish Battleship had some out before Battle: Los Angeles.”  Sure, some of the characters are different as you have the roguish Taylor Kitsch standing in for the battle-hardened Aaron Eckhart, but it all comes back to “We’re fightin’ the aliens fer realz.”  The trailer’s two biggest selling points are Brooklyn Decker’s cleavage and the reveal of the aliens’ spaceship.  I guess it’s a good thing that audiences haven’t already seen eight movies this year that revolve around Brooklyn Decker’s cleavage.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with the teaser poster.  Battleship opens May 18, 2012.
