Indie Spotlight: Director Joe Dante’s Horror Comedy BURYING THE EX Starring Anton Yelchin, Alexandra Daddario, Ashley Green & Oliver Cooper

One great thing about the state of crowd-funding today is that director’s like Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling, The ‘Burbs) can afford to bring their own creative vision to light without bowing to studio pressures.  The downside is that they’re dependent on fans to foot the bill.  In the case of Dante’s latest project, Burying the Ex, a big portion of the donations will go to applying CG effects to augment his practical work on set.  In addition to helping fund the film, donors can get a variety of rewards in return, from DVDs/Blu-rays, posters and t-shirts, to signed memorabilia, collectible props and VIP premiere passes.

Burying the Ex centers on Max (Anton Yelchin), a nice guy who begins to have second thoughts about continuing his relationship with his girlfriend, Evelyn (Ashley Greene) after they move in together.  Max is saved the trouble of breaking up with his overbearing partner when she dies suddenly in a freak accident.  Back on the single scene a few weeks later, Max meets up with Olivia (Alexandra Daddario), who might just be his soul mate.  Too bad Evelyn is back from the grave as an undead zombie who’s out to get him back, by any means necessary.  Hit the jump for more.

TOP 5: New Trailer for THOR: THE DARK WORLD, ELYSIUM Interviews, New DOCTOR WHO, PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS, WE’RE THE MILLERS

Last night I had the chance to check out We’re the Millers with a group of friends and while I wouldn’t classify it as a “Must See!”, it’s a plenty serviceable R-rated comedy. As you can probably tell from the trailers, English actor Will Poulter delivers some of the biggest laughs and, for my money, it’s hard to go wrong with Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn in most anything. Aside from its tendency to settle for just being “OK”, my only real gripe would be that the film’s premise exceeds its execution. On paper, it has the potential to be a hilarious, yet incisive, play on the nuclear family. On screen, it turns the convention on its head before ultimately forcing its characters to conform to many of its tenets.

Although I’m sure you can never get enough of my one paragraph film reactions, we must move on to this week’s Top 5. Included this week is the new trailer for Thor: The Dark World, Elysium interviews with Neill Blomkamp and more, the new Doctor Who, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters interviews, and a slew of We’re the Millers interviews with the cast and director Rawson Marshall Thurber. Per routine, a brief recap and link to each of the above kindly requests your attention after the jump.

Opening this week is director Thor Freudenthal’s fantasy sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.  The follow-up finds Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home.  The film also stars Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Leven Rambin, Douglas Smith, Stanley Tucci, Nathan Fillion, Jake Abel, Anthony Head and Sean Bean.  For more on the film, watch five clips, the trailer, or read Matt’s review.

At the recent New York City press day, I landed a video interview with Alexandra Daddario.  She talked about when she first heard they’d be making a sequel, what she wants for her character, what it’s like making a film for adults and kids in the same year, who she plays on HBO’s True Detective, and when Warner Bros. will cast her as Wonder Woman (which I think she could pull off).  Hit the jump to watch.

PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Review

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters makes a great case for second chances.  I haven’t read Rick Riordan‘s Percy Jackson novels, but the 2010 adaptation of the first book, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, was abysmal.  There wasn’t one good thing about the film, and it felt like the series would go the way of other stillborn fantasy franchises.  But in the demigod’s second adventure, director Thor Freudenthal find a place for the young hero by tapping into a solid PG adventure movie that takes the maturity of its cast and pairs it with fun action pieces, charming humor, and an enthusiasm that gives Percy Jackson a rare second chance at a first impression.

New Featurette for PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Brings the Myths to Our World

20th Century Fox has released a new featurette for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.  The follow-up finds Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home and other demigods.  This is the first bit of marketing that has me interested in the film since it shows how this time around the mythological aspects carry over into our world rather than mythological creatures simply coming to Percy like in the first movie.  There’s still plenty of emphasis on those creatures, but I like that the sequel looks like it’s willing to have more fun with the myths such as Hermes (Nathan Fillion) running UPS-like delivery service.

International Trailer for PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS Goes Heavy on Action and Shows Most of the Movie

An international trailer has been released for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.  The follow-up finds Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home and other demigods.  The trailer shows the giant action on display to the point where I’m wondering where a sequel could possibly go.  The villain is the father of the gods, Kronos, with an assist from the previous film’s villain, Luke (Jake Abel).  How do you top the father of the gods?  In any event, like the first movie, there’s a hodgepodge of Greek mythology that brings in the Cyclops, the Golden Fleece, and other icons.  I’m still not sold on the picture even though this trailer basically gives everything away.  But with new director Thor Freudenthal at the helm and no need to go through the origin story, perhaps the sequel will be far superior to the first film.

A new trailer Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters has been released.  The follow-up finds the titular Percy (Logan Lerman) and his friends venturing to a mythical land known as the Sea of Monsters to retrieve a golden fleece that is essential to the survival of his home.  Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) takes over directing duties from Chris Columbus this time around, and this trailer actually looks pretty fun.  The creature designs are neat and the action sequences look to be visually exciting, and we also get an extended look at Nathan Fillion as Hermes.  Lerman really impressed with his performance in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and he already looks more in command in Sea of Monsters than he did in the first film.

The first trailer Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters has been released.  The first Percy Jackson received mixed critical response and lukewarm box office, but the sequel seems to be retaining the same tone even though Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) has replaced Chris Columbus at the helm.  Hopefully, the sequel will have a better plot, but since this trailer appears to give away a lot of the movie, it already looks overcrowded with the best moment belonging to Nathan Fillion, who plays Hermes.

As we head into the beginning of January, we prepare for a rather drastic shift in new releases from awards contenders to genre fare.  The critically reviled The Devil Inside kicked off 2012, and first out of the gate in 2013 is another horror film, Texas Chainsaw 3D.  A few new images from the film have landed online, giving us a couple of new looks at ol’ Leatherface.  The pic is a direct sequel to the 1974 original and picks up where that film left off: a young woman has escaped the horrors of the Sawyer family and alerted authorities.  The townspeople descend on the Sawyer household and burn it to the ground, seemingly putting an end to the family’s reign of terror.  The story then jumps forward to present day where a young woman has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she didn’t know she had, and naturally things take a dark turn when she goes snooping around.
