The exorcism sub-genre got off to a grand start all the way back in 1973 with William Friedkin’s masterful horror film The Exorcist, and since then, we’ve had a neverending parade of progressively tedious, hackneyed exorcism flicks. But last year’s The Rite has just arrived on Blu-ray (and DVD, if that’s your preferred format), and maybe you’ve found yourself gazing at that oddly-similar-to-Tommy-Wiseau’s-The-Room cover box at your local movie retailer. Maybe you’ve gotten it into your head that The Rite is worth renting, maybe even buying. Hey, you think, maybe the inclusion of Anthony Hopkins indicates that The Rite will be a step above, say, The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Maybe you’re possessed, and the Devil’s the one whispering this madness in your ear. Read on for our Blu-ray review of The Rite, after the jump….

In the eyes of casting directors, there is something very science-fictional about Alice Braga: I Am Legend. Blindness. Repo Men. Predators. Falling in line, writer/director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) will employ Braga to bring his vision of the future to life in Elysium. (Initially there was some Braga confusion. Deadline first reported that it was Sonia Braga who joined the film — the post has since been updated to reflect that it is in fact Sonia’s niece Alice who signed on.)
Braga joins Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura, and Sharlto Copley in Elysium, scheduled for release on March 1, 2013. The plot is a mystery for now, by the “unabashedly big movie” is said to take place 100 years in the future on another planet. Foster recently confirmed she will play “the head of an alien planet,” if that offers a clue about what you’re in for.

Opening next weekend is director Mikael Hafstroem’s (1408) supernatural thriller The Rite and it stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciaran Hinds, and Toby Jones. “Inspired by true events, The Rite follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith.” For more on the film, watch some clips here.
I recently got to participate in a roundtable interview with Hopkins. During the extended interview, Hopkins talked about what drew him to this project, how does he work with directors as most could be intimidated, how is he so good at scaring people, upcoming projects like Thor and 360, and he also talked about painting, composing music, and so much more. Anyway, I recently got to sit down with Alice Braga and we talked about how she got involved in the film, what it was like to work with Anthony Hopkins, filming in Rome and Budapest, what she recommends if you visit Brazil, and she also told me about how she got involved in Walter Salles’ adaptation of On the Road, who she plays, and what it was like to make the film. Today, we have six clips from the upcoming thriller The Rite. The film stars Anthony Hopkins as an unorthodox priest who teaches a young student (Colin O’Donoghue) about exorcisms. And since exorcisms are a tricky business, creepy stuff inevitably happens. While every film involving exorcisms has to sit in the shadow of The Exorcist, perhaps The Rite can find its own way.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for The Rite, a supernatural thriller purported to be inspired by true events. As scripted by Michael Petroni (Possession), The Rite tells the story of a seminary student attending “exorcism school” at the Vatican: “While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest who introduces him to the darker side of his faith.”
Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciaran Hinds, and Toby Jones star in The Rite, directed by Mikael Håfström (1408). Hit the jump for the trailer and synopsis.

Predator is one of the great action movies of the 1980’s. John McTiernan directed the hell out of it, and it is one of the great signature Arnold Schwarzenegger roles. They tried sequelizing it, and then there were the pathetic Alien vs. Predator films – Fox knew there was a franchise here, they just didn’t know how to pull it off. So they hired Robert Rodriguez to produce a new sequel that ignored all the other spin-offs, and to class it up, they ripped off James Cameron by naming it Predators. Nimrod Antal directs Adrian Brody, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Louis Ozawa Changchein, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Oleg Taktarov as a group of killers rounded up by Predators, and let loose on an Alien planet to defend themselves. In this case, the hunters become the hunted until they become hunters hunting the hunters who are hunting them. My review of Predators on Blu-ray after the jump.

The trailer for Mikael Håfström’s new film The Rite, which previously made its debut at the 5th annual “Scream Awards”, has gone online. Starring Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins, the film is another one of those Catholic Priests vs. the Devil flicks that people seem to enjoy so much these days and is reminiscent of the Eli Roth-produced The Last Exorcism which premiered earlier this year, though without the shaky, low-budget camera look.
The film also stars Alice Braga (Predators), Ciarán Hinds (Munich), and Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner). Håfström recently directed the period piece Shanghai starring John Cusack and Gong Li, which was released in China earlier this year but has yet to make its way to the states. He also directed the 2007 Stephen King-thriller 1408, also starring Cusack. Hit the jump to check out the trailer which, typical or not, still looks freaky as Hell. The Rite is set to open on January 28, 2011.

An unofficial photo of Kristen Stewart as Marylou on the set of the long-in-development adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road has landed online. The film co-stars Garrett Hedlund as Dean Moriarty, Sam Riley as Sal Paradise, Kirsten Dunst as Camille, Amy Adams as Jane, and Viggo Mortensen as Old Bull Lee.
Filming began on August 4th, and we received a press release announcing that Steve Buscemi, Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Alice Braga (Predators), Tom Sturridge (Pirate Radio), Danny Morgan (the TV show Off the Hook), and Terrence Howard. However, we don’t know which roles they’ll be playing. I’d be able to provide an educated guess but I haven’t read the book yet. It’s currently sitting in a pile of other classic works of literature that I keep by my bed to make me feel bad about myself.

Earlier today I had the opportunity to see a screening of Nimrod Antal’s Predators, followed by a press conference with Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez. While I can’t say much about the film, just know that I loved it. In our 25-minute press conference, Antal and Rodriguez spoke about:

An age-restricted, international trailer for Nimrod Antal’s Predators has hit the net. It’s gory, has an amazing one-liner from Laurence Fishburne, and is way too spoilery. There’s only a handful of actors in this movie and the trailer shows one of them getting killed. Obviously, in a movie where all the characters are prey for the Predators, folks are going to die. But you don’t need to show me which ones and how they’re going to die. Why should I even have to say that? It’s common freaking sense. Also, it’s not even an inventive kill, so what exactly are they showing off?
Basically, this trailer shows too much. If that doesn’t bother you, then hit the jump to check it out. Predators hits theaters on July 9th.
UPDATE: Fox has asked us to remove the images.
If you’ve been looking forward to Predators, today is Christmas. That’s because a TON of new images from the Robert Rodriguez produced film have hit the net and they’re after the jump. The only thing to know is…if you’re trying to stay spoiler free, you might want to avoid the images. You are warned.

Three Italian websites have premiered posters for Nimrod Antal’s upcoming film Predators. The posters are English but they’re for the international market. For those who don’t know, Predators ignores the events of Predator 2 and the Alien vs. Predator movies. Instead, it’s about a group of killers transported to a planet that functions as a game reserve for the predators. The film was produced by Robert Rodriguez and stars Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Laurence Fishburne.

While Alice Braga is very famous in Brazil as she’s stared in many movies in her native country, she’s started making inroads in America as she’s one of the leads in I Am Legend, Redbelt, Repo Men and Crossing Over. On top of those films, she’s the only female lead in director Nimród Antal’s Predators, as she plays Isabelle – a Brazilian SAD black ops sniper.
When I was on the set of Predators last December, I was able to participate in a roundtable interview with Braga. She talked about who she plays, training to play a sniper, what’s it like carrying around the gun, and I asked her thoughts on the two different endings to I Am Legend. It’s a great interview that you can check out after the jump:

Adrien Brody is crawling towards the camera. The tunnel is dark and claustrophobic and as he crawls along he’s shining a flashlight back and forth to see what’s around him. The tunnel looks like it’s been empty for years. As he moves further along, the camera’s dolly pulls back to reveal just how far he has to crawl and it’s much further than you originally suspected. With the low lighting, and the darkness, it’s the perfect place to enter the world of director Nimrod Antal’s Predators.
While you’re going to be reading my words very close to the release of Predators, I’m actually writing them on December 18, 2009. As I type this, I’m flying back to Los Angeles from Austin, Texas as I spent all day yesterday (along with a number of other online journalists) on the set of Predators. Even though I wasn’t sure what to expect when we got to set as I have been vocal against the movies 20th Century Fox has been making over the past few years, I’ll admit that I left very impressed and also very confident that the Robert Rodriquez-produced Predators movie is going to kick some ass this summer.
