Have you ever looked into your ice beverages and thought, “This drink is all well and good, but these ice cubes are so dull.” Well, they don’t have to be! You can geek up that drink with some help from nerdy ice cube trays. You know what’s better than drinking a nice cold soda? Drinking a nice cold soda with a tiny frozen Han Solo in it. Or if you feel that Star Wars already has its wampa mitts into too much merchandise already, go with a little R-rated sci-fi and throw some Alien eggs into your iced-tea. Nothing refreshes like a frozen xenomorph fetus.

Fox has done a pretty good job of keeping the lid on Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus. Of course, everything will likely be known a month before the film opens, but for now: mystique! The movie still indirectly ties in to Alien by exploring the mystery of the Space Jockey (the giant dead creature found by the crew of the Nostromo in the first act). Says Scott:
Yeah, so there you have that… I always thought it was amazing that no one ever asked who he was, and why was he there? What was all that about? I sat thinking about this for a while and thought, “Well, there’s a story! And the other four [films] missed it!” So, here it is.
Hit the jump for more on what he had to say about the prequel/not-a-prequel, and why he removed the famous xenomorphs from the equation. Prometheus opens June 8, 2012 and stars Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, and Michael Fassbender.

A week ago, we brought you an early look at scans from Ridley Scott’s new Alien-“prequel” Prometheus. They showed actors Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) and Logan Marshall-Green (Devil) in their luminescent-collared spacesuits exploring what looked like ruins of an unknown planet. They also showed stars Charlize Theron (Hancock) and Idris Elba (Thor) on the bridge of the eponymous ship. Lording over the explorers in the background was a monolithic face looking down on a field of what appear to be primitive versions of Alien eggs down in the fog. Well now we can show you all of that in more clarity, along with a couple of new images from the film. With clearer images available, a trailer should be right around the corner. Prometheus opens in 3D on June 8th, 2012. Hit the jump to check out the images.

It’s been fun calling Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus an Alien prequel/not-prequel. The movie started out as a straight-up prequel to his classic 1979 sci-fi horror film, but then turned into something of a quasi-spin-off when Scott said back in January, “The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA.” In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy blog, Scott says the last eight minutes of Prometheus will evolve into “a pretty good DNA of the Alien one.”
Hit the jump for more on what Scott had to say about the film plus my speculation on what will happen in the last eight minutes. The film stars Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, and Guy Pearce. Prometheus opens in 3D on June 8, 2012.

The official Lost podcast was one of my first ventures into internet radio. If I learned anything from hours of listening to showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse deconstruct their show, I learned those two men are fantastic at elaborating on past story and teasing future developments in a way that excites more than it spoils. Lindelof worked without Cuse on the script for Prometheus, but that skill thankfully carries over.
MTV spoke to Lindelof at Comic-Con, when he shared what it was like to collaborate with Ridley Scott, revealed more about the roles of Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron, and explained a link between the prequel and the Alien franchise. Read the quotes after the jump.

Prometheus probably has the highest ratio of Audience Anticipation to Public Information of any movie in production. It’s a quasi-Alien prequel (hence the anticipation), but the only solid detail we know is Prometheus takes place in outer space. The first image released by Warner Bros. confirms that much. Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, and possibly Ben Foster star. I can’t tell you definitively who is in that space suit, but my bet is on Rapace, the female lead in the movie. We should learn more at Fox Comic-Con panel later today — check back soon for our recap.
Prometheus is scheduled for release on June 8, 2012. See the new image after the jump.

Yesterday, it looked as if we were getting a huge amount of info on Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel. Vulture reported that the film was called “Paradise”, and that Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) were being offered roles. But last night, Chris Petrikin, 20th Century Fox’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications, took to the Twitter machine to make some clarifications. He first stated that the title is not “Paradise”. Presumably, “Paradise” could just be an alias for the production. It did seem odd that Fox would make an Alien movie and not put the word “Alien” in the title.
In other clarification news, The Playlist reports that according to a source who’s close to the production, the casting rumors regarding Fassbender and Yeoh are “just plain wrong.” Hit the jump for more rumor control on the Alien prequel.

While we reported on one of those pesky internet rumors the other day about how the release date on Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel had been pushed back an entire year, it turns out the validity of said rumor was less than solid. Vulture reports that the release date, in fact, has not been pushed back. But that’s not all! The title of said Alien prequel is reportedly Paradise. In addition, Scott has been looking to cast actors Michael Fassbender and Michelle Yeoh in a couple of the supporting parts. Hit the jump to find out what roles Fassbender and Yeoh would play, some details on the plot, why Fassbender’s deal may not work out, and how that crazy internet rumor started in the first place.

For those itching to see Ridley Scott’s prequel to Alien, you may as well sit tight because it looks like it’s gonna be a while. Last we heard, visual fx guru Henry South had tweeted that he had begun work on the prequel. That tweet has since been deleted and Script Flags now reports that the release date of the film has been pushed back an entire year to 2013. Not without a silver lining, the same report also says that actresses Olivia Wilde and Noomi Rapace are currently the frontrunners to take on the lead role in the film.
At this time, there’s no official word on why the release date has been pushed back or even if that means that principal photography is being pushed back as well. Conceivably, the flick could still be shooting early next year and the studio could just be giving Scott more time for post-production. Hit the jump for more on the prequels.

Holy God. That’s one of the first reactions one has to 20th Century Fox’s six disc Blu-ray release of the Alien Anthology. It was put together by Charles de Lauzirika, and he’s the guy who’s been doing all the supplements for this franchise for years now, including the awkwardly named Alien Quadrilogy. His task was to make a collection that had not only improved picture and sound quality, but all the supplements of previous releases, and even more additional content. He and his team delivered; this is the mother lode. Of course, the series is also presented immaculately, with each film offering two cuts, deleted scenes, commentaries and isolated scores. The six disc set has over 60 hours of supplements. It’s mind-boggling and overwhelming, but also the perfect franchise for this sort of study, and it’s perfect for Blu-ray. Our humbled review of the Alien Anthology Blu-ray set follows after the jump.

We all own far too many DVDs. Nowadays, a lot of us are buying way too many Blu-rays. Loaded with over 50 hours of bonus materials and theatrical and special editions of all the Alien movies, the box set is one of the most comprehensive home video releases ever. In July, we reported the exciting news that Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof would be re-writing the script for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel (or possibly prequels). Vulture is now reporting that Lindelof has turned in his script and that the execs over at 20th Century Fox love it. Part of the reason they like it so much is that it doesn’t add expensive set pieces but remains “creatively engaging”. They’re also happy that that script keeps the project at a PG-13 rating. Finally, this new picture is meant to return the franchise to its roots and is more off a horror-suspense film than an Aliens-style action flick.
However, there’s still going to be a space marine. Hit the jump for more on who Fox wants to play the lead.

Ridley Scott has not settled on who to cast in the lead role of the forthcoming 3D Alien prequel(s), but as far as I can tell, he doesn’t want an American. The UK-born Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia) let slip last month that Scott wanted to get her on the phone to discuss the project. According to Deadline, the list of actresses Scott has met with since then includes fellow Brit Carey Mulligan (An Education) and rising Swedish star Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
This is yet another chapter in the “Rapace takes Hollywood by storm” saga, which includes a role in Sherlock Holmes 2 and negotiations to star opposite Jeremy Renner in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters; Rapace reportedly made “a strong impression” on Mr. Scott. And I’m fully in support of Mulligan cropping up in any casting decision that calls for a twentysomething female. The list of actresses with whom Scott met is in all probability lengthy, so we’ll see in the coming weeks who lands the role. Hit the jump for a rundown on what we know about the prequel.

Legendary director Ridley Scott helped close the first Los Angeles Times Hero Complex Film Festival in style Sunday. He screened two of his most accomplished films, Alien and Blade Runner, and in between simultaneously inspired and gave the world some awesome news on his two upcoming Alien prequels.
In the original Alien, right before Kane (John Hurt) gets planted with a Face Hugger, he sees the skeleton of a giant being sitting in a chair. This being is regularly referred to as “The Space Jockey” and Scott said he always wondered who being was and what was its story. He said that being now has a story. The script has been written and he is currently in preproduction on a set of films that will begin to tell how “The Space Jockey” fits into the world of Alien.
Hit the jump to read more details about these upcoming Alien movies as well as the entire run down of Scott’s Q&A. Plus, don’t forget to read about Leonard Nimoy from Friday and Christopher Nolan from Saturday.

One of the best geek reporters in the mainstream media today is Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times who writes the blog Hero Complex. Well, tickets just went on sale for his first ever Hero Complex Film Festival taking place June 11-13 at the Mann Chinese 6 in Hollywood, CA.
First up on June 11 is a screening Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home followed by a Q&A with Leonard Nimoy. Then, on Saturday June 12 there will be a double feature of Insomnia and The Dark Knight with a Christopher Nolan Q&A sandwiched in between.
