All Good Things falls into the tricky subgenre of unsolved crime drama. Whether handled expertly, as in the case of David Fincher’s Zodiac, or sloppily, as in Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia, there’s something inherently dissatisfying about these films. Perhaps it’s because, on a primal level, we prefer our monsters caught and killed. Ancient myths were certainly never built on ambiguity and irresolution. Then again, ancient listeners never had the chance to watch a Blu-ray like Magnolia’s All Good Things, which not only includes the speculative story of a possibly monstrous human being, but also a fascinatingly bizarre audio commentary from the possible monster himself, Robert Durst. My review after the jump.
All Good Things stars Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine, Half Nelson) as the Durst-esque David Marks, a young man born into a real estate dynasty presided over by bullying patriarch Sanford Marks, played by Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). Marks appears at the top of the film as a likably rebellious son who wants nothing to do with the family business and everything to do with the lovely Katie McCarthy, played by Kirsten Dunst (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Virgin Suicides), whom he eventually marries.

For those aware that McCarthy’s real life counterpart Kathie Durst went missing in 1982, a haunting pall hangs over the film’s early scenes of newlywed bliss. Many have long suspected Durst of playing a role in his wife’s disappearance and his 2003 trial for killing and dismembering an acquaintance named Morris ...

The drama All Good Things, co-starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, was inspired by the events of the most notorious missing person’s case in New York history. Both a love story and murder mystery, the story of Robert Durst, of the wealthy real estate dynasty, was that of a man suspected of, but never tried for, the murder of his wife Kathie, who disappeared in 1982 and was never found. Renamed David Marks (Ryan Gosling) and Katie McCarthy (Kirsten Dunst) for the film, newly discovered facts, court records and speculation about the case and the circumstances surrounding it are the foundation for an imaginative and spellbinding story of family, obsession, love and loss.

During a roundtable interview at the film’s press day, actress Kirsten Dunst talked about her desire to make sure her character never came across as a victim, the experience of meeting some of the real woman’s family members and how difficult it was for co-star Ryan Gosling to play the more physically aggressive moments. She also talked about what it was like working with Lars Von Trier on Melancholia, said she’s looking forward to seeing what they do with the Spider-Man franchise since she’s a fan of Andrew Garfield, and mentioned that she’d be shooting her role in On The Road in a couple weeks. Check out what she had to say after the jump:

Magnolia has released the trailer for Andrew Jarecki's All Good Things, which stars Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, and Frank Langella. It's not a bad trailer when you consider that it doesn't really tell you what the movie is about. All Good Things is based on the true story surrounding the mysterious disappearances of the wife of real estate heir Robert Durst. While I'm not sold on the film as a whole, it looks like it could be a must-see for Gosling's performance alone.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. All Good Things will be available on VOD on November 5th and opens in theaters on December 3rd.

Here's the official synopsis for All Good Things:
Inspired by the most notorious missing person's case in New York history, ALL GOOD THINGS is a love story and murder mystery set against the backdrop of a New York real estate dynasty in the 1980s. Produced and directed by Andrew Jarecki (director of the Academy Award-nominated doc Capturing the Friedmans and producer of Catfish), the film was inspired by the story of Robert Durst, scion of the wealthy Durst family. Mr. Durst was suspected but never tried for killing his wife Kathie who disappeared in 1982 and was never found. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella as the powerful patriarch, and captures the emotion and complexity of this real-life unsolved mystery.
