Amber Heard to Star in Revenge Thriller MOTOR CITY Opposite Dominic Cooper

Director Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) has found his female lead for the thriller Motor City. Deadline reports that Amber Heard (The Rum Diary) has landed the female lead in the pic opposite Dominic Cooper. The film centers on a man who gets released from prison and sets out on a revenge mission to hunt down the people who framed him. There are currently no details on Heard’s role, but the actress has been gaining traction as of late starring in Drive Angry, NBC’s now-cancelled The Playboy Club, and most recently The Rum Diary with Johnny Depp.

Cooper recently starred in Captain America: The First Avenger and drew positive remarks for his performance in this year’s The Devil’s Double. He’ll next be seen in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Motor City was scripted by Chad St. John. The film will be Hughes’ first solo directorial effort, as he helmed his previous pics alongside brother Allen. Joel Silver is producing, and with the two leads set expect to hear more casting news soon.

Today is a good day. The Cardinals are World Series champions, trick r’ treaters will soon be out in full force, and I’ve got a night of horror films to look forward to. Once a year, my fiancée agrees to watch a few pics of the scary variety (or at least Halloween themed ones, i.e. Ernest Scared Stupid) with me in the hopes that I won’t ask her to partake in them again until the following Halloween weekend. Last year’s highlights included Drag Me to Hell and Trick r’ Treat. This year is shaping up to be Tobe Hooper-heavy with Poltergeist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre possibly making the cut. Like I said, today is a good day.

Before you dive into whatever Halloween festivities may await you, I hope you’ll take a few minutes and check out what this week’s “Top 5″ has to offer. THE RUM DIARY Review

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is widely considered to be the best adaptation of a Hunter S. Thompson book, but there can be no bigger love letter to the late author than The Rum Diary.  Written and directed by Bruce Robinson, The Rum Diary draws in Thompson’s language, ideology, and attitude. The film meanders through episodic misadventures and provides mere snapshots of supporting characters, but these weaknesses become strengths because they stay true to the subtext and tone of the story.  The only misstep is the lack of chemistry in the relationship between the two lead characters, but for the most part, the movie always knows where to stumble.

In The Rum Diary, adapted from the novel by Hunter S. Thompson, actress Amber Heard plays Chenault, the beautiful Connecticut-born fiancée of a shady businessman named Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). When journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) travels to Puerto Rico in 1960, to writer for a local newspaper, he meets and soon becomes obsessed with the sultry temptress, leaving her torn between financial stability and love.

At the film’s press day, Amber Heard spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about the torturous auditioning process they put her through for the role, why her interest in Hunter S. Thompson’s work was piqued when she was in ninth grade, what a dream it was to work with Johnny Depp, and how the stylized wardrobe really helped her get into character. She also talked about being able to relate to the indignation that can come with the expectations of looking a certain way, her desire to make the sexy girl roles into something more, and how excited she is to promote her next film, Syrup. New Clip and 19 New Images from THE RUM DIARY

FilmDistrict has released 19 new images and clips from The Rum Diary.  The film is based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson and centers on a journalist who makes his way down to Puerto Rico for a life of rum-soaked leisure but ends up with a moral conflict when he encounters a beautiful woman, and her shady businessman fiancée.  As you’ll see from the clip, it’s easy to get the words “astrologer” and “astronomer” confused when you’ve been drinking and see Amber Heard skinny-dipping.

First Trailer for THE RUM DIARY Starring Johnny Depp

The first trailer from writer/director Bruce Robinson’s The Rum Diary is now available online. Starring Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Richard Jenkins, and Giovanni Ribisi, the film is based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel of the same name and centers on journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) who moves to Puerto Rico where he eventually finds both his voice as a writer and his integrity. I know people have been waiting for this film to finally make it before their eyes for some time and, as far as first impressions go, the trailer doesn’t disappoint. Moviegoers may pay to see Depp revisit the mind of Thompson, but they’ll stay for Jenkins’ wig.

Amber Heard Interview THE PLAYBOY CLUB

The provocative new NBC drama The Playboy Club (premiering on September 19^th) takes place in Chicago in the early 1960′s, at a time and place that challenged the existing social mores and transformed American culture forever. The legendary and seductive club is filled with beautiful Bunnies, striving for their own independence and careers. When innocent new Bunny Maureen (Amber Heard) accidentally kills the patriarch of the Bianchi crime family, Nick Dalton (Eddie Cibrian) – the ultimate playboy and one of the city’s top attorneys – comes to her aid. At the Playboy Club, everyone has their own ambitions and agendas, and they are all hiding secrets.

During a recent interview to promote the show’s upcoming Fall premiere, actress Amber Heard talked about wearing her Bunny costume, that her character has her own share of secrets and skeletons in her closet, how the women that worked at the Playboy Club were empowered by their sexuality rather than being victimized by it, and how this was a time when there were different opportunities and expectations for women. DRIVE ANGRY Blu-ray Review

There is an art to camp.  It’s not enough to simply have the director wink to the audience and say “Yeah, we know this is terrible, but we’re having dumb fun so laugh god-dammit.“  Just because you’re making something trashy, doesn’t mean you have the license to give up quality filmmaking.  Director Patrick Lussier understands the difference between trashy filmmaking and trashy fun and that’s the reason his film Drive Angry is such a delight.  The script is unapologetically dumb, everything is cranked up to 11, and while everyone is clearly having a good time, no one is slacking off.  That’s the art to Drive Angry and it’s why it will likely build a devoted cult following in the years to come.

Exclusive: Director John Carpenter Talks THE WARD and His Thoughts on Hollywood Remaking His Films

The Ward, horror master John Carpenter’s first feature film in about 10 years, is a psychological thriller about a young woman locked in a mental institution in the 1960s. Unsure of who she is and what has happened to her, Kristen (Amber Heard) finds herself held against her will in a remote ward of a psychiatric hospital that is inhabited by four other equally disturbed young women. As Kristen quickly realizes that things are not what they seem, she learns that the hospital has dark secrets that will lead to a truth more horrifying than she ever could have imagined.

At the film’s press day, filmmaker John Carpenter did this exclusive interview with Collider, in which he talked about why he was burned out on the movie business, the appeal of working with a female ensemble, how much he loves collaborating with actors, the challenge of shooting such a self-contained story, being open to directing again, and how he feels about remakes of his previous films like They Live and Escape From New York. Amber Heard Talks THE WARD and NBC’s THE PLAYBOY CLUB

Actress Amber Heard wanted to be a part of The Ward because she loves the genre, loves the director (John Carpenter) and loved the script, making it the perfect combination. And, the added attention it gets for being Carpenter’s first feature film in about 10 years doesn’t hurt either. In the horror thriller, Heard plays a disturbed young woman named Kristen, who has no memory of her life before being admitted to a mysterious mental ward. Stuck with four other equally disturbed patients, Kristen begins to see strange things and hear frightening sounds, and quickly realizes that things are not as they seem. As she struggles to regain her freedom, she uncovers a truth more horrifying than she ever could have imagined.

At the film’s press day, Amber Heard talked about what makes John Carpenter the best at what he does, how she tries to make a character as real as possible, and the challenge of being a part of a story with a twist ending. She also talked about her upcoming NBC drama series The Playboy Club, about an innocent young Bunny named Maureen (Heard) who wants to take the world by storm, but accidentally kills one of the Windy City’s most powerful mafia bosses. Exclusive: Director Patrick Lussier Talks DRIVE ANGRY DVD/Blu-ray, HELLRAISER and HALLOWEEN 3

The outrageous action-adventure flick Drive Angry arrives on DVD and Blu-ray in both 2D and 3D on May 31^st, with bonus content the includes audio commentary with director Patrick Lussier and writer/actor Todd Farmer, deleted scenes, “Milton’s Mayhem,” through which viewers can track the trail of carnage throughout the film, and an “Access: Drive Angry” special feature (exclusive to the Blu-ray release).

During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Patrick Lussier talked about what fans will get to see on the DVD/Blu-ray, why he enjoys doing filmmaker commentaries, filming such epic car chases and fight sequences on a tight budget, and why bad-ass characters appeal to him. He also talked about how he and Todd Farmer are currently developing their take on Clive Barker’s Hellraiser for a remake, and said that they also hope to be able to do Halloween 3. Casting Call: Charlie Hunnam to Star in Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM; Amber Heard and Shiloh Fernandez Like SYRUP

We have a couple of casting stories to send your way tonight. First up, Charlie Hunnam (FX’s Sons of Anarchy) has landed the starring role in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Heat Vision reports that details regarding Hunnam’s role are under wraps but speculates that the turn may be as a pilot of a mecha (from the Japanese genre which involves humans manning “robotic constructs”) that “needs to climb back into the driver’s chair.” You may remember that the director decided to pursue Pacific Rim as his next project shortly after Universal failed to greenlight his R-rated take on At the Mountains of Madness. Back in March, we filled you in on some of the film’s potential plot elements and described the project as a monster-pic that takes place in “two worlds.” Hunnam’s casting reiterates that synopsis and describes Pacific Rim as “monster movie that sees powerful extraterrestrial aliens threaten the Earth’s existence, attacking cities and nations neighboring the Pacific Ocean.”

FilmDistrict to Release THE RUM DIARY Starring Johnny Depp on October 28th

We haven’t heard much about Bruce Robinson’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Rum Diary since we ran some images from the flick last June.  It was slightly worrisome that a movie that starred Johnny Depp, Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins, and Giovanni Ribisi was sitting on the shelf, but now that worry can be set aside.  FilmDistrict has announced that they have picked up the film and will release in the heart of awards season on October 28th.

The story centers on itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) who moves to Puerto Rico and eventually discovers his voice as a writer and his integrity.  Hit the jump for a full synopsis and the press release.  The only other films currently opening on October 28th are the horror flick Dibbuk Box and Andrew Niccol’s sci-fi thriller Now starring Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake.

Nicolas Cage and Amber Heard Exclusive Video Interview DRIVE ANGRY 3D; Updates on the PLAYBOY TV Show and GHOST RIDER 2

With Patrick Lussier’s (My Bloody Valentine 3D) revenge thriller Drive Angry 3D getting released this weekend, I was able to interview most of the cast earlier today.  Since we’ve been covering the film since its inception, most of you know it’s about a felon (Nicolas Cage) who is chasing the people who killed his daughter and kidnapped her baby. The vendetta/rescue spins out of control and the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies everywhere.  Along for the ride are Amber Heard, Billy Burke, David Morse and William Fichtner (who just about steals the movie as a character called “the accountant”).

During my interview with Cage and Heard, we talked about how the finished film compared to what they thought it would be when they signed on, working with the 3D cameras, the action scenes, and Heard told me about her Playboy TV pilot and Cage talked about what fans can look forward to in the Ghost Rider sequel called Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.  Hit the jump to watch:
