We all know him as the lovable bastard on Game of Thrones (who should have taken a roll in the snow with Ygritte (Rose Leslie)), but Kit Harington may soon lend his voice to a more villainous character. Harington is up for a role in DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2. The sequel to the 2010 hit features the return of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kristen Wiig, Craig Ferguson, T.J. Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Pablo Cruz started developing a Cesar Chavez biopic at their Canana Films nearly two years ago. Chavez is a legendary activist and Latino icon, revered for his efforts in the American labor movement, so his portrayer must be chosen with care. Two years later, Canana came up with an inspired choice: Michael Pena. I’ve noticed Pena most visibly in recent years creating distinct comic characters in lighter fare like Observe and Report or 30 Minutes or Less. But the actor made is name in heavier dramas like Crash and World Trade Center. Pena is versatile, and you need an actor who can tap into both sides of the craft to play an iconic figure who is a true leader of men.
Luna stepped behind the camera in 2010 to direct Abel, and has decided to make the biopic Chavez his second narrative feature. Luna cast Rosario Dawson as Dolores Huerta, Chavez’s partner in activism and co-founder of what eventually became the United Farm Workers. America Ferrera will play Chavez’s wife Helen. Hit the jump for more, including comments from Luna on the importance of Chavez’s message.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories regarding some indie films for you this evening. First up, Julia Stiles and America Ferrera have signed on to star in Todd Berger’s (Scenesters) comedy It’s a Disaster. Deadline reports that the film centers around four couples who meet up for Sunday brunch when they’re suddenly stranded in a house as the world may be coming to an end. Berger himself and fellow The Vacationeers comedy troupe-mates Kevin M. Brennan, Jeff Grace, Blaise Miller will also star. Berger wrote and will direct the pic, which starts filming this fall.
Additionally, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ivan Sergei (Crossing Jordan) are set to star in the film adaptation of the book and stageplay Jewtopia. The story centers on two childhood best friends who reunite as adults when one needs the other to help him pretend to be Jewish in order to woo a woman. Variety reports that Sergei will play the wannabe-Jew, while Hewitt will take on the role of the woman he’s in love with (she’s still appealing, right?) The tone is likened to Wedding Crashers and My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Bryan Fogel is directing from a cript he co-wrote with Sam Wolfson.

As we reported back in October, Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, and Kristen Wiig will reprise their roles in DreamWorks Animation’s sequel to How to Train Your Dragon. Empire now reports that Gerard Butler, who played Hiccup’s father, Stoick the Vast, will return as well. Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the first film, will go solo on the sequel. Also, in his recent interview with Steve, cinematographer Roger Deakins (True Grit) revealed that he would be consulting on the picture.
Not much is known about the new film other than it will be “epic” and go far beyond the tiny Viking island of Berk. The sequel to How to Train Your Dragon is set for release in 2013.

The Sundance Institute has announced its juries for this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Actor-writer-director Tim Blake Nelson (Leaves of Grass) will host the awards ceremony on January 29th.

Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, and Kristen Wiig will reprise their roles in DreamWorks Animation’s sequel to How to Train Your Dragon. Also returning is Toothless and other non-speaking-but-adorable dragons from the first film. Co-writer and co-director Dean DeBlois will fly solo on this one with Chris Sanders (who is busy on DWA’s 2012 caveman comedy The Croods) executive producing. Since How to Train Your Dragon was conceive as a “prequel-of-sorts” to Cressida Cowell’s book series, DeBlois plans to expand the world presented in the first film. Producer Bonnie Arnold explains, “There are nine books, and I feel like there are all sorts of elements that we could pull from.”
How to Train Your Dragon has been a box office smash for the studio ($489.6 million worldwide) and it’s one of my favorite films of the year. DreamWorks Animation has the 3D sequel on track for a 2013 release. Hit the jump for the press release.

Opening this weekend is DreamWorks animated movie How to Train Your Dragon. The film features the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kristen Wiig, and T.J. Miller. While DreamWorks animated movies are definitely hit or miss, this one is fantastic and absolutely worth paying to see in a movie theater. Also, the 3D is great and it’s currently at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes!
If you’ve seen the preview (click here to watch it), you know it’s about a teenage viking named Hiccup who doesn’t fit in with the rest of his tribe. Instead of wanting to kill dragons, he gets along with the creatures and wants to teach his tribe that killing isn’t the answer. Of course he needs to overcome a number of obstacles before his tribe will listen to him.
Again, How to Train Your Dragon is great. For a taste of the film, we’ve been given 5 clips and you can check them out after the jump:
