Happy Saturday, folks. I’m writing to you this week surrounded by a mountain of used facial tissue (that’s right, I’m not endorsing Kleenex on the site without some sort of kick back…wait, dang it). Cold season has officially set in which means I’m on a daily regimen of Dayquil (which I have no problem endorsing), warm tea, and self-pity. In case you’re a longtime reader of the “Top 5″ and you’re wondering to yourself, “Wasn’t Jason just complaining about the summer heat?”, the answer is yes. Out of the 52 yearly weeks, I’m generally not complaining about the weather for approximately 2 or 3 of them. It’s sad, I know.

In this week’s “Top 5″ you can find our video interviews with the cast of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, press conferences with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and more from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 junket, the red band trailer for Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s  21 Jump Street, a sit-down with the great Albert Brooks, and our coverage to date of this year’s American Film Market. Find a brief recap and link to each after the jump.

Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn delivered one of the year’s best films with Drive and the two re-teamed for the remake of Logan’s Run and the indie drama Only God Forgives.  Not much was known about Only God Forvies, and a previous synopsis and logline provided conflicting information, but Steve went to the American Film Market (AFM) earlier today and was able to pick up an official logline and synopsis.  Here’s the logline:

Only God Forgives is a fast, powerful, high-profile, action and violent revenge story with Ryan Gosling and Kristin Scott Thomas, never seen before, as a merciless and terrifying mafia godmother.

After the jump, you can read all of the previous synopsis and logline, and then read the new synopsis.  Only God Forgives also stars Luke Evans, and reteams Refn with his Bronson cinematographer Larry Smith and editor Matthew Newman.

First Promo Image and Synopsis for WARM BODIES Starring Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 2nd, 2011 at 10:22 am

Steve is over at the American Film Market where various studios are trying to sell the international rights to their upcoming films.  One of the films being sold is Jonathan Levine‘s zombie love story Warm Bodies, and Steve snapped a photo of the promo image.  The movie stars Nicholas Hoult as “R”, a zombie who falls in love with Julie (Teresa Palmer) after he eats her boyfriend’s brains and absorbs his memories.  I got to visit the set last week and while I’m embargoed like crazy, I can say the movie looks like an interesting spin on the genre.  Judging by this image, it looks like Summit Entertainment is going to play up the romance aspect (the movie also has horror and comedy) and making it look like zombie Twilight.  That’s a risky bet since I don’t think those audiences are going to cross-over, but it’s still early in the game and remember: this is trying to sell international studios, not the public.

Hit the jump to check out the promo image.  The film also stars Rob Corddry, John Malkovich, Analeigh Tipton, and Dave FrancoWarm Bodies opens August 10, 2012. [Update: We've updated the article with a full, comprehensive synopsis as well as a high resolution version of the image]

Our ongoing AFM (American Film Market) coverage continues as Steve grabbed a shot of the promo poster and synopsis for Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut Quartet.  It’s hard to believe that Hoffman has never officially helmed a film until now, but it’s exciting to see what he’ll come up with.  He’s also got a great cast with Maggie Smith, Albert Finney, and Tom Courtenay set to star.

Filming Already Underway on Movie Based on the Ordeal of the Trapped Chilean Miners

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 8th, 2010 at 9:16 am

chilean_miners_slice_01

The story of the trapped Chilean Miners is one that captivated the globe because it was a story that involved trapped miners, but with the feel-good twist of them not dying.  According to THR, shooting on a movie, entitled The 33 of San Jose, based on their ordeal began five days after the 33 miners emerged alive on October 13th.  Pre-production began three weeks before that and “writers J.J. Barrios and Jacobo Bergareche began penning the script with director Antonio Recio on a flight from Spain to Chile, just days after the news of the miners’ plight began to unfold around the globe.  It’s okay to capitalize that quickly on the story because it wasn’t a tragedy.  Of course, they didn’t know it wouldn’t turn out to be a tragedy when they started writing the script, but I admire their positive thinking when it comes to mining incidents.  Hit the jump for more on the project.

False Advertising: Poster for LOVE & DISTRUST “Starring” Robert Pattinson, Robert Downey Jr., and Sam Worthington

While Steve was busy snapping photos at the American Film Market (AFM), he grabbed a shot of a surprising poster for Love & Distrust.  The film boasted a star-studded cast featuring Robert Pattinson, Robert Downey Jr., Sam Worthington, Amy Adams, and James Franco.  Somehow, we had never reported on or even heard of this movie.  Of course, there was the standard note in the corner about “Credits Not Contractual”.  They may not be contractual, but they can certainly be misleading.  Hit the jump to check out the poster, and to learn why you’ve probably never heard of this movie and why buyers should beware.

First Poster and Synopsis for Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 3rd, 2010 at 1:29 pm

The-Tree-Of-Life-movie-poster-Terrence-Malick-slice

Steve is currently at the American Film Market (AFM) and he has nabbed a shot of the poster for Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life along with an image of a note from Malick that serves as kind of synopsis for the film. Previously, all we’ve known about the story was “an impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950’s chronicling the journey of the eldest son, Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn), through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years – trying to reconcile the complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt).”  This note is far more detailed and shouldn’t be read if you’re looking to avoid spoilers.

Hit the jump to check out the poster as well as the synopsis.  The Tree of Life opens May 27, 2011.

Word is coming out the American Film Market (AFM) that Scarlett Johansson will be playing a sexy alien in the sci-fi drama Under the Skin.  According to Heat Vision, Johansson plays “an alien on earth, disguised as the perfect aesthetic form of a mesmerizing woman. She scours remote highways and desolate scenery looking to use her greatest weapon to snare human prey — her voracious sexuality.”  Hit the jump for how writer-director Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast) isn’t just remaking Species or any other low-budget sci-fi B-movie.
