There were many lamentations when it looked like Paramount had passed on a purported sequel to Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. It turns out we had no idea what we were missing. Writer/director Adam McKay passed along the nature of the project,
“It was a musical. We were going to do four months on Broadway and then jump right into filming.”
Hit the jump for more comments from McKay.

During the last couple of days we’ve reported some heartbreaking news to comedy fans. First, there was the news that the sequel to Anchorman was apparently dead after Paramount had passed on the project due to some budget issues . Then, a few days later, came news via Ben Stiller’s twitter that Zoolander 2 was having some problems getting a green light over at Paramount due to some funding issues too.
However, Deadline reports that now turns out that both projects might still have some life to them after all. To find out why Paramount is hesitant about making both films and why there is still some hope that we might see the further adventures of Ron Burgundy and Derek Zoolander on the big screen soon hit the jump.

It looks like Derek Zoolander is so not hot right now. Even though Ben Stiller is ready to make the sequel happen, the green light (and paper) needs to come from the suits at Paramount. Similar to our report on the fate of our favorite chauvinistic anchorman, studio financing is not looking too good for the male model.
A recent update from Ben Stiller’s twitter (via DarkHorizons) revealed that the potential size of the budget seems to be the reason we might not be getting to see Derek challenge Hansel to another walk-off: “Ron Burgundy and Derek Zoolander looking to appear in sequels. Both men destitute, without means or intellect to fund their own comebacks.”
We all know how Hollywood works by now. This doesn’t mean the project is necessarily dead. Let’s hope that this is just a minor speed bump on the catwalk to Zoolander 2.

Today brings sad news for the many Anchorman fans out there. Remember how the cast and crew were mounting a charge to get a sequel ready for production by February 2011? While a noble effort, writer/director Adam McKay tweeted, “So bummed. Paramount basically passed on Anchorman 2. Even after we cut our budget down. We tried.”
Paramount’s decision really surprsises me. Not only was the original’s $85 million domestic gross very profitable in its theatrical run, I can only imagine how much it has made on DVD. And that’s before stars Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd bloomed into the box office draws they are today. It appears that even with the pay cuts the actors were reportedly willing to take, the filmmakers and the studio could not agree on a budget. Oh, well; at least McKay is completely free to take on The Boys, a comic adaptation he’s rumored to be up for. Likewise, the new McKay/Ferrell comedy The Other Guys should satiate our desire for absurdism this August.

Let’s face it: everyone in the world wants Anchorman 2 to happen. The ravenous fans want it. Writer/director Adam McKay wants it. Hell, the entire cast wants it. So why hasn’t it happened yet/isn’t happening now? In truth, everyone involved with the original is just too darn expensive today. But don’t despair yet, Burgundy enthusiasts. For the first time in six years, there seems to be a real hope the sequel will get off the ground.
McKay told MTV that if Paramount greenlights the project soon, production could begin as early as February 2011. He acknowledges that this timetable is a bit of a long shot, but fans of the original should see this as a real reason to feel optimistic about an Anchorman sequel. More on the details and why exactly Paramount has cold feet after the jump.
For the past year or so we’ve been hearing about that much-anticipated sequel to “Anchorman”. If you’ve been keeping track you know that the idea of revisiting Ron Burgundy and the gang comes up – religiously – every time one of the feature “Anchorman” players has a new movie coming out. The fact that reporters keep asking the “Anchorman” question is a testament to how much people love and revere the original.
Will Ferrell is currently making the rounds with “Land of the Lost”, so you know what that means! It is once again time to play “What’s up with Anchorman 2″? At least this month we have something a bit more substantial than Paul Rudd’s “hopefully” to report. According to Clint at Moviehole Ferrell told Australian radio hosts Jono and Dano that “everyone is meeting next week” to discuss their plans for “Anchorman 2″.
That “everyone” would include director Adam McKay as well as stars Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and, of course, Will Ferrell. The fact that all four of these insanely busy and important men are making time to get together face to face implies some real forward momentum for “Anchorman 2″. Finally. Of course, we still don’t know if there’s a script or even a concept for the sequel – the most likely scenario still has the News 4 crew lost in the 1980′s – but I’m just happy to hear that “Anchorman 2″ has not been sacrificed to the ‘busy schedules’ god that has doomed so many promising projects.
