In today’s opening paragraph I feel compelled to share this bit of wisdom with all of our readers: don’t ever attempt to renovate a house without ample professional help. Never. Just don’t do it. For the past three weeks I, the least handy person you may never meet, have been tasked with doing things that only Bob Vila and a few select others could be reasonably prepared for. It’s an all-consuming, seemingly neverending process that leaves you as the only movie blogger in the history of the civilized world who hasn’t yet seen The Avengers. Trust me, it’s a lonely place…
All warnings aside, in store for you in this week’s Top 5 is the first poster for the Anchorman sequel, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, pleasant news regarding the Blade Runner sequel, interviews with Cameron Diaz, Anna Kendrick and more for the rom-com What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the first trailer for producer Sam Raimi‘s The Possession, and a 4-minute “super preview” of The Amazing Spider-Man. Per usual, a brief recap and link to each falls after the jump.

Opening this weekend is director Kirk Jones’ What to Expect When You’re Expecting. The star-studded ensemble comedy tells the intertwining story of five couples that are having very different experiences while expecting babies. The cast also includes Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jennifer Lopez, Rodrigo Santoro, Joe Manganiello, Chace Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Brooklyn Decker, Thomas Lennon, and Wendy McLendon-Covey. For more on the film, here’s the trailer and a TV spot.
At the recent Los Angeles press day I was able to speak with Anna Kendrick twice. The first time was a video interview alongside Chace Crawford (click here if you missed it), and the second time was a more in depth interview with just her. During our wide ranging conversation we talked about what she collects, how she made seven movies last year, what it was like to film What to Expect When You’re Expecting with such a huge cast, upcoming films like Get a Job, End of Watch, and a lot more. Hit the jump for more.

At the recent Los Angeles press day I got to speak with most of the cast, and every day this week I’ll be posting a new interview. Up first is Chace Crawford and Anna Kendrick. During the very loose conversation we talked about making the film, karaoke songs, favorite Harry Potter movies, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch.

The first trailer for the cop-thriller End of Watch has gone online. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as a couple of uniformed officers who overstep their bounds when they decide to investigate a drug cartel and end up becoming targets. Writer-director David Ayer, who previously wrote Training Day, Dark Blue, S.W.A.T., and directed Street Kings, appears to be staying firmly in his comfort zone but now he’s gone the overused found-footage route. Steve was excited by what he saw when he visited the set, but this trailer has me waiting to be convinced.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo, and Natalie Martinez. End of Watch opens September 28th.

We’ve been provided with an exclusive new TV spot from What to Expect When You’re Expecting to share with our readers. The star-studded ensemble comedy tells the intertwining story of five couples that are having very different experiences while expecting babies. This new spot focuses on the different ways the soon-to-be fathers and mothers deal with impending parenthood, with a nice appearance by Rebel Wilson to liven things up.
Hit the jump to watch the spot. The film also stars Chris Rock, Rob Heubel, Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jennifer Lopez, Rodrigo Santoro, Joe Manganiello, Chace Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Brooklyn Decker, Thomas Lennon, and Wendy McLendon-Covey. What to Expect When You’re Expecting opens on May 12th.

Following on from the US trailer and poster out earlier this month, Focus Features have now released a new, longer international trailer for their stop-motion zombie horror, ParaNorman. When a small town is besieged by zombies, responsibility falls upon Norman, a local boy with the unique ability to speak to the dead, to save everyone from a centuries-old curse.
ParaNorman is Coraline writer Chris Butler‘s directorial debut, although Sam Fell (The Tale of Despereaux) is also co-directing. The film features the voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Casey Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, and Alex Borstein. The movie opens in 3D on August 17th. Hit the jump for the trailer.

A new trailer for the star-filled feature version of What to Expect When You’re Expecting has arrived. When a trailer begins with the voiceover, “Having a baby can be a real mother,” it can only go uphill. The movie is essentially Valentine’s Day with babies, as we see a bunch of famous people deal with the ups and downs of pregnancy. Chris Rock and Rob Heubel continue to be the highlights of the footage, and this trailer inexplicably gets rid of all the female characters halfway through. I’m no expert, but I’m fairly certain that ladies are a vital necessity for the production of little humans.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The cast also includes Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jennifer Lopez, Rodrigo Santoro, Joe Manganiello, Chace Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Brooklyn Decker, Thomas Lennon, and Wendy McLendon-Covey. What to Expect When You’re Expecting opens on May 12th.

Open Road Films will release David Ayer‘s cop drama End of Watch open September 28th. Per the press release, “the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as young Los Angeles police officers Taylor and Zavala as they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles.” The film also stars Anna Kendrick, Frank Grillo, and America Ferrera. When Steve visited the set last year, he said in his report, “End of Watch is going to look and feel completely different than any cop movie you’ve ever seen and I left excited by what I saw.”
At the box office, the September 28th release date puts End of Watch up against Rian Johnson‘s sci-fi action film Looper, the dramas Trouble with the Curve starring Clint Eastwood, and Won’t Back Down (formerly titled Still I Rise) starring Viola Davis and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Hit the jump for the press release, which contains the official synopsis.

The new US trailer for the stop-motion animated film ParaNorman has gone online. From Chris Butler (Coraline) and Sam Fell (The Tale of Despereaux) comes the story of Norman, a mysterious and misunderstood boy with the ability to see and talk to ghosts. This new trailer gives us a much better idea of what the plot of ParaNorman will actually be about. It also gives us a good look at some other characters in the film and the famous voices associated with them. While the previous trailer did a good job of piquing my interest, the new one actually made me look forward to the summer release. It hits on all the right notes of comedy and charisma.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster. The film features the voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Casey Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, and Alex Borstein. ParaNorman opens in 3D on August 17th.

Writer/director David Ayer’s cop drama End of Watch is about to wrap up a distribution deal with Open Road with a $2 million guaranteed minimum and $20 million toward prints and advertising. Open Road, the company behind The Grey, has committed to a 2000 screen run with a substantial deal coming in a bit under what the Liam Neeson survival epic garnered. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena and Anna Kendrick, End of Watch centers on two young police officers in the LAPD who patrol south central Los Angeles. Steve got to go on an exclusive set visit where he got the first two official images from the project. Hit the jump to check them out along with the synopsis for End of Watch.

How do you deal cinematically with cancer? That’s the question of Jonathan Levine’s 50/50, which was based on the experiences of its writer Will Reiser. It’s a tough subject matter because cancer touches so many lives and rarely offers happy endings. But 50/50 manages to be charming, and more about friendship and family in crisis than just pain. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars with Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anna Kendrick in this warm dramedy. Our review of 50/50 on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Lionsgate has released five new character posters for What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the ensemble comedy about “five couples whose intertwined lives are turned upside down by the challenges of impending parenthood.” It’s a great way to see pregnant versions of Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Cameron Diaz, Brooklyn Decker, and Anna Kendrick next to sassy taglines like, “If I knew I’d have a rack like this, I would’ve gotten knocked up years ago.” I kid, but I think there’s a chance this could be good. Chace Crawford, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock, Rodrigo Santoro, Ben Falcone, Joe Manganiello, and Rob Huebel also star. What to Expect When You’re Expecting opens on May 12, 2011. The posters are after the break.

Director Dylan Kidd (Roger Dodger) is attached to direct Get a Job for CBS Films, and he’s setting up a very nice cast. Miles Teller is in negotiations to star. Offers are out to Anna Kendrick and Bryan Cranston. Christopher Mintz-Plasse and SNL‘s Jay Pharaoh are also in talks; Kidd’s Rodger Dodger star Jesse Eisenberg is looking to take on a cameo in the comedy. According to Variety, the script by Kyle Pennekamp and Scott Turpel follows “a college graduate and his friends who have to lower their expectations about life as they enter the real world during a recession.” Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher (Extraordinary Measure) are producing.
After a critically acclaimed turn in Rabbit Hole and a scene-stealing supporting role in Footloose, Teller is poised for… well, an Eisenberg-level breakout. He has two films coming up in 2012—Project X and 21 and Over—that could connect with young audiences. Plus, acting opposite Kendrick and Cranston always looks good on a resume. I also hope this is the first of many times we see Pharaoh pop up outside of Saturday Night Live, since the sketch show doesn’t seem to know what to do with him.

An international trailer for the stop-motion animated film ParaNorman has gone online. The movie centers on a young boy named Norman (voiced by Let Me In‘s Kodi Smit-McPhee) who is able to see ghosts but it’s no big deal. It becomes a bigger deal when his small town comes under attack from the un-dead and he must save the day by stopping a centuries-old curse. The US teaser trailer is one of my favorite trailers of the year, and the international version is also good, but it’s more focused on introducing Norman and the plot. The movie still looks like a lot of fun and it will be one worth keeping an eye on in 2012.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also features the voices of Casey Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Leslie Mann, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, and Alex Borstein. ParaNorman opens in the US on August 17, 2012; it opens in the UK on September 14, 2012.
