Australian actors and directors are lining up to participate in the anthology film Sydney Unplugged. According to THR, Anthony LaPaglia, Toni Collette, Liev Schreiber, Russell Crowe, Alex Proyas, David Michôd, Ivan Sen, John Curran, Kieran Darcy-Smith, Rachel Ward, and Ray Lawrence will each helm a short film. Sydney Unplugged is along the lines of previous "famous-people-love-major-city" movies New York, I Love You and Paris, J'Taime.

Anthology movies are always a mixed bag, but when each short comes from a different director, it's at least exciting to see who will come up with the best of the bunch. I'm particularly excited to see what Michôd (who previously directed Animal Kingdom) comes up. Filming is set to begin in Sydney in the second half of 2012.

A couple of high-profile 2012 films just added some more great actors to their casts. First up, Showbiz411 reports that John Goodman is set to reunite with the Coen Brothers for a sixth time for their upcoming drama Inside Llewyn Davis. The story follows a young musician (played by Drive's Oscar Isaac) trying to make it in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene. Carey Mulligan will co-star and a couple days ago we learned that Justin Timberlake had been offered a role. There are currently no details on what role Goodman will play, but every time he teams up with the Coens, it works out pretty great. Goodman will next be seen in the awards-season contenders The Artist and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

Hit the jump for casting news on Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained.

Deadline reports that Anthony LaPaglia will play the leader of a group of greedy Australians in Quentin Tarantino's Southern-set Western, Django Unchained. The movie centers on an escaped slave-turned-bounty hunter Django (Jamie Foxx) who goes on a quest to rescue his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from the cruel plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). According to Deadline, LaPaglia and Joseph Gordon-Levitt "will play mean brothers" who cross paths with Django during the transport of a group of slaves recently purchased as fighters. Presumably, the slaves have been bought by the villainous Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) who forces them to fight for the public's amusement.

The ridiculously great cast also includes Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, M.C. Gainey, Dennis ...

We have a couple of quick casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Josh Lucas has joined the cast of Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar. According to Deadline, Lucas will play famous pilot/Nazi-symathizer/baby-misplacer Charles Lindbergh. The biopic will star Leonardo DiCaprio as FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover. The cast also includes Armie Hammer (The Social Network), Damon Herriman (Justified), Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl), and Dame Judi Dench. Eastwood is also reportedly considering Amy Adams and Naomi Watts for the role of Hoover's secretary now that Charlize Theron has passed on the flick. As we previously reported, Lucas is also rumored to be in the running to play Abraham Lincoln in Timur Bekmambetov's Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Hit the jump for casting news regarding Robert Connolley's adaptation of Arthur Miller's 1955 play A View from the Bridge.

Vera Farmiga and Mia Wasikowska have joined the cast of A View from the Bridge. The drama will also star Anthony LaPaglia, Sam Neill, and Sebastian Stan. Per Variety,
LaPaglia will play the role of Eddie in the 1950s Brooklyn-set pic, while Farmiga plays his wife, Beatrice, and Wasikowska plays their young niece Catherine, whom they have raised since childhood. When the arrival of Beatrice's cousins from Italy enchants young Catherine, Eddie is consumed by jealousy and obsession that ultimately ends in tragedy.
Moral of the story: don't invite your Italian cousins to hang out, at least I assume that's what Miller was going for when he wrote the play. Filming is expected to ...

While covering the panel for Batman: Under the Red Hood at Comic-Con, I stumbled upon the announcement that Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s highly praised All-Star Superman storyline would be made into a full-length animated feature. Now we have the full cast listing and the date you can expect to see the Eisner award-winning storyline brought to life: February 22, 2011. Among the talented cast assembled to voice the icons are James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as Superman, Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as Lois Lane, Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) as Lex Luthor, and Ed Asner (Up) as Perry White. As you can see, they have quite a cast for the film and having read the comic it’s based on after picking it up at the convention, I now understand why it received wild applause when it was announced. Hit the jump for my brief impressions and the full press release, including what to expect on the home video release in terms of special features.

There aren’t many times when you feel for Superman in the comic world; the guy is the Man of Steel after all, and lacks great villains outside of Doomsday, Brainiac, and Lex Luthor. However, Morrison makes us feel for Superman because he is slowly dying and he knows it. I had a few issues with the comic, as the dialog boxes were confusing at times and Bizzaro’s section was a chore to trudge through, but the overall narrative should find a nice home when animated. I loved ...

Acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder makes his animation debut with the fantasy adventure Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, which follows a young owl named Soren (voiced by Jim Sturgess), who is enthralled by his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors that once fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones.

Based on the beloved and popular books by Kathryn Lasky, Legend is a story that shows the importance of following one’s dreams, in order to make them real, and is brought to life by a stellar cast of actors voicing the owls, including Helen Mirren, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ryan Kwanten, David Wenham and Anthony LaPaglia.

During a press conference for the film, director Zack Snyder, executive producer Deborah Snyder and actor Jim Sturgess, who voices the heroic young Soren, talked about making this epic, visually stunning animated feature. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Question: Zack, was it a tricky balance between doing something that would keep your fans of 300 and Watchmen happy, and doing something that families and kids, who might have no idea who you are or what other films you’ve done, would enjoy?

Zack: I honestly didn’t think about it that way because the truth is that we started working on the movie about three years ago. Before we started shooting Watchmen, we were working on this movie, so it didn’t really fit in the ...

James Denton (Desperate Housewives) , Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), and Golden Globe-winner Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) will each be voicing characters in the upcoming Warner Premiere/DC Comics animated film adaptation of All-Star Superman. Written by Grant Morrison and drawn by the always great Frank Quitely, All-Star is a multiple award-winning DC mini-series (three Eisners, two Harvey, and three Eagle awards) that just happens to be one of my personal favorites as well. From Heat Vision, Denton will be voicing ol' Kal-El himself (Note: that's Superman) with Hendricks lending her pipes to Lois Lane and LaPaglia taking on the Man of Steel's number one foe, Lex Luthor. Also voicing characters in the film are Ed Asner as Perry White, Frances Conroy as 'Ma Kent, as well as Linda Cardellini (ER), Arnold Vosloo (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), and Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds).
The film is due to be released on DVD/Blu-ray in Spring 2011 with a PG-13 rating intact. Per usual, legendary artist Bruce Timm will be exec. producing the project. Finally, did I mention All-Star Superman is a personal favorite read of mine? Well, I'll try and put it another way: if you haven't read the 12-issue run and you have any interest whatsoever in Superman and/or great storytelling, do yourself a favor and check out All-Star Superman. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Warner Bros. has released a new poster for Zack Snyder’s animated 3D fantasy-adventure film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. Since we've covered the movie extensively the last few months, you probably know how excited I am to see the finished product as the few sequences I saw a week ago were incredible. The best way I can describe the movie is it's Lord of the Rings with Owls. This is a good thing. Also, as you probably noticed when you saw the incredible trailer, every frame looks like a painting come to life. I really haven't been this excited for an animated movie in a long time. Hit the jump to check out the poster, and click here to check out the eight character posters from a few weeks back.

The story is about a brave young owl named Soren and his quest to save all owlkind from the evil owls known as the “Pure Ones”. The film stars the voice talents of Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Ryan Kwanten, Anthony LaPaglia, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving and David Wenham.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole in 3D on September 24th.

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Zack Snyder's Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and I think it looks amazing. What's great about the movie is how every frame looks like a painting and I think this is going to be something special in 3D. What I also love about the trailer is how it looks like Zack Snyder took his style and vision and applied it perfectly to an animated film. Watch the trailer for yourself and tell me it doesn't look awesome.

Here's the official synopsis:

The film follows Soren, a young owl enthralled by his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones. While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd, scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father’s favor from his younger sibling. But Kludd’s jealousy has terrible consequences-causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones. Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls. Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians of Ga’Hoole-Soren’s only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms. The voice cast ...
