Most child actors fail to overcome the chronic, debilitating condition of becoming less and less child-like. Similarly, many siblings of more famous performers struggle to be taken even a little bit seriously. Fortunately, two shining exceptions to the rule are set to team up and show us that it’s not all marijuana-fuelled car crashes and uncomfortable SNL hoe-downs. Former pint-sized dynamo Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds) and current indie it-girl Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) were first linked to the drama Very Good Girls in May; Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) is now in talks to join them. The directorial debut of Naomi Foner (writer of Losing Isaiah) will spin the tale of two lifelong friends (Fanning and Olsen) who, following high-school graduation, vow to lose their virginity before the summer ends; naturally, both end up falling for Yelchin, which threatens to irreparably damage their friendship.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Star Trek 2 is on officially on the way. Paramount Pictures has announced that production has commenced on director J.J. Abrams’ follow-up to the fantastically awesome 2009 sci-fi pic Star Trek. We’ve got John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin all reprising their roles from the first film, and in an inspired bit of casting, Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is onboard as the film’s villain. Joining Cumberbatch in the Star Trek newbie circle are Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
Development on the sequel hasn’t been without its fair share of drama (Benicio Del Toro dropped out of the villain role weeks before filming began), but it’s reassuring to know that production has finally begun. The script was written by Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Damon Lindelof, and composer Michael Giacchino will indeed return to score the pic (huzzah!). The currently untitled sequel will be post-converted to 3D and is set for release on May 17th, 2013. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

With many of the major bases covered (Freddy, Michael, Jason), there’s not a lot of great and/or successful horror movies from the 1970’s and 1980’s left to be remade. Oh, there are still tons of films from that era of genre, but it seems that name recognition is a greater driving factor than the films themselves. So it’s no surprise they got around to remaking 1985’s Fright Night, a film that did for vampires what Scream did for slasher films by gently playing with the conventions while reinventing it for a new generation (albeit much more subtly).
And with True Blood, etc. there’s a lot of vampirism in modern culture, so on that level it’s a fitting time for the remake. Craig Gillespie directs the 2011 version, which takes the premise of the original in some interesting and not so interesting directions. Anton Yelchin stars as the boy next door who sees his neighbor (Colin Ferrell) as something of a threat, only for him to be a real life vampire. Imogene Poots, Toni Collette, David Tenant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse co-star. Our review of the 3-D Blu-ray follows after the jump.

[This is a re-print of my review from the 2011 Sundance Film Festival]
We should be able to relate to movies on an emotional level, but that connection shouldn’t be contingent solely on an individual’s personal experience. Like Crazy works, but only in a manipulative fashion that preys on the viewer’s nostalgia of young love. While lead actors Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones give solid performances, the love between their characters is left as vague as possible so that the viewer can project their own feelings onto the picture. If thoughts of your first love make your heart skip a beat, Like Crazy will likely send you reeling. If, however, you’re like me and aren’t impressed by watching other people deal with their relationship issues, Like Crazy will leave you cold.

Depression is a tricky subject for cinema, in that it takes the audience to dark places and is often not commercial. So – on the surface – the approach of Jodie Foster’s The Beaver is somewhat smart. When the main character – Walter Black (Mel Gibson) – is near suicidal, having him rediscover life through a hand puppet is not a bad starting point, as it can allow for fun to be made of a desperate situation. Alas, Foster – working from a script by Kyle Killen – never finds the humor in the situation that interesting. And even with Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence co-starring as people not going through depression as directly, even they get sucked into their own therapy sessions. Our review of The Beaver on Blu-ray after the jump.

There’s plenty to like about the original 1985 version of Fright Night: the performances from Chris Sarandon and Roddy McDowall, the great practical horror effects, and the thoughtful subtext about teens coming to grips with their burgeoning sexuality and the familiar inadequacies that come with it. The remake of Fright Night ditches almost all of these aspects but still manages to be an entertaining creature feature filled with excellent performances, plenty of humor, and some nice surprises as it tries update the film for a new audience.

In the re-imagining of Fright Night, teenager Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) learns that his new next door neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell), is really a vicious vampire, slaughtering people for their blood. Only problem is that no one, including his mother (Toni Collette) and girlfriend Amy (Imogen Poots), believe him. Unable to convince anyone of the imminent danger, Charley looks to popular Las Vegas illusionist and self-proclaimed vampire expert Peter Vincent (David Tennant) for help, before finally taking matters into his own hands.
At the film’s press day, co-stars Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (who plays Evil Ed) and Imogen Poots talked about updating the Fright Night story and characters for a Twilight world, the appeal of making a scary vampire film, hanging out with each other and bonding while shooting in Albuquerque, and the freedom that director Craig Gillespie embraces in the performances from his actors. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Last night, the Alamo Drafthouse held another one of its typically-awesome, film-geektastic events, this one in support of Craig Gillespie’s forthcoming Fright Night redux. Starring Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Tennant, and the ridiculously hot Imogen Poots, the 2011 model of Fright Night bears many similarities to Tom Holland’s 1985 Fright Night…and a few drastic differences. As it turns out, I managed to catch a screening of Fright Night ’85 just a few weeks ago, so the original was fresh on my mind. Was Gillespie’s film a worthy successor, or is Fright Night 2011 another useless remake? Find out after the jump, folks…

The first trailer for the indie romantic drama Like Crazy has been released. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year and stars Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones and Jennifer Lawrence. If you’re expecting a romantic comedy, then you’re in for a bit of a shock. The trailer is an uber-downer, and kind of crushing. It doesn’t give much away in terms of story, but it’s safe to say it won’t be anywhere near a “feel good movie of the year” list. Matt wasn’t a huge fan of the movie when he caught it at Sundance, but Steve liked it more. I like the actors involved and I’m intrigued enough by the trailer, I just may need to immediately follow the film up with a Disney movie of some sort to prevent a lapse into depression.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Like Crazy also stars Charlie Bewley and Alex Kingston. The film opens October 28th.
[Update: We've updated the article with a higher sound quality version of the trailer as well as the poster]

With Comic-Con set to begin in San Diego tomorrow night, tens of thousands of geeks (myself included) are about to travel to “Nerdapalooza” to watch footage from some of the biggest upcoming movies and TV shows and to interact with some of the best actors and directors on the planet. If you’re a fan of pop culture, comic books, TV shows, movies, Cosplay, or spending too much money on convention food, Comic-Con is an event you have to attend at least once in your life.
However, I know most of you reading this are not going to be able to attend. Luckily, I have a solution…at least for the movie Fright Night. On Friday, at noon pacific time, we’re going to be hosting a live video chat from Comic-Con with Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse & director Craig Gillespie. No matter where you live, you will have the chance to ask them questions and if you have a web cam, you can ask it on camera! More info after the jump:

A number of images from director Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake have been released. The film centers on a teenager (Anton Yelchin) whose neighbor (Colin Farrell) turns out to be a vampire. We’ve seen some of these images before, but a few of them are new. When Farrell’s in the right movie, he can be great, and the supporting cast isn’t too shabby. I’m interested to see the actor’s take on the vampire craze.
In addition to Farrell and Yelchin, Fright Night also stars Toni Collette, David Tennant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco and Imogen Poots. The film hits theaters in 3D on August 19th.

Four international character banners for Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake have gone online. The film stars Anton Yelchin as a suburban teenager who must combat his sinister new neighbor (Colin Farrell) because said neighbor is a murderous vampire. The posters feature corny taglines but I’ve heard good things about Marti Noxon’s script and I like the cast (which also includes David Tennant, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintze-Plasse, and Toni Collette) so I don’t really mind if the advertising is unimpressive.
Hit the jump to check out the posters. Fright Night opens in 3D on August 19th.

DreamWorks Pictures is bringing their 3D reimagining of Fright Night to Comic-Con this year in a big way. The studio announced today that in addition to a Hall H panel featuring stars Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Imogen Poots, as well as director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Marti Noxon, a special advance screening of the film will take place at the convention. If that’s not enough, they’re also throwing a “fan appreciation party,” which I can only assume involves people dressing up as vampires. Oh and punch. Lots of punch.
In celebration of the event, the studio is offering two fans the chance to win a VIP trip to San Diego for the convention. As a tie-in to their “Fright Night Feeding Frenzy” social media campaign, the fan that “spreads the frenzy the farthest” each week wins a prize. Hit the jump to read the full press release. Fright Night opens August 19th.

A new trailer for Fright Night has gone online. I’m not really sure what to expect from the film. Yes, it looks like there’s a lot more action than the original and while I would be slightly worried that the update may be trying too hard to be cool, I’ve heard positive word both on the script and reports from the set. Here’s hoping it all comes together.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, David Tennant, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Toni Collette. Fright Night opens in 3D on August 19th.

DreamWorks has released the first clip from the horror remake Fright Night. Colin Farrell is especially menacing in the clip as Jerry, the vampire who just moved in next door, as he describes to Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) the raw sexual appeal of his girlfriend (Imogen Poots) and mother (Toni Collette). The way he purrs “she’s ripe” really burrows under my skin in the most unsettling way. I’m excited to see Farrell chew his way through the scenery (fangs and all) when Fright Night hits theaters on August 19.
Christopher Mintz-Plasse and David Tennant also star in the 3D remake from director Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl). Watch the clip after the break.
