The biggest constant in Danny Boyle’s career is change. The 54-year-old director left a successful run in British theater and television to tackle a striking range of genres on film: horror, romantic comedy, family drama, thriller, dark comedy, among others. This weekend’s limited release of his real-life man vs. nature film, 127 Hours, marked the first time Boyle has let one actor fully drive a film. The venture paid off with a lead performance from James Franco that is getting rave reviews and the lion’s share of early buzz for the upcoming awards season.
This will also be the Oscar winner’s last directorial effort on film for some time. Boyle is the artistic director of the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony and will smooth that transition from film to live events with a return to theater as the director of a new adaptation of Frankenstein at the Royal National Theatre in England. He recently gave Collider a host of new details on the play, how 127 Hours was inspired by Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, revelations about his real-life subject Aron Ralston and why Slumdog Millionaire is far from his last production in India. With filming set to start very soon on his next flick, 127 Hours, Danny Boyle is faced with a unique challenge: How do you bring energy to the obviously static image of James Franco clinging to life all alone as trapped mountain climber Aron Ralston for much of the movie?
Well, as he revealed in the latest issue of Empire [via The Playlist] , he’s hired two cinematographers, Anthony Dod Mantle and Enrique Chediak, who respectively shot 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Here’s what Boyle said having two cinematographers brings to the project:
“One is from Northern Europe and the other is South American. They’ll bring different things to it. Like in a conventional film you’d have a comic character and a villain.”
Sounds like a fascinating approach to what should be an excellent movie. Hit the jump to read more of what Boyle had to say, and for a quick synopsis of the movie.

Production Weekly is reporting that James Franco will star as mountaineer Aron Ralston in Danny Boyle’s next film, 127 Hours. For those who don’t know, Ralston became one of the biggest bad-asses of all-time when he amputated his own lower arm with a dull knife in order to free himself after he was trapped by a boulder. Oh, and then he had to make his way back down the mountain without dying from blood loss or dehydration. Any film should be lucky to have Franco as its lead, but he may have to step up like he never has before if Boyle sticks to his plan to shoot the entire first hour of the film without dialogue.
PW also reported that filming is set to begin in March. This would line up with Variety’s initial report that they were aiming to release the film late this year.

After running through the striking slums of India, Danny Boyle will scale it back a bit for his next film and tell a simple story of a man climbing a mountain. The only problem is that man got himself caught under a boulder and had to amputate his own arm in order to survive. Luckily for Boyle and us, that’s a much more exciting story and it will be the Oscar-winning director’s next project, titled “127 Hours.” More after the jump, but be extremely careful on your way down.
