For a movie about a man who championed innovation, Joshua Michael Stern's Steve Jobs biopic, jOBS, is awfully safe and conventional. By the end of the movie, most viewers will know as much as they previously did about the tech innovator or possibly even less. Stern and screenwriter Matt Whiteley's depiction of Jobs makes one of the most influential figures in American business seem like nothing more like a savvy salesman who bullied people into following his vision. Ashton Kutcher's lead performance veers between convincing and distracting, and while Josh Gad impresses as Steve "Woz" Wozniak, jOBS is a bland biopic that never provides any insight into the man behind the Apple.

Playing by the standard rise-fall-redemption arc, jOBS begins by showing us Steve Jobs' (Kutcher) presentation of the first iPod in 2001 before cutting back to his college years and showing us his spiritual, free-thinking origins. Although we see him expanding his mind in India, we quickly meet the bossy, demanding Jobs who worked at Atari in 1976 before teaming up with tech guru Woz (Gad) and eventually launching Apple Computers. From there, we basically know where the story goes because jOBS feels like a dramatization of a Wikipedia page.

Sometimes Stern and Whiteley give us even less as they never explain how Macintosh was different than the Lisa computer, and why the former was deemed less worthy of consideration by Apple's board members. While jOBS gives us the major points in the Apple founder's life, it provides almost no depth ...

We've got a pair of first clips from the following movies to share today:

jOBS - Starring Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs and Josh Gad as Steve Wozniak, this first clip shows off the passionate vision and understated genius of the respective Apple co-creators. jOBS opens this April.
Bullet to the Head - Starring Sylvester Stallone as hitman Jimmy Bobo, this first action-packed clip reveals Bobo's bathroom brawl with Keegan (Jason Momoa), a precursor to the eventual ax fight. Walter Hill's Bullet to the Head opens February 1st.

Hit the jump to watch both clips.

Here's the first clip from jOBS (via ET):

Here's the synopsis for jOBS:
JOBS details the major moments and defining characters that influenced Steve Jobs on a daily basis from 1971 through 2001. JOBS plunges into the depths of his character, creating an intense dialogue-driven story that is as much a sweeping epic as it is an immensely personal portrait of Steve Jobs’ life.

The filmmakers strove for absolute authenticity in making the film, including shooting in the historic garage in Palo Alto, that served as the birthplace to Apple Inc. JOBS stars Ashton Kutcher, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, J.K. Simmons and Matthew Modine.
Check out the first clip from Bullet to the Head (via IGN):

Here’s the official synopsis for Bullet to the Head:
Sylvester Stallone stars as Jimmy Bobo, a career hitman who enters into an unlikely alliance with by-the-book detective Taylor Kwon to bring down the ruthless killer of their respective partners.

The upcoming Steve Jobs biopic jOBS is slated to premiere at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival, but it appears that the film has already secured distribution ahead of its public screening. Open Road Films announced today that it is partnering with Five Star Feature Films to distribute the film, which stars Ashton Kutcher as the legendary innovator. Directed by Joshua Michael Stern, the pic covers Jobs’ life from 1971 through 2000 and promises “an immensely personal portrait” of the Apple guru. Open Road has slated an April release date for the film, so fans won’t have to wait too long to see Kutcher’s portrayal. Sony has a competing Jobs biopic in the works from screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, but that project is still a ways from coming to fruition.

Hit the jump to read the press release. jOBS will serve as the closing film for the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, which runs from January 17 – 27th.

New images from the respective sets of Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street and Joshua Michael Stern's (Swing Vote) jOBS have found their way online. The Wolf images give us our first look at Leonardo DiCaprio in his turn as Jordan Belfort, a former financial rock star of sorts whose own memoir of the same name is the basis for the film. While we've already seen pics of Ashton Kutcher doing his best Steve Jobs impersonation while wearing a turtleneck and on LSD, today's images give us a better idea of how well he can pull of the "button-up, cardigan, sweater vest" look.
Check out the images after the jump. The Wolf of Wall Street is aiming for a 2013 release and also stars Matthew McConaughey, Jon Favreau, and Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead). jOBS co-stars Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Matthew Modine, Ahna O'Reilly, and Lukas Haas while also staring down an unspecified 2013 release.

Emboldened by the success of Valentine’s Day, Garry Marshall took another crack at the holiday-based all-star anthology in 2011, with similarly repulsive results. This time, though, movie-goers commendably ignored him (and hopefully quashed plans for Columbus Day or whatever the hell was coming next). Of course, it’s never a good idea to interpret the commercial failure of a terrible movie as anything more than an aberration. But in this case, there was an encouraging sense that the world had finally revolted against a sub-genre populated by cynical, bald-faced cash-grabs.

And indeed, New Year’s Eve is the romantic comedy distilled to its basest form; a film that trots out a dizzying array of A-listers and expects applause, while abandoning time-consuming chores like character, story and dialogue. Hit the jump for the full review.

Let’s dive into this cast of thousands. Hilary Swank is the VP in charge of getting the Times Square Ball to drop; Michelle Pfeiffer is a bored secretary trying to fulfill her list of resolutions before the clock strikes 12; Zac Efron is a bike courier desperate to get into a kickass Eve party; Jon Bon Jovi is a lovesick pop star; and then there’s Sofia Vergara, Sarah Jessica Parker, Abigail Breslin, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Katherine Heigl, etc., etc.

If you’re wondering how the filmmakers managed to develop so many characters within the confines of a single movie, they didn’t. Thus we’re treated to lines like “Mom, you've stopped trying. Okay? And you're being all clingy and mean. And it's ...

A few set photos from the Steve Jobs biopic jOBS have surfaced, giving us a look at Ashton Kutcher doing his best “Steve Jobs on acid” impression. The Apple visionary made no secret of his past experimentation with LSD, and it appears that director Joshua Michael Stern’s indie biopic has at least one scene in which Kutcher’s Jobs goes tripping in a field. Noah Wyle did a hell of a job portraying Jobs and tackling his fascination with LSD in the TV movie Pirates of Silicon Valley, so Kutcher has his work cut out for him.

Additionally, a couple more images of Angelina Jolie in character in Disney’s Maleficent have surfaced. The story centers on the Sleeping Beauty villain and “reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.” Yesterday some set photos landed online that gave us a look at Jolie performing some flying stunts, but this batch is much less death-defying. Hit the jump to check out the set photos from both jOBS and Maleficent.

Here are some recent casting additions at a glance with more information after the jump:

James Marsden (X-Men) will board Universal's 2 Guns, joining Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington.
James Woods (Casino) and Ron Eldard (Sleepers) join the Steve Jobs indie biopic jOBS, starring Ashton Kutcher.

Hit the jump for more on each picture.

Variety reports that Marsden has joined 2 Guns as a Naval Commander. The picture stars Wahlberg as a Navy SEAL opposite Washington as a DEA agent who work together, although neither knows that the other is undercover. After they steal millions from the CIA, they're double-crossed by their associates who will go to any length to retrieve the stolen cash. Edward James Olmos (Dexter) may star as the villain. Baltasar Kormakur (Contraband) directs from a Blake Masters (Brotherhood) script.

THR reports that Woods and Eldard are the latest addition to the Joshua Michael Stern-directed indie biopic about Steve Jobs. The Swing Vote director has been shooting in Los Angeles and Palo Alto since mid-June from a script by Matt Whiteley. Woods is set to play Jack Dudman, Jobs' former Dean of Students at Oregon's Reed College. Eldard will play Apple designer, Rod Holt. John Getz (The Social Network) and Lesley Ann Warren (Secretary) have also joined as Jobs' adoptive parents. jOBS [sic] already stars Kutcher in the title role along with Josh Gad (Love and Other Drugs) as Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak; Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket) as Apple CEO, John Sculley; and Dermot Mulroney (The Grey) as Mike Markkula, Apple's ...

Some easy on the eyes casting additions today. Here they are at a glance:

Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) is in talks to join Plush, a psychic story from director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight).

Hit the jump for more on each film.

Variety reports that Rock of Ages star Akerman will join Harry Potter alumni Alan Rickman and Rupert Grint in the indie picture, CBGB. Telling the story of the iconic New York music venue, CBGB features Rickman as club-owner, Hilly Kristal and Grint as Cheetah Chrome, guitarist for the "Dead Boys," a punk band who played a crucial role in CBGB's success. Also starring in the picture are recent additions Stana Katic (Castle) as Genya Ravan, lead singer of "Goldie & the Gingerbreads," and Joel David Moore (Avatar) as Joey Ramone, as THR reports. Other casting per THR is as follows:

Julian Acosta (Thin Red Line) as Johnny Ramone

Estelle Harris (Seinfeld) is Hilly’s mother, Bertha Kristal

Miller, who co-wrote CBGB with Jody Savin (Bottle Shock), is looking to film at Meddin Studios in Savannah, GA on June 25th, before moving to New York City.

Variety also reports that Browning is in negotiations to ...

Tonight's batch of set photos is connected by a That 70s Show theme. Not only are Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher featured, but both are again styled in the fashion of the 70s for their respective period piece:

Kutcher is playing Steve Jobs in the biopic Jobs: Get Inspired, which covers the Apple founder's life from 1971-2000.
Kunis stars alongside Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Marion Cotillard, and Zoe Saldana in Blood Ties, which centers two brothers involved in organized crime in 1970s Brooklyn

Hit the jump for the set photos and details on each project.

Jobs: Get Inspired
Josh Gad stars opposite Kutcher as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. So, you know, not the least annoying cast in the world. TMZ says this is Kutcher in full costume on the way to the set of Jobs. The script by Matt Whiteley chronicles Jobs' trajectory "from a wayward hippie to co-founder of Apple." Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) is directing.

For comparison, check out the image of a young Steve Jobs below.

Kutcher definitely has the look---now let's see if he can pull of the performance. Here's what producer Mark Hulme said about casting his lead:
“Since our film covers the early years of Apple, when Jobs was in his 20′s, we needed an actor who could carry not only the youthfulness of Jobs at the time but also the psychological complexity. Because of that, and Ashton’s physical similarities to Jobs, he’s perfect for our film… When Ashton read the script he was immediately attracted to ...

Earlier this month, we learned that Ashton Kutcher was poised to play the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in an indie biopic. The news made sense for some reasons (the physical similarities), but came as a bit of a surprise for other reasons (he’s Ashton Kutcher). At the time we didn’t really know much about the project beyond the fact that Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) is directing, and the film, going by the terrible working title Jobs: Get Inspired, will chronicle the innovator’s life “from a wayward hippie to co-founder of Apple.”

Now producer Mark Hulme has spilled a few details about the project, including how they feel about Sony’s competing Jobs biopic and why they think Kutcher is their man to play the lead role. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

During an interview with Neowin (via /Film), Hulme revealed that Jobs will primarily focus on the early years of Apple, “its founding and the up and down years: 1971-2000.” They’re pulling from a variety of sources for their research, and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, former Apple CEOs John Skully and Mike Markkula, and early Apple employee Daniel Kottke are all characters that will factor into the film. As for the casting of Kutcher, Hulme had this to say:
“Since our film covers the early years of Apple, when Jobs was in his 20's, we needed an actor who could carry not only the youthfulness of Jobs at the time but also the psychological complexity. ...

Given the rather odd casting choice, I feel the need to preface this story with the assertion that this is not an April Fools’ Day joke; this story is (as reported) 100% real. With that in mind, Mr. Ashton Kutcher is apparently readying to play the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in a biopic called Jobs. The notion of a Jobs-centric biopic isn’t exactly new, as Sony began developing such a film merely days after the innovator’s passing. Last we heard, The Social Network scribe Aaron Sorkin was considering penning the studio project, but Jobs is an entirely separate film. Hit the jump for more.

Per Variety, Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) is set to direct Jobs from a script by Matt Whiteley. The film will chronicle Jobs’ life “from a wayward hippie to co-founder of Apple.” Despite Kutcher’s fairly heavy comedic background, I have to admit he does look a great deal like Jobs. Nevertheless, appearance isn’t the highest item on my list when looking at the casting of a biopic, and Kutcher’s dramatic resume doesn’t exactly lead me to believe that he’ll knock the Jobs role out of the park.

Production on Jobs is slated to get underway in May, casting some doubt over the necessity of Sony’s project. I’d be thrilled to see a Sorkin-penned biopic of Jobs’ life, but the studio has to decide whether or not they want to be the second Jobs film out of the gate by a longshot. Though I don’t necessarily think Kutcher’s ...

It wasn't that long ago that Ashton Kutcher stepped in to replace Charlie Sheen for the ninth season of Two and a Half Men. But now that the season finale is scheduled to shoot next week, it's up in the air whether or not the show will return at all. Complications arose when the network offered two-year deals to both Kutcher and co-star Jon Cryer but did not include raises in the deal. If nothing else, this sticking point will prolong negotiations, while at worse it may be enough of an excuse for the actors to walk away altogether. Insiders report that Kutcher, Cryer and series creator Chuck Lorre would prefer to end the show after the next season, but could be convinced ($$$) to continue for another two years after that. Or perhaps they will come to the realization that about $700,000 an episode isn't bad for a day's work. Hit the jump for a further breakdown.

THR reports that this first deal from CBS and Warner Bros. is simply a starting point for what is likely to be a much lengthier negotiation. Kutcher, at least, is reportedly asking for upwards of $1 million an episode to continue his involvement in the highly rated sitcom. Two and a Half Men is rated higher this year than last, due mostly to Kutcher's inclusion, but the show reached a season low in February. If CBS, who is spearheading the negotiations, decides to stick with the two-year deal at current rates, they ...

New posters have been released for The Rum Diary and New Year's Eve. The former is kind of cute and almost makes the film look like a light comic spin on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which is appropriate considering that Hunter S. Thompson was the author of both novels. As for the New Year's Eve poster, it perfectly encapsulates the cynical, greedy reason for the movie's existence. The point isn't to convey a plot, but to jam as many stars into the film as possible in the hopes that you'll like one or two of them enough to see the movie. However, the stars you like will most likely be in the film for probably less than ten minutes total. If you think watching a star you like play a poorly defined character is worth a dollar a minute, then you like wasting money.

Hit the jump to check out the posters. The Rum Diary opens October 28th. New Year's Eve opens December 9th.

Here's the official synopsis for The Rum Diary:
Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, “The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with ...

A new trailer for Garry Marshall’s star-studded New Year’s Eve has been released. This trailer isn't much different from the first one in that it's basically a montage of all the pretty celebrities and their separate stories set to pop music, though this new look does include inappropriate Abigail Breslin flashing. If you enjoyed Marshall's Valentine's Day, then you probably don't need to be sold on the pseudo-sequel, and if the February-centered first film wasn't your thing then this New Year's Eve trailer is probably more than a little cringe-worthy. It looks like Seth Meyers may be the only saving grace for the brave boyfriends who are forced to soldier through this one.

The cast includes Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Hilary Swank, Zac Efron, Sienna Miller, Lea Michele, Sofia Vergara, Abigail Breslin, Til Schweiger, Seth Meyers, Jon Bon Jovi, Josh Duhamel, and Carla Gugino. New Year’s Eve opens on December 9th. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

The first trailer for Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve has been released. The follow-up to Valentine’s Day stars every actor ever in the history of acting, whom I can only assume will appear for five minutes of screen time each. The trailer is basically a montage of all the actors making their New Year’s preparations and yearning for somebody to love. Nothing groundbreaking, but if you were a fan of Valentine's Day it's a safe bet that this movie is probably your kind of thing.

The cast includes Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Hilary Swank, Zac Efron, Sienna Miller, Lea Michele, Sofia Vergara, Abigail Breslin, Til Schweiger, Seth Meyers, Jon Bon Jovi, Josh Duhamel, and Carla Gugino.

When we saw the trailers for Ivan Reitman's No Strings Attached, we all had the same basic reaction: "Oh, boy, Natalie Portman in a sex comedy!", a thought that was immediately followed by: "Oh, no, Ashton Kutcher." Yes, over the past decade, Kutcher has found more success as a "personality", camera salesman, and a reality TV producer than he seems to have found as an actor: despite a few middle-of-the-road successes at the box office, his filmography has left film geeks cold. Would No Strings Attached be the first film that breaks away from that sad truth? Or would No Strings Attached be more Killers-level crap? Read on for our full review after the jump to find out, folks....

Let's say you're like millions of Americans, and you just don't want to see Ashton Kutcher in your movies. It's understandable.

Kutcher was reasonably good on FOX's highly successful That 70's Show (y'know, if you're the type that enjoys sitcoms) and he enjoyed another lucrative run on MTV's Punk'd, but in the years since those series came and went, he's divided his time into three different ventures: producing (he does a fair amount of reality TV), being married to Demi Moore (which we can only assume is its own full-time job), and starring in films like Killers (which no one should ever be forced to see). Kutcher's films-- which also include Spread and Guess Who-- have run the gamut from "moderately successful" to "not successful", and so it would seem ...

Sources have confirmed to THR that Ashton Kutcher is putting the final touches on a deal to join the cast of the sitcom, filling the void left by Charlie Sheen after he decided acting sane was too much to ask of him for over $1 million per episode. The deal comes in the wake of Hugh Grant nearly joining the cast, only to pull out at the last minute over concerns about doing 20+ episodes of a TV series every year. No word on how Kutcher will be incorporated into the show, but one source lied that the storyline is “really funny.” I’m just baffled as to how this show is still a thing.
