Now that we’ve seen the Giants get the W and Madonna DJ the halftime show, it’s time to revisit the most important aspect of the Super Bowl: advertising. We saw a handful of movie trailers during the most watched television event of the year, with spots for everything from The Avengers to The Lorax to Battleship. I think it’s safe to say that The Avengers spot was far and away the best of the bunch; it was certainly the most anticipated. While many were wondering just how much of Joss Whedon’s all-star superhero pic we’d see, I think Marvel nailed the ad. It teased just enough to appease fans familiar with the comics, and highlighted the right aspects to appeal to the general moviegoing public (Iron Man and Captain America are gonna be in a movie together? Neato!). If you thought that trailer was cool, Marvel has released a full one-minute extended version of the spot with 100% more Hulk that we’ve included after the jump.
I was pleasantly surprised by Disney’s John Carter spot, but I’m still not convinced that the general audience has a handle on what the film’s about. Battleship still looks ridiculous, but selling it as the next Transformers is a wise business decision. After the jump we’ve compiled all the movie trailers that ran during the big gamel, including extended versions of the John Carter and The Avengers spots. Hit the jump to check ‘em out.

Continuing with this year’s tradition of releasing every commercial online before it airs during Sunday’s Super Bowl, a teaser for the Battleship TV spot has gone online. The spot is a bit different from the previous trailers we’ve seen in that it’s incredibly sci-fi-y. Realizing that they’ve made a movie out of a board game, Universal really seems to be playing up the Transformers comparisons. Essentially, aliens decide to attack Earth at sea. The whole “Battleship” aspect comes into play as a giant forcefield appears around a group of naval ships and the alien attackers, locking everyone into a confined area in which to fire away. I’m really hoping that the tone of Peter Berg’s flick is cheeky and fun, but I’m not entirely sure that’s what we’re getting.
Hit the jump to check out the teaser. You can read our Battleship editing room visit here. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Liam Neeson. Battleship opens May 18, 2012.

I want Battleship to be crazy, ridiculous, and (most importantly) fun. Basically the Transformers experience with a higher ceiling. I see that potential in the trailers we have seen so far, but there is no footage that cannot be made better by enthusiastic Japanese voiceover. A Japanese trailer for Battleship hit the web over the weekend with new footage. My optimism is not greater, but sustained at a high level.
Paramount is billing the board game adaptation as “an epic action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force.” Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Liam Neeson star in the Peter Berg-directed feature. Battleship opens May 18, 2012. Hit the jump to watch the new trailer, plus a director’s commentary on a previous trailer.

A new trailer for director Peter Berg‘s Battleship has landed online. Three thoughts: First off, there needs to be a comma between “Hasbro” and “the”. Second, Hasbro and Universal want this movie to be Transformers so badly and it’s utterly pathetic to watch them try. Third, for a movie that supposedly takes place at sea, there’s an awful lot of land. But watching this trailer, I’m beginning to understand why Universal is unloading all of their Hasbro properties as fast as possible.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with a new poster. Click here for Hunter’s visit to the edit bay and find out what he was told about the movie. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, and Liam Neeson. Battleship opens May 18, 2012.

A few months back Collider, along with a few other websites, was invited to visit the editing bay of Peter Berg’s upcoming mega-budget adaptation of Hasbro’s popular maritime board game Battleship (starring Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker and Alexander Skarsgard), which hits theaters next May. During our visit we got to see several scenes from the movie, learn about the characters, the settings and get a sense of the film’s scope and its interstellar enemies.
There has been a lot of discussion about Battleship, much of it openly negative, but until now there has been precious little detail on what the movie actually is, and what it isn’t. And what it is, is probably very different than you are thinking. Read on for the full story and the top 18 things you should know about Battleship.

Entertainment Tonight got a behind-the-scenes look at Peter Berg’s upcoming board game adaptation, Battleship. In this ET segment, you’ll get Rihanna being completely unconvincing as a navy officer (the character’s tattoos “dirty her up a bit”, and then I burst out laughing when she said “and of course, no make-up.”) plus a breakdown of how the main characters are related to one another. Helpfully glossed over: details of the whole alien invasion thing that pits battleships against spaceships. There’s probably nothing in this behind-the-scenes preview that’s going to change the opinion you had after seeing the trailer. You’ll just get a better idea of how expensive the movie is.
Hit the jump to check out the clip. The film also stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, and Liam Neeson. Battleship opens May 18, 2012.

The first trailer for Peter Berg’s Battleship hit the web last week, and today we have our first look at Rihanna in character in the film. The trailer was, um, less than warmly received, but I wasn’t necessarily offended by the trailer, I just don’t really see the point in having another “grounded in reality” alien invasion movie. A much interesting take could have been, I don’t know, naval battles between human-manned ships?
But enough about the trailer. The image shows Rihanna sporting her military getup and wielding a very big gun. Hit the jump to check it out for yourself. The film also stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard and Brooklyn Decker. Battleship opens May 18th, 2012.

Universal’s movie deal with Hasbro has been a serious burden for the story. Whether they make movies based on Hasbro products or not, the studio still has to pay out. However, that means Universal has to find a way to create stories based on Ouija, Stretch Armstrong, and other board games and toys. The luke-warm to derisive reaction to the Battleship trailer has to be making the company skittish to say the least. Deadline reports that Universal now has a few less properties to worry about as they’ve dropped Gore Verbinski’s Clue along with Ridley Scott’s Monopoly and an adaptation of Magic: The Gathering (and I had saved up so much mana!).
However, none of these projects are dead. Clue is moving forward with Verbinski still planning to direct with Hasbro producing and Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (the Flash Gordon remake) signed on to write the script. Verbinski’s take reportedly retains the murder-mystery of the game but expands it to a global stage. Please, please, please let someone say that the movie is Clue meets Risk as if the pieces got mixed up. Hit the jump for more details on Universal’s other Hasbro properties.

Following the TCA Press Tour panel for the NBC police drama Prime Suspect, Collider got the chance to speak with the upcoming series’ executive producer/director Peter Berg. Quite a busy man in Hollywood, he stressed how serious he is about doing a Friday Night Lights movie, the attention and curiosity that Battleship is getting, especially now that a trailer has been released, why he likes to work with actors he establishes a relationship with, and how nice it is to balance big studio films with smaller character-driven TV series. Here are the most important highlights from the interview:

This time last week, I was writing about how happy I was to be in San Diego, 2,000 miles away from the godless heat of the Midwest. Fast-forward to the present, and I’m happy to report that things back home have really cooled off with a heat index hovering right around a brisk 108 degrees Fahrenheit. At this rate, I should be able to check my mail without fear of sweating through my clothes any day now (baby steps, people, baby steps). Because I truly care about our readers, I’m hoping that wherever you’re reading this from is cool, comfortable, and free of any sort of sweating. Now, onto the important stuff…
In this week’s “Top 5″ installment we have an abundance of coverage for The Avengers, a video interview with the iconic Patrick Stewart, the first look at Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, the first trailer for director Peter Berg’s adaptation of Hasbro’s Battleship, and Matt’s cast interviews and review of Crazy, Stupid, Love.. Hit the jump for brief recaps and links to each.
The first trailer for Peter Berg’s Battleship has gone online. After watching this trailer, I can’t help but wonder if back in March the folks over at Universal were shaking their heads and thinking, “Man…I really wish Battleship had some out before Battle: Los Angeles.” Sure, some of the characters are different as you have the roguish Taylor Kitsch standing in for the battle-hardened Aaron Eckhart, but it all comes back to “We’re fightin’ the aliens fer realz.” The trailer’s two biggest selling points are Brooklyn Decker’s cleavage and the reveal of the aliens’ spaceship. I guess it’s a good thing that audiences haven’t already seen eight movies this year that revolve around Brooklyn Decker’s cleavage.

Universal Pictures has launched the official website for Peter Berg’s Battleship. I was surprised the film, which was rumored to have a $200 million budget, didn’t have some kind of presence at Comic-Con. The biggest star in the movie is Liam Neeson (it’s a supporting role) and the cast includes Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker. The movie’s lead is Taylor Kitsch who, while charming and charismatic, has never opened a movie this big (he’s also tasked with carrying Disney’s John Carter, which opens in March). But the biggest hurdle is that it’s based on the board game Battleship and people tend to see that and think “They’ll make a movie out of anything!” Oh, and the movie involves an armada fighting aliens. A panel wouldn’t have been the worst idea.
Now the official website has launched and it features a giant countdown clock that is counting down to 8:00 AM (PST) this Wednesday. What happens when it hits zero? My guess is a teaser trailer, but we’ll have to wait and see. Battleship opens May 18, 2012.

With the 2011 Licensing International Expo currently underway in Las Vegas, many promo posters have started hitting the net. Yesterday we posted the promo poster for The Avengers as well as the promo posters for The Amazing Spider-Man, Hotel Transylvania, and more. Continuing the barrage of advertising, we now have promo posters for The Hobbit, The Hunger Games, Battleship, The Three Stooges, The Lorax, 47 Ronin, The Croods, The Bourne Legacy, Rise of the Guardians, Stretch Armstrong, RIPD, Fast & Furious 6, and How to Train Your Dragon 2. It’s worth noting that the promo poster for Fast & Furious 6 says the film is due out in 2013, which isn’t too surprising. More intriguing is that the poster for How to Train Your Dragon 2 is simply titled “Dragons“.

At this weekend’s press day for the real-life indie drama The Bang Bang Club, about a group of four young combat photographers who risked their lives and used their camera lenses to show the brutality and violence associated with the first free elections in post-Apartheid South Africa in the early ‘90s, Collider got the opportunity to speak with actor Taylor Kitsch, best known for his work as Tim Riggins in the acclaimed television series Friday Night Lights, which ends its run this season, and for playing Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
While we will run the portion of the interview where he talked about playing the Pulitzer prize-winning photographer Kevin Carter closer to the film’s release date of April 22nd, we did want to post his updates on his other upcoming projects. During the interview, he talked about re-teaming with Peter Berg for the sci-fi/action flick Battleship, the crazy ride that his character goes on for the film, surprising audiences with the realness of the story, taking on the title role for John Carter of Mars and working opposite green screens for much of it, preparing to play pot grower Chon for Oliver Stone’s next feature Savages, and how proud he is of his work on Friday Night Lights, which he feels he owes so much of his career to now. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

James Cameron is an opinionated guy, and he’s got enough “Eff You” money to bathe in — Scrooge McDuck style. Most of his public declarations about the quality of film relate to 3D. For instance, The Hurt Locker “would have been better in 3D.” And Piranha 3D “cheapens the medium.”
But Cameron has other interests. The director spent the decade after Titanic filming underseas documentaries and produced the underwater cavern thriller Sanctum 3D (due February 4th). As such, he bristles at the idea of a film based on the board game Battleship:
“We have a story crisis. Now they want to make the Battleship game into a film. This is pure desperation.”
Hit the jump for Cameron’s elaboration.
