Many people (myself included) were counting director Alfonso Cuaron’s ambitious sci-fi pic Gravity as one of their most anticipated films of 2012. Well, now we’re all gonna have to wait a little longer, as Warner Bros. has lifted the film off of its November release date and set it for sometime in 2013. This is a big bummer, but the film most likely has some insane visual effects work to finish in post-production. Sandra Bullock stars as an astronaut stranded in space, and she’s apparently the only actor onscreen for the majority of the film. Though I’m sad to have to wait, I’m confident that the move was made in the film’s best interest. I’d rather have the Gravity Cuaron intends to release rather than a rushed version. It’s also entirely possible that Warner Bros. just felt that their slate was too crowded to premiered Gravity. In addition to The Hobbit, they have Argo, Gangster Squad, and The Great Gatsby all opening this fall.

Lots of casting news to catch up on, so here it is in brief:
Hit the jump for more.

Some quick casting news to pass your way: Jeremy Irons, last seen debauching it up on Showtime’s Tudors replacement The Borgias, is closing in on the role of the mysterious uncle in Richard LaGravenese’s adaptation of Beautiful Creatures, the first book in a critically lauded young adult fantasy series. Beautiful Creatures centres on two mystically charged teens (O’Connell and Englert) who are mysteriously drawn to one another despite never having met, and uncover some unsettling secrets about their families and the small southern town in which they live. Irons will join previously-cast leads Jack O’Connell (UK’s Skins) and newcomer Alice Englert, as well as Emmy Rossum, Emma Thompson, and Viola Davis.

Shameless star Emmy Rossum is in final negotiations to join the adaptation of the supernatural love story Beautiful Creatures. The story centers on two star-crossed teens who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town. Viola Davis and Emma Thompson are already signed on, and Variety reports that Rossum is poised to star as the young girl’s cousin who became a dark witch on her 16th birthday, thus turning the two girls into enemies. Beautiful Creatures is the first book in a three-book series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. I’m quite surprised by the pedigree of cast signed on thus far, so this must be more than your average Twlight knock-off. Richard LaGravenese (P.S. I Love You) is set to direct, and Warner Bros. is hoping Beautiful Creatures the beginning of a franchise.

Two-time Oscar-winner Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) is the latest to join Beautiful Creatures, a supernatural love story based on the first novel in a best-selling series. Thompson will join Academy Award-nominee Viola Davis (The Help), as well as Jack O’Connell (Eden Lake) and newcomer Alice Englert. Richard LaGravenese (P.S. I Love You) will direct the adaptation from the stories written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
In other casting news, Jenna Fischer (The Office) and Rita Wilson (Sleepless in Seattle) have joined the indie drama, Kiss Me, directed by Jeff Probst (“Survivor”). The coming-of-age tale follows a teen with scoliosis as she navigates adolescent relationships. Hit the jump for more on both projects.

It’s a good day to be a cast member of The Help. We’ve already reported a couple of high-profile casting stories regarding Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain, and now the third Oscar-nominated actress from The Help has booked not one, but two new gigs. Best Actress nominee Viola Davis is set as the lead in Beautiful Creatures, and will take a supporting role in Ender’s Game. Directed by Richard LaGravenese (P.S. I Love You), the film is an adaptation of the novel by Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia and centers on two star-crossed teens who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town. Davis will play a seer who looks after the boy and his father after the boy’s death. Beautiful Creatures is the first in a series of novels, and Warner Bros. is hoping that the film will kick off a franchise.
