Eddie Murphy Quitting Family Movies; Turning BEVERLY HILLS COP into TV Series; May Return to Stand-Up

It’s been easy to write off Eddie Murphy for about a decade.  There was a moment of hope when he turned in a strong dramatic performance in Dreamgirls, but then he went right back to making crappy family comedies.  Murphy now tells Rolling Stone that he’s done with family films, Beverly Hills Cop IV (which he might turn into a TV series), and his stand-up hiatus.

If you want to rekindle your hope that Murphy may return to form, hit the jump for some encouraging quotes.  Murphy will next be seen in Tower Heist (which looks less-than-encouraging) and he’ll be hosting the Oscars next year.

Brett Ratner is a very busy guy at the moment.  He’s currently preparing for the release of his latest directorial effort Tower Heist, which features an all-star cast that includes Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, and Alan Alda, and he’s also gearing up to produce the Academy Awards.  In addition, Ratner is juggling a number of other projects.  Steve recently got the chance to talk to Ratner and the conversation covered a wide range of topics.  In addition to talking about his plan for the Oscars and getting Eddie Murphy as a host, Ratner also spoke about Tarsem Singh’s Untitled Snow White Project which he’s producing, a comprehensive documentary about Woody Allen (which sounds awesome) that he’s also producing, a miniseries on Sidney Korshak, and much more including updates on Beverly Hills Cop 4 and Hong Kong Phooey.  Hit the jump to check out the full conversation.

BEVERLY HILLS COP and LE MANS Blu-ray Reviews

Paramount Catalog Titles! Beverly Hills Cop was the film that cemented Eddie Murphy’s status as a film star, and Le Mans put Steve McQueen in a car for much of its running time. These films have little in common, other than being very manly movies at the end of the day. Both are now on Blu-ray in the best transfers of their home video lives. Brett Ratner Still Gunning for a Fourth BEVERLY HILLS COP

Director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) and Eddie Murphy have been busy shooting Tower Heist outside the Trump International Hotel in Manhattan, which has provided Ratner countless opportunities to re-pester Murphy about suiting up in Axel Foley’s trademark blue jeans and Lions jacket for a fourth Beverly Hills Cop flick. The project has been in development limbo since 2008, and the most recent tidbit came in ’09 when it broke that a screenplay titled Dying Day from scribes Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (Wanted) would be retooled as an Axel Foley adventure. Nothing of note has surfaced since, most likely because Eddie Murphy is far less optimistic about a fourth go-around as Foley than Ratner is. Silly Edited-for-TV Lines from THE BIG LEBOWSKI, SCARFACE, PULP FICTION, GOODFELLAS, and More

“See what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?”  This is the type of incomprehensible sentence that results when Broadcast Standards and Practices decide that a particular piece of dialogue is too salty for television.  The above example is from the edited-for-TV version of The Big Lebowski, which is included in a clip alongside similar instances from Snakes on a Plane, The Usual Suspects, The Departed, Scarface, Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, Basic Instinct, There’s Something About Mary, Beverly Hills Cop, Casino, Goodfellas, and Wild Things.  Check it out after the jump; be warned of NSFW language.

Exclusive BEVERLY HILLS COP 4 News

Last night, Moviehole reported Rosewood and Taggart (Judge Reinhold and John Ashton) would be returning to the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise in the upcoming 4th film. If you don’t remember, John Ashton wasn’t in the third film, and a new character (Hector Elizondo) was written in to take his place. Moviehole also reported screenwriters Derek Haas and Michael Brandt’s spec script “Dying Day” was being used for the story and it was being reworked with the Beverly Hills Cop characters.

Unfortunately, their news was a bit premature, as I just spoke to a very trusted source and they told me it’s not clear who will be back on “Beverly Hills Cop 4″ as the studio is hiring a new writer and they are starting over.

While I would love to see a reunion of the original cast in “Beverly Hills Cop 4″, with the studio hiring a new writer, it’s clear this project is nowhere close to being in front of the camera.  More as we get it.
