I kinda figured that, with its teenage-centric plot, West Side Story would be the first classic Broadway musical to get the remake treatment. But it looks like South Pacific will beat it to the punch. Ileen Maisel (The Golden Compass) and Bob Balaban (Gosford Park) will adapt James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Tales of the South Pacific with the help of the Rodgers & Hammerstein songs from the 1947 stage hit. The show spawned 1958′s top-grossing film, and is currently in the midst of a Tony-winning Broadway revival. Hit the jump for details on the producers’ approach to the material.

Distributor Oscilloscope will release Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Allen Ginsberg film Howl in theaters and on Video-on-Demand on September 24th. The film, which stars James Franco as Ginsberg, centers on the poet’s 1957 public obscenity trial. The flick, which also stars David Strathairn, Jon Hamm, and Mary-Louise Parker, opened this year’s Sundance Film Festival to mixed reviews.

Shark Tale co-director Bibo Bergeron has nabbed Adam Goldberg, Jay Harrington, and Danny Huston to provide voices for his upcoming animated film A Monster in Paris for Europacorp, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The trio will join Bob Balaban, Catherine O’Hara, and French music pop singer Vanessa Paradis. The film, co-written by Bergeron and Stephane Kazandjian (Modern Love, Scalp), is described by THR below:
“The story, set in Paris in 1910, follows a shy movie projectionist (Harrington) and an inventor who team up with a cabaret star (Paradis), an eccentric scientist, and his monkey to save the city from a monster. The real villain, however, turns out to be the ruthless police chief (Huston).”
Hit the jump to find out why the tone that Bergeron is aiming for is being compared to King Kong and additional cast details.

Every Sundance, there are always a few movies everyone is talking about before the Festival. You know…the ones with buzz. One of the movies at this year’s Fest that people are talking about is Howl. The reason…it’s filled with an all star cast consisting of James Franco, Jon Hamm, David Strathairn, Treat Williams, Bob Balaban, Alessandro Nivola, Mary Louise Parker and Jeff Daniels. Also, you’ve got Franco playing a young Allen Ginsberg and as the synopsis says, “it’s a legal drama, a character study and an animated trip into the magic and madness of the modern world.”
With Sundance set to begin later this week, we’ve landed the first footage from Howl and it’s four clips from the film. If you’d like a sneak peak at one of the big films from this year’s Fest…take a look. Also, the film plays this Thursday night in Park City, so reviews will be everywhere on Friday.
