With E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) almost upon us, most of the major gaming studios are tying to get the jump on the event by throwing out trailers and images for their upcoming titles. Today, we received a press release regarding a new Star Trek game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC. The new game will take place in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek continuity and be a co-op experience where players take on the roles of Kirk and Spock. God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk penned the script in consultation with Star Trek and Star Trek 2 writers Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The game is being developed by Digital Extremes (Bioshock 2) and is set for release in summer 2012, which would coincide nicely with Trek 2 if that film still manages to hit its June 29, 2012 release date.

A film version of Orson Scott Card’s science fiction novel Ender’s Game has lingered in development hell for well over a decade now. Back in September, we told you that director Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) was going to try to tackle the beast and finally get a big screen version of Card’s novel going. Well now it looks like a couple of big names may be helping Hood out. Bob Orci recently tweeted that he and partner Alex Kurtzman (the screenwriting/producing duo behind Star Trek, Cowboys and Aliens, etc.) are working on the project. Orci had this to say:
“Ender’s Game! Us(K/O), Oddlot, and Gavin Hood taking his amazing script to the town! Who wants some?”
It sure sounds like Kurtzman, Orci and Hood are shopping the project around Hollywood, with the backing of production company Oddlot Entertainment. In the September report, it was said that Hood would be tweaking a screenplay written by Card himself. Could Kurtzman and Orci be working on the screenplay as well? At this point, I’d bet that they’re just onboard as producers, though nothing’s confirmed. With Kurtzman and Orci’s growing clout in town, they probably have a pretty good shot at finding financing. Here’s hoping for the best. Kurtzman is currently busy filming his directorial debut Welcome to People with Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks. The film is set to be released sometime in 2012.

If last night is any indication of its future viewership, then Fox’s Fringe should be in good shape going forward. Last night, J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Bob Orci’s sci-fi series debuted in its “death sentence” Friday time slot to a viewership almost identical to its previous Thursday numbers. Per InsideTV, the episode entitled “The Firefly” garnered 4.9 million viewers with 1.9 of those belonging to the preliminary adults 18-49 mold. In fact, Fox’s coupling of Fringe and Kitchen Nightmares made it the top network among the 18-49 demographic.
For the sake of comparison, if we take Fringe‘s 18-49 numbers from last night (1.9) and pit them against their latest numbers from the fall (1.7, according to TV by the Numbers), we see that the show not only held its own in the Friday death slot but it somehow managed to increase viewership. Of course, depending on your feelings toward the show, you’re either saying “way to hold strong” or “you’re just delaying the inevitable.” Regardless, right now the ghost of Joss Whedon’s late Firefly is smiling.

J.J. Abrams was at Monday night’s Fox All-Star Party for the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on behalf of his sophomore television Fringe. But, with so many things on his plate, like the final season of Lost, his new pilot for the NBC spy series Undercovers and the 2012 sequel for Star Trek, Abrams had plenty to talk about and was more than happy to do so.
During an informal chat, the director/writer/producer talked about possible fan reaction to the last season of Lost, how he’d like to set up Fringe with the same type of end-game, his preparation to direct the pilot for Undercovers and how there’s a release date for Star Trek 2, but no finished script yet. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
