Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell May Join Chris Evans in SNOW PIERCER

Just yesterday we brought you the news that Chris Evans (Captain America) was in talks to star in Snow Piercer, an indie drama by writer/director Bong Joon-ho (The Host) and producer Park Chan-wook (Oldboy). Now it looks like Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) and Jamie Bell (The Adventures of Tintin) are also poised to star alongside the first avenger. While we don’t yet know much about the roles they are in talks for, we do know the basic plot of Snow Piercer, which follows a group of train travelers learning to co-exist in a new ice age. Production is scheduled to start in March though a distributor is not yet in place. Snow Piercer will mark the domestic directorial debut for Bong Joon-ho, whose film The Host was South Korea’s highest grossing film of all time. Hit the jump for more on Swinton and Bell.

Though he’ll next be seen as Captain America in Marvel’s The Avengers, Chris Evans is eyeing a decidedly different role. Variety reports that the actor is in negotiations to star in Bong Joon-ho’s (The Host) Snow Piercer. The film is “set in a world covered in snow and ice” and follows a group of train travelers who struggle to co-exist. Oldboy director Park Chan-wook is producing, and Joon-ho will be making his domestic directorial debut with the drama. The director previously talked to Steve some time ago about the project, which he revealed takes place in a new ice age.

Joon-ho’s monster movie The Host became the highest grossing South Korean film of all time and spurned talk of a Hollywood remake, so his domestic debut is a pretty big deal. Chan-wook just made his own English-language debut with the horror drama Stoker starring Nicole Kidman, which recently wrapped filming. Evans is currently shooting the crime drama The Iceman. Production on Snow Piercer will get underway in March.

Jury Members Announced for 2011 Sundance Film Festival; Includes Matt Groening, Bong Joon-Ho, and Jason Reitman

The Sundance Institute has announced its juries for this year’s Sundance Film Festival.  There are plenty of notable names that will judging this year’s in-competition films including The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, as well as directors Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), Susanne Bier (In a Better World), Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry), Bong Joon-Ho (The Host), and Clark Gregg (Choke).  Actor-writer-director Tim Blake Nelson (Leaves of Grass) will host the awards ceremony on January 29th.

Rumor: J.J. Abrams Planning Collaboration with Bong Joon-ho, Director of THE HOST and MOTHER

The rumor mill suggests that J.J. Abrams is planning a collaboration with Korean director Bong Joon-ho, the creative mind behind the 2007 creature feature The Host and the recent drama Mother.  /Film hears that Abrams met extensively with Bong during a trip to South Korea last year, where the pair discussed a project that has so far been kept under wraps.  According to the source, Abrams will produce, Bong will direct, and Hollywood will serve as production headquarters.  It is not specified whether or not this would be Bong’s first English-language film, though it would be the first he made in the U.S.  More after the jump:

Domestic Trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s MOTHER

Magnolia has now released a domestic trailer for Mother.  If you’ve seen director Bong Joon-ho’s previous films (The Host, Memories of Murder) then you should already be looking forward to seeing this film in theaters when it finally gets it opens in limited release on March 13^th.  The film has been earning praise and winning awards while playing at film festivals around the world and if this trailer is any indication, we are in for another great film by this talented filmmaker.  In case you missed it, Steve got the chance to interview Bong Joon-ho while he was at the Toronto Film Festival last year with Mother and it’s an interview worth checking out, especially if you are a fan of Joon-ho’s work.

At this year’s Toronto Film Festival, I managed to interview a ton of great filmmakers.  Unfortunately, it’s taken a long time to get them all edited and online.  But I’m happy to report the last interview is ready to be watched and it’s with a great filmmaker from South Korea, Bong Joon-ho. In case you don’t recognize his name, he directed a fantastic monster movie called “The Host”, and he also directed “Memories of Murder” and one of the films in “Tokyo!”. He’s a filmmaker whose work I really love and if you haven’t seen his movies, I cannot recommend them enough.

While some interviews are rushed, the one I did with Bong Joon-ho was awesome. We talked for a very long time and covered tons of subjects (listed after the jump). If you’re a fan of this great filmmaker or just curious about his new movie “Mother”, hit the jump and watch what he had to say.

Anyway, while he was promoting his latest movie “Mother” (full interview online soon) I got some info on his next project “Snow Piercer”. According to the Joon-ho, he will be joining the ranks of filmmakers taking on the end of the world as his next film is based on a graphic novel named “Le Transperceneige” from France and it takes place in a new ice age. I know I’ve seen that hideous, Korean-stomping beast before…Oh, right.  2006′s acclaimed monster movie from Bong Joon-Ho, “The Host”.  You think I’d remember something like that.  Well, now the monster is back for more since they don’t really kick back and decide it’s time to retire.  The first image from the film has arrived online and since the film has become a cult sensation, I imagine you might want to check the image out after the jump.

Magnolia Pictures Set to Release Bong Joon-Ho’s MOTHER

Magnolia Pictures announced today that it has acquired North American rights to director Bong Joon-Ho’s “Mother”, which debuted at Cannes earlier this year to stellar reviews.  If you know who Bong Joon-Ho (“The Host”) is then this news should make you very happy because A) You should be anticipating this movie already and B) This means that you won’t have to order that South Korean import DVD anytime soon.  Now, if you don’t know who Bong Joon-Ho is then you are seriously missing out on one of the best directors who is working right now.  You can read more about “Mother” and why you should be excited for this one when you hit the jump.

TOKYO! DVD Review

Millions of people dwell in what is perhaps the world’s most high-tech, dense and modern metropolis.  “Tokyo!”, a collection of three independent films, treats us to a fantastic and surprising journey into the hearts and minds of compelling characters in the urban environment.

This production is captivating from the opening menu screen’s electric artificiality and high energy hum, setting the stage for the journey ahead.  The framework is established for themes of loneliness and the struggle to connect with humanity and society.  Although these themes may recur in urban societies globally, each segment in this collection is uniquely shaped by Japanese culture.  Each is distinctly Tokyo.
