Filming has begun on Fede Alvarez‘ remake of Sam Raimi‘s classic 1981 horror film The Evil Dead. Raimi is producing alongside original co-producer Rob Tapert and franchise star Bruce Campbell. Alvarez co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Savagues with Diablo Cody also doing some work on the script, which she calls “unbelievably violent.“ The remake will keep the “five co-eds head to a cabin in the woods, and bad things happen” of the original, but since Raimi’s The Evil Dead was one of the forefathers of the genre, it’s immune from the scathing satire of The Cabin in the Woods. The remake stars Jane Levy (Suburgatory) as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia, and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie. Like the original, the characters stumble upon the Book of the Dead, read from it, and are possessed until only one is remaining.

Sony Pictures has set the remake of Sam Raimi‘s 1981 horror film Evil Dead (or “The Evil Dead” if you want to be OCD about it) for April 12, 2013. The original movie centered on five twenty-somethings who headed up to stay in a cabin in the woods (the worst place anyone on Earth can ever be) only to be met with the horrors wrought forth from the Necronomicon (the Book of the Dead). The movie spawned the sequels Evil Dead II (considered to be the best in the franchise) and the goofy horror-action film Army of Darkness, all starring groovy chainsaw-wielding protagonist Ash (Bruce Campbell). Newcomer Fede Alvarez was brought on board to direct the remake after Raimi and producing partner Rob Tapert were impressed by his short film “Panic Attack”. Diablo Cody was then hired to revise Alvarez’ original script. Last month, Cody told Steve that the remake would be “unbelievably violent“.
No other movie is currently slated to open on April 12, 2013 [Box Office Mojo]

The Evil Dead remake is coming closer to a reality, as Sony Pictures is now set to distribute the pic. The original film’s director Sam Raimi is spearheading the update as a producer alongside Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert. Uruguay-native Fede Alvarez wrote and will direct the project, and Diablo Cody recently came aboard to do some script revisions. As she clarified to Steve, her work was far from an overhaul as she focused mainly on dialogue and character. Furthermore, if fans were worried the pic would be a watered-down version of the original Cody assured Steve that the script is “unbelievably violent”. Hit the jump for more.

Having grown up in the 1980’s, it feels like it was Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn that interested people in the first film more than vice versa. Sure Sam Raimi’s first film The Evil Dead was championed by Stephen King back when that meant something, and it did well enough and sold very well internationally. But it’s the second film that became the cult phenomenon. Bruce Campbell stars as Ash, the man who takes his girlfriend to a deserted haunted cabin, and then things turn spooky and silly. What turned the film into a cult favorite is how funny it becomes without ever losing intensity. Our review of the new Blu-ray of Evil Dead 2 follows after the jump.

Fan-favorite Bruce Campbell had pages of one-liners ready as he took the stage alongside Burn Notice creator, Matt Nix. Always charismatic (and dressed boldly in a white sport coat, pink shirt and green pants) Campbell was on hand to joke with the crowd and talk about Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe. Although the USA made-for-tv movie debuted on the network this past April, it’s now available on Blu-ray and DVD exclusively at Comic Con. While fans of Burn Notice will be happy to know that the series has been extended for season six, fans of Bruce Campbell (Sam Axe) will want to keep reading. Recently, Campbell tweeted about the progress of Evil Dead 4 but has said little else since then. He addressed the “elephant in the room” right off the bat. Hit the jump to see what he said.

It’s official: The Evil Dead remake is alive and well. Ghost House Pictures announced today that Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell are onboard to remake the horror classic. Following Campbell’s enthusiastic confirmation of the remake yesterday, we reported that Uraguay-native Fede Alvarez would be helming the film, and today’s press release confirms the director’s involvement. Apparently Raimi and Tapert were so impressed with Alvarez’s short film Panic Attack that they signed him to a blind deal, and shortly thereafter attached him to write and direct the Evil Dead remake. Fans of the Evil Dead franchise have been clamoring for a fourth film for decades. They’ve imagined Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash and they’ve taken comfort in the Evil Dead-style “spookablast” of Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell. But hard news of an actual sequel has been scarce. However, today offers the most promising news yet for Evil Dead 4. Dread Central reports that editor Bob Murawski (Army of Darkness) has gone to Detroit to begin work on the project, which will be “a small indie thing like the first two.” But when star Bruce Campbell was questioned by a fan on Twitter about the project’s veracity, he responded, “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”
I believe the correct response to that news is “Groovy.” Hit the jump for my thoughts on the sequel.

A new trailer for Pixar’s Cars 2 has been released. This marks the third full-length trailer because it’s not like this movie sells itself. The film follows Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) as he sets out to compete in the World Grand Prix, all while Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) gets wrapped up in some international espionage. This new trailer not only has a car falling into a vat of poop, but also has an awful song to go along with it. You can argue that Pixar needs this kind of widely-accessible film to give them the money to do riskier fare like Ratatouille, but Pixar made its name on not pandering to the lowest common denominator and still making crazy money. I fear for this film.
Hit the jump for the synopsis and trailer. Cars 2 also features the voice talent of Emily Mortimer, Jason Isaacs, Bruce Campbell, John Turturro, Thomas Kretschmann, and Michael Caine. It opens in 3D June 24th.

I’m a big fan of Burn Notice so when Collider was offered the chance to ask Bruce Campbell five questions about the show and its upcoming prequel movie Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe, I leaped at the opportunity. I asked Campbell if the events of Fall of Sam Axe will factor into the show’s fifth season, how much input he had into the script, whether he was surprised by any elements of Sam’s backstory, and how the movie will retain the vibe of the series. I also asked if we’ll be seeing the estranged Mrs. Axe this season.

Fans of the USA series Burn Notice and Bruce Campbell better buckle up, because you’re in for one hell of a ride. Today the cable network announced that series star Jeffrey Donovan (who plays Michael Westen) is set to direct the prequel movie that features Bruce Campbell’s character Sam Axe. The story is set in late 2005 after a faction of Colombian rebels makes trouble for the locally stationed military platoon, and Lieutenant Commander Sam Axe is sent down to advise. As the mission unfolds, Sam begins to uncover the dark secrets of the area, learning the truth about sacrifice, deception, and ultimately what’s worth fighting for.
Series creator Matt Nix is writing the script and will executive produce with Donovan and Campbell. For those worries about Donovan’s directing skills, he’s already directed one episode of Burn Notice, so he should be ready to go. Hit the jump for the official press release.

While it might not quite be Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, Bruce Campbell wants to make an all star horror movie in the vein of The Expendables. The Evil Dead actor spoke to the Los Angeles Times [via Screen Rant] recently and said that he hopes to make a sequel to My Name is Bruce called Bruce vs. Frankenstein and populate it with “so many horror movie stars that people can’t possibly not see the movie.”

USA announced today at their Comic-Con panel in Ballroom 20 that a Burn Notice prequel movie centered around Bruce Campbell is in the works. According to Variety, the telepic will follow “the last assignment of [Campbell's] character, Sam Axe, as a Navy SEAL before his retirement.” Filming is set to begin after season four (currently airing) wraps and before the start of season five on location in Latin America. Campbell has long been a geek icon due to his role as Ash in the Evil Dead series, so Comic-Con is truly the perfect venue for such an announcement.

If you’ve read my DVD reviews for season one and season two of USA’s Burn Notice, then you know that I’m kind of in love with the show. It has a formula and it (mostly) continues to work due to strong performances and sharp writing. What I like most about the Burn Notice is that it’s redefined my notion of what a spy thriller can be. It doesn’t negate a show like Chuck or the James Bond movies, but its matter-of-fact tone is a fresh take on the genre that you won’t find anywhere else.
Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) says in the show’s intro, “As long as you’re burned, you’re not going anywhere.” Hit the jump for my take on where Burn Notice went in its third season.

USA Network is feeling the burn. Although the fourth season of Burn Notice, the top-rated show on cable, has not yet finished production, President of Original Programming, Jeffrey Watchel, has re-upped the veteran series for seasons 5 and 6, each running at least 15 and 18 episodes, respectively. As Watchel told Variety, “Once Saturday Night Live makes fun of you, how can you not committ to extra seasons?” More after the jump:

Pixar has so long been the benchmark for quality re: computer generated animation, that when people come close it’s easy to laud. Especially after all those terrible DreamWorks films. Kung Fu Panda was an obvious step up for DreamWorks Animation, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs suggests that Pixar doesn’t have own the CGI playground. Bill Hader stars as Flint Lockwood, an inventor who creates a machine that turns the town’s weather into food. Anna Farris plays Sam Sparks, the newscaster who becomes his love interest.
