Though the wonderfully inventive series Pushing Daisies was cancelled way before its time, creator/executive producer Bryan Fuller is coming back to television with two new series.  The first is a reboot of The Munsters for NBC called Mockingbird Lane, and the second is a small screen incarnation of novelist Thomas Harris’ infamous character Hannibal.  Fuller recently revealed a few details regarding the latter, including sex changes for a couple characters and his intention to do a cable model on network television with 13-episode seasons.  Moreover, Fuller gave a brief update on his plans for a TV series reboot for Star Trek.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Eddie Izzard in Talks to Star in and Produce Bryan Fuller’s New MUNSTERS Series MOCKINGBIRD LANE

Though Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) is still very much working on getting Mockingbird Lane, the series reboot of The Munsters, off the ground for next season, the production of the pilot was pushed from spring to summer to allow production partners to focus on improving the show’s creative aspects. The delay might pay off as EW has learned that stellar British comedian and The Riches star Eddie Izzard is being lined up to take on the role of the old vampire and shape-shifting grandfather in the pilot from director Bryan Singer.

In addition, Izzard will also have a producers credit on the show, and having his comedic sensibilities on the program can only help. Izzard has been long overdue for some primetime exposure after a great turn on the sadly cancelled FX series The Riches, not to mention some great supporting turns in films like Ocean’s 12 and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. For a taste of his comedic stylings hit the jump for a great bit about James Bond’s gadgets.

Emma Watson to Star in HARRY POTTER Director David Yates’ YOUR VOICE IN MY HEAD; Tom Hanks and George Clooney Eyed for Male Lead

Though the Harry Potter franchise has come to an end, a reunion of sorts is already in the works. David Yates, who directed the last four Potter films, has chosen the drama Your Voice in My Head as his next project, and now he’s in discussions with Emma Watson to star. The film is based on the memoir by Emma Forrest and centers on “a young woman who attempts suicide before being saved by a New York-based psychiatrist who’s dying of cancer.” It’s some pretty heady stuff, and I commend Yates for choosing a small, intimate character drama as his follow-up to the massive Potter franchise. Hit the jump for more, including who Warner Bros. is looking at for the male lead and the possibility of Ralph Fiennes or Bryan Singer directing the studio’s Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game.

Matthew Vaughn to Direct X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Sequel; Simon Kinberg to Write the Script

Matthew Vaughn has signed on to direct a sequel to X-Men: First Class.  According to Deadline, Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand) will write the script and Bryan Singer will return to produce.  X-Men: First Class was terrific and I’m glad that Vaughn will return for the sequel.  I’m also excited to see what he’ll do with (hopefully) a bigger budget and more production time.  It’s a little surprising that Vaughn’s frequent collaborator Jane Goldman hasn’t signed on to pen the screenplay, but it’s possible that she’ll come on board later in the process.

Now we can let the speculation begin about what the sequel holds in store.  Vaughn said in May that he would like the second movie would open with the JFK assassination and Magneto controlling the “magic bullet”.  Indulging conspiracy theorists aside, I’m curious to see which new mutants will the fray.  If the movie is set in 1963, it’s probably too early to see Cyclops and Jean Grey kicking around Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

Warner Bros. Puts ARTHUR & LANCELOT on Hold; Pushes JACK THE GIANT KILLER 3D Back to 2013

Not long after Warner Bros. was reportedly getting cold feet with the swelling budget of David Dobkin’s Arthur & Lancelot, it looks like the studio has officially hit the pause button. The film, starring Kit Herington (Game of Thrones) and Joel Kinnaman (The Darkest Hour) in a reimagined Arthurian legend, was supposed to open March 15, 2013. Dobkin (The Wedding Crashers) reportedly informed cast and crew that it “wasn’t looking good,” although studio insiders confirm they’re trying to make the project work. Warner envisions the tone of Arthur & Lancelot to be in a similar vein to their Sherlock Holmes franchise, but will have to negotiate budget and scheduling difficulties. Herington, will return to Game of Thrones this spring while Kinnaman is expected to segue into the film shoot after wrapping on AMC’s The Killing. The project may move forward without one or both of the actors. Hit the jump for news regarding the delay of Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer 3D and Rock of Ages.

First Trailer and Poster for Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT KILLER

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 15th, 2011 at 4:24 pm

The first trailer for director Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer has gone online. Based on the classic tale, the fantasy pic tells the story of an ancient war that’s reignited when a young boy (Nicholas Hoult) unknowingly opens a gate between the world of the humans and the world of the giants. We don’t see much here, as it plays out very much like a teaser trailer, but I like the feel of it and it sure is nice to see Singer back doing big action set pieces. Ewan McGregor is the epitome of cool, and Hoult seems a fine choice to play the reluctant hero. Overall, I like the tone and the look of everything, but there’s not enough here to gauge whether or not Singer’s got himself a winner. I’m really looking forward to seeing those giants though.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Eleanor Thomas, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, and Bill Nighy. Jack the Giant Killer opens in 3D IMAX on June 15th, 2012.

Bryan Singer to Direct THE MUNSTERS Remake Pilot; Will Executive Produce the Series with Bryan Fuller

NBC is remaking The Munsters, and if you would like to get involved, there are a couple requirements.  First, your given name must be Bryan.  Second, your family name must be 6 letters and end in “er.”  Also, you must be super talented.  Bryan Fuller, the genius behind Pushing Daisies, was the first Bryan to board the project.  NBC ordered a pilot earlier this month after Fuller turned in the latest draft.  Bryan Singer (Valkyrie) has reportedly kept tabs on the project throughout the development process, and now will join his fellow Bryan on the one hour drama.  Singer will direct the pilot, and stay on as executive producer with Singer.  More on the project after the jump.

ANONYMOUS Screenwriter John Orloff to Pen Bryan Singer’s Adaptation of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

Screenwriter John Orloff (Anonymous) has been hired to write the screenplay for Bryan Singer’s new adaptation of Battlestar Galactica.  The new adaptation won’t have anything to do with the excellent TV reboot, so it will be a new take on mediocre 1970s TV series.  Both series focused on a war between men and sentient machines, but thematically and narratively they went in vastly different directions.  There are currently no details on what Singer plans to do with his movie.  The 2003 series took the premise of the original series and transformed it into a political drama with a mystical storyline woven in to the overarching plot.  Orloff has a diverse screenwriting background—his credits also include A Mighty Heart (good!) and Legend of the Guardians (not good!)—so there’s no clear indication of what he might bring to the script.

It’s tough for me to give this new Battlestar the benefit of the doubt since Singer and now Orloff have chosen to put themselves in the shadow of the recent TV series rather than create a new outer-space adventure movie from scratch. [THR]

Bryan Singer Says Death of EXCALIBUR Has Allowed Him to Focus on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

Because folks apparently can’t get enough of Arthurian legend (aside from the tanking of King Arthur and other sword-and-sorcery flicks), Warner Bros. was previously developing two movies set in the sub-genre.  There was Bryan Singer’s Excalibur and Guy Ritchie’s Excalibur, but then WB killed both projects in favor of David Dobkin’s Arthur & Lancelot, which is due to start filming in January for a March 15, 2013 release.  However, Bryan Singer isn’t too broken up about the loss of his Excalibur.  He has plenty of other projects in the pipeline and he says the death of Excalibur has allowed him to turn his attention to the feature film adaptation of Battlestar Galactica.

Hit the jump for what Singer had to say about why his Excalibur died and how he’ll be moving on to Battlestar Galactica.  Singer’s next film, Jack the Giant Killer (a blockbuster adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk), is set to open in 3D on June 15, 2012.

THE SUPERMAN MOTION PICTURE ANTHOLOGY 1978-2006 Blu-ray Review

The new Superman Blu-ray set has arrived with much fanfare and ballyhoo, and it certainly provides a handsome package. The big question, of course, is whether owners of previous sets should spend the extra money on this one or not. The studios’ perpetual habit of double-dipping has made buyers skeptical, and before they pony up $100 on a new collection – even one as good as this – they want to know if they’re getting anything new. In this case, the Blu-ray set perfectly duplicates the 2006 “tin case” DVD collection (which is no longer widely available). It has absolutely nothing on top of that, and if you already own that collection, this new one offers only improved sound and picture quality. Having said that, there is so much awesome stuff here – duplicated or no – that any fan worth his super salt absolutely needs it in his collection. Warner Bros. announced yesterday that production on Jack the Giant Killer is underway in London with Bryan Singer directing.  Not a big surprise, since we saw this photo from the set in April.  But the official production announcement revealed this synopsis:

Jack the Giant Killer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Nicholas Hoult stars in the title role, joined by Eleanor Thomas, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy, and Ewan McGregor.  Jack the Giant Killer is scheduled for release on June 15, 2012.  Read the full press release after the jump.

Warner Bros. has set the release dates for two of its 2012 summer tentpole flicks. First up, director Adam Shankman’s (Hairspray) star-studded adaptation of the musical Rock of Ages is scheduled for June 1st, 2012. The 1980’s rocker musical is set to star Tom Cruise, with a number of actors circling roles for the film including Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige, Anne Hathaway, Gwyneth Paltrow and Julianne Hough.

Director Bryan Singer’s epic fantasy Jack the Giant Killer is now slated for June 15th, 2012. The re-telling of the classic fairy tale stars Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, Ian McShane, Ewan McGregor and Elanor Tomlinson. Jack the Giant Killer centers on the titular Jack leading an expedition to the land of Giants to rescue a princess.

Ian McShane Joins JACK THE GIANT KILLER

Ian McShane has joined the cast of Jack the Giant Killer, singlehandedly upping the badass quotient 30% on this retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale.  Nicholas Hoults stars as a farm boy who “leads an expedition to free a princess (Eleanor Tomlinson) taken hostage by a giant, a situation that threatens the uneasy peace between humans and giants.”  According to Heat Vision, McShane will play King Brahmwell, the princess’ father who disapproves of his daughter’s poor choice in poor men.  Stanley Tucci will play the villain of the film, a scheming adviser to the king.  Ewan McGregor is set as the leader of the king’s guard.  Bill Nighy and John Kassir jointly portray the two-headed leader of the giants.  (Super cast, if you ask me.)

Bryan Singer (Valkyrie) will direct from a script by Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After).  Neal Moritz (The Green Hornet) and David Dobkin (Fred Claus) will produce.  McShane will next appear as Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which opens May 20.

Director Bryan Singer is putting the final casting pieces into place in his epic adventure story Jack the Giant Killer. Deadline reports that British actress Eleanor Tomlinson (Alice in Wonderland) has landed the female lead in the flick, opposite Nicholas Hoult who stars as the titular Jack. Tomlinson will play the princess who gets kidnapped by the giants, spurring Jack into action to rescue her from the land of the giants.

In addition to Hoult and Tomlinson, Ewan McGregor joined the cast last week, while Stanley Tucci is signed to star as the villain and Bill Nighy and John Kassir take on the role of the two-headed leader of the giants. Singer took his time in casting the lead roles in this film, testing a number of actors and actresses for the parts. Filming is set to begin this month in London.
