Viral Website and First Clip for BUTTER Starring Jennifer Garner [UPDATED]

It looked as thought the Weinstein Company would give Butter a limited Oscar-qualifying run in 2011 before opening the film wide in 2012, but that may no longer be the case.  The studio has just launched a viral website for the movie along with the first clip.  The clip features aspiring butter carving champion Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner) giving a speech for why her butter statue deserves to win.  You’ll see that Garner is going full-Palin in her performance, which is an odd choice since the script initially sets up the satire that Pickler is a Hillary Clinton-type figure: her husband (Ty Burrell) is the former butter carving champion and he cheats on her but she’s keeping her politicial aspirations high since because she believes winning at butter carving will help launch her campaign for governor.  As I said in my review, if Butter had simply picked a tone and stuck with it, the movie probably wouldn’t have been such a disappointing mess.

Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The film also stars Olivia Wilde, Ashley Greene, Rob Corddry, Alicia Silverstone, Yara Shahidi, Kristen Schaal, and Hugh Jackman.  No release date has been announced for Butter. [Update: We have removed the clip and the link to the site at the request of The Weinstein Company because the site and the clip aren't ready for public consumption yet.]

TIFF 2011: BUTTER Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: September 14th, 2011 at 9:45 pm

Jim Field Smith’s Butter could have been a scathing political satire.  It could have been a wicked dark comedy.  It could have even been a heartwarming family drama.  Instead, Butter tries to be all of these things and only manages to squeeze out occasional bits of humor and heart from any of them.  The film is endlessly frustrating, consistently disappointing, and one where every missed opportunity is a stinging reminder of how this could have been a great movie.

TIFF 2011: First Images from BUTTER and W.E. [Updated]

If TIFF approves my application, I’ll be making sure I get in to see the satire Butter.  The movie is set in the competitive world of butter carving and the story parodies the 2008 Democratic Primary.  Jennifer Garner plays an ambitious Midwestern woman whose philandering husband (Ty Burrell) previously won the title.  Garner’s character believes the title is her but then she’s challenged by a teenage African-American girl (Yara Shahidi). The outstanding cast also features Hugh Jackman, Olivia Wilde, Kristen Schaal, Rob Corddry, Alicia Silverstone, and Ashley Greene.  There’s also the first image from Madonna’s W.E. I don’t much care about that movie.

Hit the jump to check out the W.E. image .  The 2011 Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 8 – 18th. [We've removed the Butter image at the request of the studio]

In my article yesterday about the Venice Film Festival, I made some predictions on which films would make their world premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival and not Venice.  It turns out a few of my guesses were only the tip of the iceberg.  Moneyball, 50/50, and The Descendants are all going to premiere at TIFF.  But my lord, does Toronto have an incredible line-up this year.  I’m praying my application gets approved because when you hit the jump and check out this line-up, you’ll understand my agony if I’m stuck in Atlanta while these films are premiering.

Hit the jump for the line-up of Galas and Premieres for this year’s festival.  The 2011 Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 8th – 18th.

First Look at BUTTER Starring Jennifer Garner and Hugh Jackman

Entertainment Tonight has a great piece on the upcoming satire Butter.  I know “Entertainment Tonight” and “great piece” usually don’t go together, but ET doesn’t talk over this segment at all.  It’s just behind-the-scenes footage and the actors talking about the movie and their characters.  It’s simple, it works, and it makes me even more eager to see this movie, which is about a butter-carving competition that satirizes the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

The piece features cast members Jennifer Garner, Hugh Jackman, Olivia Wilde, Ty Burrell, Alicia Silverstone, and Ashley Greene.  The film has been described as Election meets Best in Show, and Jackman compares it to Little Miss Sunshine, To Die For, and Fargo.  Hit the jump to check out the piece.  Butter is due out next year and it’s one of my most-anticipated flicks of 2011.

Earlier today, we reported that Olivia Wilde and Alicia Silverstone had joined the cast of the political satire ButterVariety now reports that Hugh Jackman is also on board to co-star in the film which begins shooting this month.  The actor was scheduled to shoot the comedy Avon Man this month in Atlanta but Production Weekly reports [via The Playlist] that the offices for that film have been shut down.

The comedy, directed by Jim Field Smith (She’s Out of My League), is based on the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary except instead of running for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, it’s about a competition to win the title of local butter-carving champion.  Jennifer Garner plays an ambitious Midwestern woman whose filandering husband (Ty Burrell) previously won the title.  The main competitor of Garner’s character is a teenage African-American girl (Yara Shahidi).  The cast also includes Ashley Greene (Twilight) and Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine.  Jason Micallef’s script for the film landed on last year’s Black List, which is the list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood.  Jackman will play an old flame of Garner’s character.

We have two quick cuts of casting news for you today.  First up, Olivia Wilde (House) has joined the cast of the political satire Butter.  She takes the role that was originally offered to Kate Hudson so the film has definitely traded up (Hudson decided to do the Ginnifer Goodwin romcom Something Borrowed instead). According to Movieline, Wilde will play “a tattooed stripper with a Betty Page hairdo who’s also the mistress to a term-limited butter-carving champion (played by Modern Family‘s Ty Burrell).  The film is a satirical take on the 2008 Democratic Primary.  Jennifer Garner will play Burrell’s wife who wants the title of Butter-Carving Champion for herself but has to compete with a young African-American child (Yara Shahidi). Alicia Silverstone has also joined the cast and will play Shahidi’s adoptive mother.

Wilde has also signed on to star alongside Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens.  She’ll next be seen in theaters this December in Tron Legacy.  As for Silverstone, she recently re-teamed with her Clueless director Amy Heckerling for the vampire film, Vamps.

Ashley Greene’s Hotness to Melt BUTTER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 8th, 2010 at 9:38 pm

Ashley Greene (The Twilight Saga) has signed onto co-star in the satirical comedy Butter.  The film centers on an Iowa woman (played by Jennifer Garner) who attempts to win a butter-carving title formerly held by her husband (Ty Burrell), only to be thwarted by a young black girl (Yara Ahahidi).  According to Risky Business, Green will play a rebellious high school teenager named Kaitlen Pickler.  The film’s premise is intended to mirror the 2008 Presidential Primary battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Jim Field Smith (She’s Out of My League) will direct from a sceenplay by newcomer Jason Micallef.  The script landed near the top of last year’s Black List (list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood).

That’s really all there is to this story, but you can hit the jump for more pictures of Ashley Greene being hot.

Rob Corddry to Co-Star in Political Satire BUTTER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 6th, 2010 at 10:34 pm

rob_corddry_01.jpgRob Corddry will star alongside Jennifer Garner and Kate Hudson in the upcoming comedy Butter.  The script landed near the top of last year’s Black List (a list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood) and centers on an Iowa woman (Garner) who attempts to win a butter-carving title formerly held by her husband (Ty Burell), only to be thwarted by a young black girl (Yara Ahahidi).  The premise is intended to mirror the 2008 Presidential Primary battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Hot Tub Time Machine is worth seeing for Corddry alone and it’s good to see that he’s getting some bigger roles as a result.  Butter sounds like a great film and hopefully Corddry will get another chance to shine.  The actor will next be seen in the indie comedy Cedar Rapids alongside his former Daily Show co-star Ed Helms. Casting Call: Emma Stone in Talks for CRAZY, STUPID LOVE; Jim Carrey, Kate Hudson, and Jennifer Garner for BUTTER

Emma Stone image slice.jpg

Today, we have more casting news than you require.  First up, Vulture reports that Emma Stone (Zombieland) is in talks to join Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling in Crazy, Stupid Love.  Carrell plays a divorced cuckold who is trained in the ways of womanizing by a bachelor (Gosling).  Vulture wouldn’t specify who Stone would play, “because it would spoil the movie, but it’s a pivotal one that ties the whole film together.”

Exclusive GHOST RIDER 2 Update from Producer Mike De Luca; Sequel Title May Be GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 7th, 2010 at 8:39 pm

slice_ghost_rider_marvel_nicolas_cage_01.jpg

A few weeks ago I posted something called “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin“.  The reason for the title was we discussed so many different projects, it took seven days to post them all.  Thankfully, the interview went over extremely well, and now it’s time for a new “7 Days” column and this one is with producer Mike De Luca.

As you can tell by looking over his resume, De Luca has produced over 50 films and he’s got tons of projects in development. While I’ll be posting updates on Metal Gear Solid, Butter, Fright Night, Dracula Year Zero and tons of other things in the coming days, tonight is all about Ghost Rider 2.

For those who don’t know, the sequel to Ghost Rider is moving ahead full steam with a script by David Goyer.  According to De Luca, “We have an outline that David wrote that kind of adapts his 2001 script into today’s times with incorporating kind of an original idea of Nic’s.”

We talked about whether or not Mark Steven Johnson will be back directing and if Eva Mendes would return as Roxanne Simpson.  Oh, and he told me the tentative title is Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.  So much more after the jump:
