As I’ve said again and again,  Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon‘s The Cabin in the Woods is one of the best “horror” movies I’ve ever seen, and it’s easily one of my favorite films this year.  While many of you might love the horror genre, I find it repetitive and stale.  It seems like the genre is stuck in neutral, and no one is making any progress forward.  But that all changed after I saw Cabin in the Woods.  Without spoiling anything, let’s just say the film turns “horror” on its head, and I loved every second of it.  For more on the film, here’s Matt’s glowing review and interviews with Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford as well as Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams & Kristen Connolly.

Right before this year’s SXSW, I sat down with co-writer and director Drew Goddard for an extended video interview. Since we both didn’t want to spoil any of the twists and turns of the movie, our conversation is spoiler free.  During the wide ranging conversation we talked about making The Cabin in the Woods, the status of the Cloverfield sequel, Alias, Buffy, Angel, Lost, (he was a writer on all four series) Steven Spielberg‘s Robopocalypse (which he’s writing), his reaction to seeing The Avengers, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Six new posters for our Friday round-up. Here they are at a glance:

• American Reunion – In this fourth installment in the American Pie franchise, Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein and more meet up for their characters’ high school reunion.
• Cabin in the Woods – Written by Joss Whedon and written/directed by David Goddard, this movie, starring Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford, follows five friends camping at a remote cabin; bad things happen.
• Lockout – From Luc Besson, this sci-fi actioner follows Guy Pearce as he attempts to rescue Maggie Grace from an outer space, maximum security prison.

New Images from CABIN IN THE WOODS

Before Joss Whedon’s The Avengers hits theaters this summer, fans can get a look at his written effort in the horror/thriller, Cabin in the Woods. We’ve brought you some previous images as well as screened the entire movie for a select audience along with stars Kristen Connolly and Fran Kranz. Now, we’ve got a few new images for you to check out along with a trailer from Cabin in the Woods. The plot follows five friends who rent a cabin in the woods, but find more than they bargained for. Directed by Drew Goddard, Cabin in the Woods also stars Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford and opens April 13th. Boston Readers: Attend a Screening of THE CABIN IN THE WOODS Followed by Q&A with Stars Kristen Connolly and Fran Kranz

One of the most buzzed about films of the year doesn’t open for a few weeks, but we here at Collider are thrilled to be hosting a free screening of The Cabin in the Woods well in advance of the film’s wide release.  In tandem with Lionsgate, we’ll be hosting the advanced screening of the horror film on Monday, March 26th in Boston.  Furthermore, stars Kristen Connolly and Fran Kranz will be onhand to participate in a Q&A following the screening.  Buzz for The Cabin in the Woods has been nuts since it screened at SXSW, with our own Matt Goldberg calling it “one of the sharpest satires of the horror genre ever made.”  Director Drew Goddard and co-writer Joss Whedon have apparently crafted a horror film unlike any other, as they take the genre and turn it on its head.

I’ll use this week’s opening paragraph to offer a bit of foreshadowing. There’s a great chance that I’m going to be talking about 21 Jump Street here next week. Now, I’ll admit, I’ve never been one to laud the work of Channing Tatum. For the first time ever, though, I’m going into a film with high expectations for his performance. I think that everything I’ve seen of the film thus far looks terrific and Matt’s review and this NSFW extended trailer are just icing on the cake at this point.

SXSW 2012: THE CABIN IN THE WOODS Review

The Cabin in the Woods is one of the sharpest satires of the horror genre ever made.  Great satire can only come from intelligent, witty, and devious minds.  Director Drew Goddard and his co-writer Joss Whedon have those minds.  They have dissected not just the “cabin in the woods” sub-genre, but the entire horror genre, and most importantly, our enjoyment of it.  Rather than just point out the tired clichés we all know, Goddard and Whedon use the deconstruction as a starting point rather than a dull summation.   It is an exciting, exhilarating, and bloody means to a thoughtful, rewarding, and bloody end.

New Image from THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

After being delayed for over two years, The Cabin in the Woods will finally hit theaters this April.  The movie is director Drew Goddard and co-writer Joss Whedon‘s spin on the “Cabin in the Woods” horror sub-genre, and as we saw from the trailer, it’s a spin we didn’t expect when we first heard about the project.  A new image has gone online, and it’s more of the “Cabin” side of the plot as opposed to the other side (which I’ll keep quiet on this time since people whined about spoilers when I mentioned what was in the trailer).

South By Southwest 2012 Lineup Includes 21 JUMP STREET, CASA DE MI PADRE, THE RAID, and More

The full lineup for South By Southwest 2012 has been announced and for those of you not attending the festival, prepare to seethe with jealousy. The Austin, Texas festival will host screenings of the Will Ferrell Spanish-language comedy Casa de mi Padre, festival favorite The Raid, Bobcat Goldthwait’s God Bless America, and the world premiere of 21 Jump Street, which recently screened to press to overwhelmingly positive praise. Add these films to the previously announced festival opener Cabin in the Woods (from Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard), and I’m sufficiently envious of those making the trek to Austin.

Other highlights from the full lineup include the documentary The Imposter, Killer Joe, The Hunter, Lena Dunham’s Girls, and Kevin Macdonald’s doc Marley. After sitting on the shelf for two years due to MGM’s financial difficulties, director Drew Goddard and co-writer Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods finally found a distributor in Lionsgate this past April.  The first image from the film has finally gone online and shockingly it shows people in a cabin (cabin may or may not be in the woods).  Details on the plot have remained scarce since the project was first announced but Goddard and Whedon have indicated that the film will be their spin on the “Cabin in the Woods” horror sub-genre.

Lionsgate to Distribute Joss Whedon’s CABIN IN THE WOODS

After years of lonely dwelling in the MGM vault, director/co-writer Drew Goddard (who penned Cloverfield) and co-scribe Joss Whedon’s (The Avengers) horror flick Cabin in the Woods may finally see the light of the silver screen. According to Deadline, Lionsgate is completing a deal that would give the studio distribution rights for the long-completed film. Although a release date is unknown, the report goes out on a huge limb and lists the month of October as being particularly attractive for the studio that will, for the first time since 2004, not be releasing an installment in the Saw franchise during the month. As a result, I’d like to go ahead and throw the tagline “If It’s Halloween, It Must Be Cabin in the Woods” into the mix.

While I’m not privy to the details of the deal, I have to believe Cabin in the Woods is a low-risk investment given that it’s a completed work from proven creative forces, it already enjoys near cult status amongst fanboys (as evidenced by these fan-made posters), and features relative starpower with the likes of Chris Hemsworth and Richard Jenkins. Finally, news of Lionsgate’s acquisition leaves the Red Dawn remake as the only remaining MGM holdover still without distribution. That film also stars Chris Hemsworth alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Adrianne Palicki, and Josh Peck.

Horror fans and/or Joss Whedon fans alike are probably already aware of the scribe’s very-completed albeit yet-to-be-released horror flick, Cabin in the Woods. Starring Richard Jenkins, Chris Hemsworth (yeah, the “God of Thunder”), Jesse Williams, and Bradley Whitford, the film that Whedon co-wrote alongside director Drew Goddard (who penned Cloverfield) was originally set to be released by MGM in October of 2009 prior to being pushed back by the financially-strapped studio on several occasions (detailed in the slice above). At present, the finished film is currently kicking it in the studio vault, waiting for someone to pick up its distribution.

Unable to accept such wastefulness, a few ambitious fans have launched a campaign to help reignite interest in Cabin in the Woods. One of their first marketing tactics? Rephrasing the film’s earlier teaser posters in an attempt to stir the pot. Hit the jump to check out the posters and to find out how you can lend your support.

Sony Nears a Deal with MGM to Distribute BOND 23, RED DAWN, and CABIN IN THE WOODS

The coverage of the MGM financial woes has generally focused on Bond 23 and The Hobbit due to their Major Property status.  But that status meant that their eventuality was never really in doubt so much as the timing.  Sure enough, Warner Bros. will partner with MGM to distribute The Hobbit, and MGM is close to formalizing a similar deal with Sony Pictures that, yes, includes Bond 23.  However, I’m more interested in two different titles that are likely to be included in the Sony/MGM deal: Red Dawn and Cabin in the Woods.

Both films are in the can, but there is doubt either would ever see the light of day after prolonged delays.  I dislike that hypothetical.  The Red Dawn remake intrigues with the promise of cashing in on the cheese of the 1980s original with a notable young cast — Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights), Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right).  But the true loss would be Cabin in the Woods, the directorial debut of writer Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) which he co-wrote with his Buffy the Vampire Slayer boss Joss Whedon.  I’m not even much of a horror buff, but I need to see this one.  Hit the jump for more on the potential deal.
