As Marvel’s The Avengers opens in a few short months, it’s time to look forward to the studio’s development slate after the all-star superhero movie. We already know that Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 are the next to go into production, as they’ve (finally) attached a director and a new screenwriter to the former, and the latter has Shane Black in the director’s chair. For now, the release schedule looks like this:
While the untitled Marvel films have yet to be unveiled, we now might have an idea of what at least one of the films may be, as it looks like Captain America 2 may be going into production by the end of the year. Hit the jump for more.

With the release of Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger on Blu-ray, you know you can expect some fantastic special features. Marvel has posted one of seven deleted scenes that you’ll see on the Blu-ray. This one features an opening montage of Cap in one of the USO shows, followed by Dum Dum Dugan (Neal McDonough), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and the rest of the strike team as they face down advancing enemy troops. They’re in for a bit of a surprise when HYDRA unveils its secret weapon. Hit the jump to check it out.

For years now, we’ve been hearing about two Marvel movies that (almost) never saw the light of day: The Fantastic Four and Captain America, two ill-conceived and terribly shot pieces of cinematic crap whose collective awfulness was so legendary, it put anyone off the idea of making their own film based around these superheroes for decades after. While I’m still incapable of offering a decision on the former, I am proud to announce that—as of today—I am finally able to speak with authority about the latter. Read on for my Captain America (1990) review, after the jump (and prepare yourselves, people: you’re about to witness a vicious beating).

Chris Evans is making the rounds to promote his new legal thriller Puncture, but the next several years of interviews will be filled with Captain America questions for the young actor. Thankfully, Evans is candid and willing to field said questions. In a recent interview, Evans revealed what he’s heard about Marvel’s plans for the release of Captain America 2:
“They may wait until 2014 until they release the next Cap. Marvel has a lot of balls in the air, they aren’t going to cannibalize their films.”
Makes sense. Marvel already has two releases in summer 2013: Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013 and Thor 2 on July 26, 2013. Two releases is a nice meal; three is cannibalism. Marvel has staked out May 6, 2014 and June 27, 2014—Captain America 2 will likely take one of those. The other date could go to a spinoff for Hawkeye, Black Widow, S.H.I.E.L.D.; to new characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy or Doctor Strange; or maybe a sequel to The Avengers.

Puncture is a David and Goliath law drama based on the true story of a drug-addicted lawyer who took on a health supply corporation while battling his own personal demons. Mike Weiss (Chris Evans) is a talented young lawyer and functioning drug addict who meets Vicky (Vinessa Shaw), an ER nurse pricked by a needle contaminated with HIV while on the job. As Weiss digs deeper into the case with his longtime friend and partner, Paul Danziger (co-director Mark Kassen), they uncover a health care and pharmaceutical conspiracy and the mounting pressure of the case pushes their business and their friendship to the breaking point.
During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Chris Evans talked about how the range of this character was what attracted him to the role, the importance of showing both the brilliance of this guy and how vile he could be, and the experience of working with co-directors, one of whom was also his co-star. He also talked about his current work as Captain America in The Avengers, what it’s like to shoot on the streets of New York with all of the chaotic attention they get, and that there’s no official word yet on when Captain America 2 will start shooting. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Earlier today, Collider got the opportunity to speak with Chris Evans by phone, on behalf of his new drama Puncture (opening in theaters on September 23rd). The film centers on a talented young Houston lawyer and functioning drug addict (played by Evans) who decides to take on a case that reveals a health care and pharmaceutical conspiracy that could cost the lives of health care workers and nurses throughout the country.
While we’ll run that portion of the interview next week, we did want to let you know what he had to say about his current work as Captain America in The Avengers, what it’s like to shoot on the streets of New York with all of the chaotic attention they get, that there’s no official word yet on when Captain America 2 will start shooting, and how he currently has so much on his plate that he’s just trying to live moment-to-moment. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

The Blu-ray release of Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger is on the way, and included on the disc is another Marvel short film that fills the gaps between features. The first one we saw was The Consultant, which attempted to tie together the events of The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers with the use of Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson. This new short, called A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer bridges Iron Man 2 and Thor. It again stars Clark Gregg, and today we’ve got a sneak peek at the short. It looks to be a bit better than The Consultant (which isn’t saying much), and Gregg instantly ups the watchability of anything he’s in.
Hit the jump to watch the sneak peek. Captain America: The First Avenger is set to be released on Blu-ray and DVD on October 25th.

We now live in a time where there are so many different superhero movies released each year, that it’s completely warranted to make a list of the best and worst from the 12-month period. Yes, it’s a good time to be a nerd. Towards the top of many people’s 2011 list will be Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and we now know what the expect from the flick’s Blu-ray release. Along with an audio commentary from Johnston, we’ll be getting a number of featurettes that document everything from the technology behind Red Skull to Steve Rogers’ transformation from weakling to giant, 7 deleted scenes, and a trailer for The Avengers animated series. Hit the jump for the details, including a look at both Blu-ray covers.

There’s never quite been a movie constructed like The Avengers. No major mainstream movie (or at least none I can think of) has ever been both the sequel to and the cross over of three different franchises. Furthermore, this vision has not come from a single writer or director but rather from a studio who wants to translate their business model for comics on to the big screen. That model demands that characters and plotlines carry over between different stories and therefore the consumer must draw from multiple products in order to understand the larger narrative. However, each story contributing to the collaboration must also stand on its own.
But there’s been a cost to this ambition and that cost has been felt in the plotting of Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. We normally feel miffed if a film provides a presumptuous cliffhanger but these three films have gone one step further by gearing elements of their plot towards a final product. Has Marvel damaged three movies in order to build the biggest superhero movie of all-time? Hit the jump for more.

At Comic-Con, I had the great pleasure to sit down with Dominic Cooper one-on-one to talk about his upcoming film, The Devil’s Double. Although I haven’t seen the film myself, I have heard his portrayal is phenomenal. Because we were at Comic-Con, though, we started off talking about what he thinks about all of it and then jumped into the film. We really dug into his dueling roles as Latif Yahia and Uday Hussein and how it was shot. Along the way we also talked about his experience on Captain America: The First Avenger (he plays Howard Stark), the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and how it was to work with director Timur Bekmambetov. Marvel has released the final banner from its collection of exclusive Comic-Con concept art posters for The Avengers. On top of the art being pretty stellar, it’s really just nice to see the whole gang together on one sheet. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson, writer/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers hits theaters next summer on May 4th. Hit the jump to check out the final banner and each individual poster. This week, I’m bringing you the “Top 5″ from the lucky 13th floor of a hotel located in beautiful San Diego. I mention that only because on any typical weekend I would be writing from the suffocating heat of the Midwest and it’s just nice to remind myself of how happy I am to be able to walk outside without instantly sweating from every pore. But I digress…
In this week’s “Top 5″ installment, we have more Comic-Con coverage than you can shake a stick at (Do people still use that idiom? More importantly, is it actually an idiom?), trailers for The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man, the return of our video blog/podcast For Your Consideration, and an exclusive video interview with Captain America: The First Avenger‘s lovely star, Hayley Atwell. Hit the jump for brief recaps and links to each.

Lots of poster debuts today. Columbia released a simple, beautiful poster for Moneyball, which stands among my most anticipated movies of the fall. Relativity followed up on the new images from their movies that will appear at Comic-Con — Haywire, The Raven, Shark Night 3D, and Immortals — with the first posters for Haywire and The Raven. (Immortals and Shark Night were posterized in previous months.) Lastly, Marvel uploaded two pieces of concept art tied to The Avengers; the Iron Man poster lists the May 2012 release, the Captain America poster gives their state: “Assembled.”
See all the posters after the break.

With Captain America: The First Avenger arriving in theaters in a few days, I spent most of last weekend interviewing the cast and filmmakers. As I said in the intro to my Chris Evans and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely interviews, I absolutely loved this movie and think everyone involved did an amazing job bringing Captain America to life. Trust me, if you were nervous about Chris Evans as Cap, or that Marvel couldn’t make a period piece, you’re going to be blown away this weekend. Also, while I thought the love story in Thor was nonexistent, the relationship between Evans and Hayley Atwell (she plays Peggy Carter) felt real and believable. It was actually one of the best parts of the movie.
Anyhow, a few days ago I got to sit down with Atwell. We discussed the intense internet casting reports before production began, the immensity of the film and how everyone was trying to get photos from set, the romance between her character and Captain America, deleted scenes, the costumes, doing stunts in high heels, how she prepared for the film, and potential sequels. Hit the jump to watch.

Mondo has released all six of its Captain America: The First Avenger posters and, as you may expect, they’re very cool. Featuring two designs each from artists Olly Moss, Eric Tan, and Tyler Stout, the posters will go on sale at an undisclosed time so make sure you follow @MondoNews so you can have a shot at landing one before they sell out at lightning speed.
Hit the jump to check out the posters. Also, if you’re going to be attending Comic-Con this week, make sure you stop and check out the first ever Mondo booth in the main exhibition hall (booth #433). They’ll be releasing new posters, hosting artist signings, and other various things you’ll probably wish you had been a part of in hindsight.
