On the seventh day, Joss Whedon created The Avengers. Marvel has released a new infographic movie timeline that highlights specific super-heroic instances in time and places them in the context of The Avengers and the individual movies that built up to it. While The Avengers franchise no doubt revolves around Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, the new infographic has made him into a pseudo-Christ figure by demarcating the timeline with BIM (“Before Iron Man”) and AIM (“After Iron Man”). While it’s true that Iron Man had more movies than the rest of The Avengers (excluding 2003′s Hulk, which the timeline wisely forgets), I’d much rather see the scenes relative to one Special Agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) or even the beloved Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg). Hit the jump to check it out.

You can breathe a sigh of relief: The Avengers has finally hit theaters. This means that: A) You’ve probably seen it; B) You no longer need fear the spoilers; C) You only have a bit of post-opening weekend marketing to suffer through and D) You can look forward to the summer’s other big releases. As we look back on the last few months of The Avengers news, let us look further into the past to dig up some Public Service Announcements from yesteryear. You’d think the history of Marvel Comics and cartoons would be littered with PSAs, but I found them to be a bit on the thin side. Worry not, I’ve assembled the best Avengers PSAs of video and print that I could find. Hit the jump to check them out and click here to see all of our previous PSA postings.

And then there were two (technically three). A couple weeks ago, we reported that the frontrunners to direct Captain America 2 were F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), and television directors Anthony and Joseph Russo (Community). Today, Deadline reports that Gray has dropped out of the race to focus on helming the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton. Gray doesn’t officially have the Compton job, but Deadline says it’s likely he’ll get the gig. No offense to NWA fans, but I’m glad Gray is no longer in the running for Captain America 2. He was the least interesting of the frontrunners since he’s more of a journeyman director. While Nolfi has only directed one feature film, and the Russos have directed none, they’re wild cards, and I don’t know what to expect either way. [Correction: The Russos previously directed Welcome to Collinwood and You, Me & Dupree]
Captain America 2 is set for release on April 4, 2014. The movie will pick up where The Avengers leaves off.

Disney and Marvel Studios have scheduled Captain America 2 (tentative title) for April 4, 2014. As you may recall, the studios had previously scheduled the April 4th date for “Untitled Marvel 1″. Now that date belongs to Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) post-Avengers adventure. The movie is still looking for a director, and the current frontrunners are F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), and television directors Anthony and Joseph Russo (Community). It’s worth noting that with a 2014 release date, Captain America 2 probably won’t start shooting until late 2012 at the earliest.
Hit the jump for more including the sequel’s logline and a new image of Captain America in The Avengers. Captain America 2 currently has no competition on April 4, 2012.

We’re nearing the date on which we finally get to see The Avengers on the big screen, but Marvel is already busy making plans for their post-Avengers slate. Iron Man 3 begins production in the next few months, followed shortly by Thor 2, and now the studio has whittled down their director shortlist for Captain America 2 to just three names: F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job), George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), and television directors Anthony and Joseph Russo. Hit the jump for more on these lovely contestants in “Who Wants to Direct a Superhero Movie?”

We’re a little less than two months away from the release of The Avengers, and the impending premiere is becoming quite apparent. Just yesterday we brought you a bevy of information on the all-star superhero movie from writer-director Joss Whedon, and now AMC Theaters has announced a movie marathon event set to take place the day before The Avengers hits theaters. “The Ultimate Marvel Marathon” will unfold in select AMC theaters across the country and will feature back-to-back-to-back showings of Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and ultimately The Avengers.
The whole thing starts on May 3rd at 11:30am and runs all the way through the midnight showing of The Avengers. It’s quite an ambitious feat, and I’m not sure I’d be able to make it all the way through without feeling like a zombie during The Avengers, but I’m sure there’s plenty of you out there up for the task. It’d definitely be interesting to watch all the Marvel films in a row and spot how well the films do—or don’t—lead into one another (Bruce Banner’s been Ruffalo-ed!). Hit the jump to find out when advanced tickets go on sale.

Considering assembling your own team of superheroes before The Avengers comes out this May? While you might not have Tony Stark’s billions, you won’t need quite that much to purchase the Marvel superhero’s memorabilia at the upcoming Profiles in History auction. Costumes, props and even a Hydra tank are going on sale to the highest bidder on April 14th. Up for grabs are numerous pieces used in Captain America: The First Avenger, the Mark II suit of “autopsy” armor from Iron Man 2 and Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer. Hit the jump for more information on how you can get your hands on these props along with a of images of what you can expect to see on the auction block.

As Marvel’s The Avengers opens in a few short months, it’s time to look forward to the studio’s development slate after the all-star superhero movie. We already know that Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 are the next to go into production, as they’ve (finally) attached a director and a new screenwriter to the former, and the latter has Shane Black in the director’s chair. For now, the release schedule looks like this:
While the untitled Marvel films have yet to be unveiled, we now might have an idea of what at least one of the films may be, as it looks like Captain America 2 may be going into production by the end of the year. Hit the jump for more.

With the release of Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger on Blu-ray, you know you can expect some fantastic special features. Marvel has posted one of seven deleted scenes that you’ll see on the Blu-ray. This one features an opening montage of Cap in one of the USO shows, followed by Dum Dum Dugan (Neal McDonough), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and the rest of the strike team as they face down advancing enemy troops. They’re in for a bit of a surprise when HYDRA unveils its secret weapon. Hit the jump to check it out.

For years now, we’ve been hearing about two Marvel movies that (almost) never saw the light of day: The Fantastic Four and Captain America, two ill-conceived and terribly shot pieces of cinematic crap whose collective awfulness was so legendary, it put anyone off the idea of making their own film based around these superheroes for decades after. While I’m still incapable of offering a decision on the former, I am proud to announce that—as of today—I am finally able to speak with authority about the latter. Read on for my Captain America (1990) review, after the jump (and prepare yourselves, people: you’re about to witness a vicious beating).

Chris Evans is making the rounds to promote his new legal thriller Puncture, but the next several years of interviews will be filled with Captain America questions for the young actor. Thankfully, Evans is candid and willing to field said questions. In a recent interview, Evans revealed what he’s heard about Marvel’s plans for the release of Captain America 2:
“They may wait until 2014 until they release the next Cap. Marvel has a lot of balls in the air, they aren’t going to cannibalize their films.”
Makes sense. Marvel already has two releases in summer 2013: Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013 and Thor 2 on July 26, 2013. Two releases is a nice meal; three is cannibalism. Marvel has staked out May 6, 2014 and June 27, 2014—Captain America 2 will likely take one of those. The other date could go to a spinoff for Hawkeye, Black Widow, S.H.I.E.L.D.; to new characters like the Guardians of the Galaxy or Doctor Strange; or maybe a sequel to The Avengers.
Hit the jump for more from Evans on his multi-picture deal at Marvel and Joss Whedon’s influence on the new Captain America costume in The Avengers.

Puncture is a David and Goliath law drama based on the true story of a drug-addicted lawyer who took on a health supply corporation while battling his own personal demons. Mike Weiss (Chris Evans) is a talented young lawyer and functioning drug addict who meets Vicky (Vinessa Shaw), an ER nurse pricked by a needle contaminated with HIV while on the job. As Weiss digs deeper into the case with his longtime friend and partner, Paul Danziger (co-director Mark Kassen), they uncover a health care and pharmaceutical conspiracy and the mounting pressure of the case pushes their business and their friendship to the breaking point.
During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Chris Evans talked about how the range of this character was what attracted him to the role, the importance of showing both the brilliance of this guy and how vile he could be, and the experience of working with co-directors, one of whom was also his co-star. He also talked about his current work as Captain America in The Avengers, what it’s like to shoot on the streets of New York with all of the chaotic attention they get, and that there’s no official word yet on when Captain America 2 will start shooting. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Earlier today, Collider got the opportunity to speak with Chris Evans by phone, on behalf of his new drama Puncture (opening in theaters on September 23rd). The film centers on a talented young Houston lawyer and functioning drug addict (played by Evans) who decides to take on a case that reveals a health care and pharmaceutical conspiracy that could cost the lives of health care workers and nurses throughout the country.
While we’ll run that portion of the interview next week, we did want to let you know what he had to say about his current work as Captain America in The Avengers, what it’s like to shoot on the streets of New York with all of the chaotic attention they get, that there’s no official word yet on when Captain America 2 will start shooting, and how he currently has so much on his plate that he’s just trying to live moment-to-moment. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

The Blu-ray release of Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger is on the way, and included on the disc is another Marvel short film that fills the gaps between features. The first one we saw was The Consultant, which attempted to tie together the events of The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers with the use of Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson. This new short, called A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer bridges Iron Man 2 and Thor. It again stars Clark Gregg, and today we’ve got a sneak peek at the short. It looks to be a bit better than The Consultant (which isn’t saying much), and Gregg instantly ups the watchability of anything he’s in.
Hit the jump to watch the sneak peek. Captain America: The First Avenger is set to be released on Blu-ray and DVD on October 25th.

We now live in a time where there are so many different superhero movies released each year, that it’s completely warranted to make a list of the best and worst from the 12-month period. Yes, it’s a good time to be a nerd. Towards the top of many people’s 2011 list will be Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger, and we now know what the expect from the flick’s Blu-ray release. Along with an audio commentary from Johnston, we’ll be getting a number of featurettes that document everything from the technology behind Red Skull to Steve Rogers’ transformation from weakling to giant, 7 deleted scenes, and a trailer for The Avengers animated series. Hit the jump for the details, including a look at both Blu-ray covers.
