
With plenty of buzz and praise all over the place for David O. Russell’s boxing drama The Fighter, there’s no better time for FX to premiere their new boxing-centric drama series Lights Out. But while Mickey Ward had to struggle with opponents in the ring and his own invasive family while trying to break out of the ambition-killing town holding him back, Patrick “Lights” Leary (Holt McCallany) is a retired boxer and trying to do everything he can to stop from getting back in the ring. For a series focusing on a boxer, there’s not a whole lot of boxing to be seen in every episode, but that doesn’t mean this series doesn’t pack some punches to deliver yet another great series on FX. Though the fall TV season is going into full force this week, there’s still shows on the horizon that won’t be showing up for a view months. Enter FX’s new drama series Lights Out starring Holy McCallany as an aging former heavyweight boxing champion as he looks to find himself and support his family without getting back into the ring. The first promo for the series, which starts in January 2011, has just showed up online and it definitely looks like more solid programming from FX. Kevin Alejandro of the star-crossed cop drama Southland will soon be pulling doubles. Alejandro has just secured a regular role on HBO’s hit show True Blood as Jesus, “a Latino orderly who is taking care of Ruby Jean Reynolds (Alfre Woodard) at her care facility and becomes involved with her son, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis).” Since TNT has not yet officially decided to produce a second season of Southland, Alejandro will be able to work on True Blood.
