Poised for Valentine’s Day, the Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum love story The Vow opens this weekend. The pair play young newlyweds who are fiercely in love until a car accident leaves McAdams’ character with such severe memory loss that she cannot remember her husband. While her husband tries to make her fall in love with him all over again, she must decide if she wants her old life back. Based off a true story, the film is absorbing and hits deeply on a variety of emotions. With an excellent supporting cast—Scott Speedman, Sam Neill, and in particular Jessica Lange, the film is an engaging and satisfying love story, and also one that deals with the intricacies of family dynamics. Also, McAdams has a way of injecting believability into all her roles, and she was great in this.
At the film’s press junket, I sat down with the charming duo where we discussed how they got involved in the project, if they met the real life couple, and their favorite dating stories. Hit the jump to watch.

A French trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation has been released. It plays like a mash-up of the first domestic trailer for the film and the recent Super Bowl spot, with some new footage mixed in. I continue to be impressed by what we’re seeing from Retaliation; it just looks like a really, really fun movie. The pic seems to be more of a franchise reboot than a direct sequel to the first G.I. Joe, and the lack of Channing Tatum suggests we’re getting an almost entirely new cast headed up by Dwayne Johnson. The new trailer retains the “Seven Nation Army” remix, and a few bits of humor are sprinkled throughout for good measure.

Seeing as it’s already February and that little furry rodent has predicted six more weeks of winter, we thought we’d take a look ahead to some March movie releases. Coincidentally, three big March movies have recently released new posters. First up is Disney’s March 9th release, John Carter, starring Taylor Kitsch as a Civil War vet transplanted onto Mars, in an Andrew Stanton-directed picture. Next is the Phil Lord and Chris Miller-directed 21 Jump Street, a March 16th release starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as two screw-up cops who infiltrate a local high school drug ring. Finally, we have a new poster from the Tarsem Singh project, Mirror Mirror, a Snow White adaptation featuring Lily Collins and Julia Roberts which opens March 30th. Hit the jump to see the new posters.

Continuing on with the barrage of Super Bowl spots landing online today is the 30-second preview for G.I. Joe: Retaliation. I’ll admit I had absolutely zero interest in seeing this movie; that is until the first trailer was unleashed. Though I know relatively little about the Joe universe, Retaliation looks incredibly cool. This Super Bowl spot gives us a great deal of new footage, including a look at Cobra Commander, as well as some eloquent Jay-Z citation by Dwayne Johnson. I’m fairly certain the overriding theme of Retaliation is simply “badass.” In addition, we’ve got a few images of the movie tie-in action figures set to be released in anticipation of the sequel.

With director Michael Sucsy‘s The Vow opening on February 10, Screen Gems has provided us with five movie clips and eleven images from the film. Based on a true story, the film stars Rachel McAdams as a woman who loses all her recent memory in a car crash, including that of her husband played by Channing Tatum. The film focuses on McAdams trying to get her life back, anchored by Tatum’s struggle to make her fall in love with him again. The Vow also stars Sam Neil, Scott Speedman, and Jessica Lange. In last week’s “Top 5″ I spent the opening paragraph musing about my anticipation for Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire. I also promised the readers a quick “Before & After” discussion this week which would address whether or not the pic lived up to my expectations. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but said discussion will have to be postponed. I know, I know, I’m disappointed too. Fear not, though, I’m slated to check out the film tonight which means that I’ll be able to deliver on my promise, albeit a week late. In the meantime…
…This week’s “Top 5″ installment brings you interviews with the cast of Underworld: Awakening and the aforementioned Haywire, a gallery of recent films in retro poster form, an ultra-disturbing Rugrats live-action trailer, and all of our Sundance 2012 coverage to date. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

With director Steven Soderbergh’s spy-action pic Haywire opening tomorrow, I recently got to speak with most of the cast about making the movie. Starring MMA fighter Gina Carano as a burned spy who takes revenge against her handlers, Haywire also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill Paxton. I’ve seen Haywire twice now and it’s fantastic. On top of Carano’s star-making performance, the action scenes are some of the best I’ve seen in years. It’s absolutely something you should see in a theater.
During the press junket I got to speak to Channing Tatum twice. The first time we just talked about Haywire. However, the second time we covered a ton of other topics like what the last year has been like for him, his relationship with Soderbergh, how Magic Mike came together and it’s rating, what it was like working with Matthew McConaughey, and what happened to The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. In addition, Tatum revealed he has a small part in Soderbergh’s next picture, The Bitter Pill (which might now be called The Side Effects), and we ended talking about Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher - which he might star in with Steve Carell. It’s a crazy sounding movie. Hit the jump to watch.

Men are taught (or at least they should be taught) to never hit a woman. The lesson is based on the assumption that women are physically weaker and don’t have the strength to defend themselves (also, hitting people isn’t very nice in general). But what if the woman can not only hit back, but her job is to hit back and she knows how to hit back harder than anyone? In Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire, mercenary Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is that woman, and Soderbergh is unapologetic about having her hit in return. The film forces us to confront our convictions about the fragility of women, and where that belief comes from. Is the movie a blow for equality in showing that women can take and dish out a beating like a man? Is a woman’s physicality always sexual? Haywire doesn’t have easy answers to these questions, but it has no problem asking them under the cover of a badass European flavored action-thriller.

Magic Mike is a peculiar film. Had I simply been told that a movie was being made based on Channing Tatum’s experiences as a male stripper, I most likely would have brushed it off as silly. However, Magic Mike is directed by Steven Soderbergh. I’m always interested in what Soderbergh has to say, and he obviously saw something special in Tatum’s story that he felt warranted a feature film. The story finds Tatum mentoring a young protégé (Alex Pettyfer) and is said to be reminiscent of Saturday Night Fever, with Soderbergh calling it “sexy, funny, and shocking.” Tatum recently confirmed to Steve that the film would be hard R but would be lacking in the full-frontal nudity department, and now Warner Bros. has released a couple new images from the film that are sure to delight those who enjoy their men both naked and tuxedoed.
Hit the jump to see the images. You can also check out what co-star Matt Bomer had to say about the film and his character here. The film also stars Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Olivia Munn, Riley Keough, Cody Horn and Adam Rodriguez. Magic Mike opens June 29th.

Audiences currently have the chance to see Channing Tatum in a hard-hitting fight with Gina Carano in Haywire, but in March the buff actor will flex his comedy chops again alongside Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street. But between that, NBC has just revealed that Tatum will make his debut as the host of Saturday Night Live on February 4th along with fantastic musical guest Bon Iver. Normally I’m not a fan of Tatum in the least, but glimpses of his comedic work in the trailer for 21 Jump Street and his supporting performance in The Dilemma shows comedy might be where he fits best, even if he does look like an action figure.
In addition, NBC has also revealed that the charming and lovely Zooey Deschanel will make her hosting debut the following week on February 11th along with musical guest Karmin. New Girl has become a surprise hit on Fox, and that’s mostly due to the charismatic and hilarious work done by Deschanel as the quirky titular character Jess. It’s amazing it’s taken this long for Deschanel to hit SNL, but I can’t wait to see how both of these episodes turn out next month.

With director Steven Soderbergh’s spy-action pic Haywire opening January 20th, this past weekend I got to sit down with most of the cast to talk about making the movie. Staring MMA fighter Gina Carano as a burned spy who takes revenge against her handlers, Haywire also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill Paxton. I’ve seen Haywire twice now and it’s fantastic. On top of Carano’s star-making performance, the action scenes are some of the best I’ve seen in years. It’s absolutely something you should see in a theater.
During my interview with Tatum we talked about how he got involved in Haywire and what excited him about the project, filming the awesome action scenes, and working with Soderbergh. In addition, with G.I. Joe: Retaliation arriving this summer, I asked what can fans look forward to in the sequel. Hit the jump to watch.

It’s safe to say that Steven Soderbergh’s action pic Haywire looks fantastically badass. Both Brendan and I chose it as one of our most anticipated films of 2012’s first quarter, and now the first five minutes of the film are online for your viewing pleasure. While I’ve refrained from watching it as I’d like to go into the movie fresh, if you’re on the fence about the pic I highly suggest you check it out. They showed the first trailer at last year’s Comic-Con and I wasn’t too impressed, but immediately afterward Soderbergh screened a fight sequence between star/MMA fighter Gina Carano and Michael Fassbender that blew me away. Among the wealth of movie goods we were privy to at Comic-Con, that fight has stuck with me and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the film plays out.
Hit the jump to check out the clip. The film also stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, and Bill Paxton. Haywire opens January 20th.

In Novemeber, we reported that Steven Soderbergh had left the adaptation of the 1960s spy TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and turned his attention to The Bitter Pill with Scott Z. Burns (The Informant) writing the screenplay. The Playlist now reports that the film—now titled The Side Effects—has locked down financing and cast Blake Lively, Jude Law, and Channing Tatum in the lead roles. Lively will play, “Emily Hawkins, a woman who turns to prescription meds to cope with the anxiety of the upcoming release from prison of her husband.” Tatum will play the husband and Jude Law will play Hawkins’ new psychiatrist. This will be Lively’s first film with Soderbergh, but it will be Tatum’s third collaboration with the director (Haywire and Magic Mike) and Law’s second (Contagion).

With director Steven Soderbergh‘s great movie Haywire hitting theaters on January 20, earlier today I got to sit down with one of the stars, Channing Tatum, for an exclusive interview. While Tatum’s had a few movies released over the past two years, 2012 will see him invading multiplexes, as he’s got The Vow, 21 Jump Street, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Magic Mike all set for release before July. So while he’s been quiet of late, that all changes this month.
Anyway, while we’ve been covering Soderbergh‘s male stripper movie, Magic Mike, since its inception, not much was known about its ratings and the level of nudity. For those unaware, Magic Mike is based on Tatum’s real life experiences as a 19-year-old stripper and he stars alongside Matthew McConaughey Alex Pettyfer, Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Mangianello, Olivia Munn, Riley Keough, Cody Horn and Adam Rodriguez. So when we got to talking about the project, he revealed how it came together and what he wanted the movie to show. Eventually I asked about the rating and he said, “Hard R. It’s a very hard R. Not NC-17, we don’t want it to go that far. You’ve got a bunch of naked guys. It won’t be full frontal, it’s just thongs or whatever you want to call them and underwear.” Continued after the jump.

With director Steven Soderbergh’s spy-action pic Haywire opening January 20th, we’ve been provided with three clips and almost forty images from the film.
On top of Carano’s star in the making performance, the action scenes are some of the best I’ve seen in years. It’s absolutely something you should see in a theater. Hit the jump for the clips and images and look for my exclusive video interviews with the cast next week.
