CHARLIE ST. CLOUD DVD Review

I like Zac Efron. I think the guy’s genuinely talented and unfairly gets a bad wrap. He’s more than likely got a very successful film career ahead of him, full of deep and thought provoking films. Charlie St. Cloud is not one of those films.  St. Cloud is, of course, one of Efron’s first forays into straight dramatic fare and unfortunately it’s a bit of a misfire. Films like this come out of Hollywood all the time: great-looking small town star is subject to a tragic event, gets ostracized from said town and becomes great-looking emotionally damaged outcast in whom great-looking female takes an interest, much to great-looking female’s friends and family’s dismay.  Charlie St. Cloud is no exception to this cliché and, for the most part, plays like one. My review after the jump.

Weekend Box Office – INCEPTION Leads for Third Straight Week with $27.3 Million; DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS Takes Second with $23.3 Million

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: August 1st, 2010 at 9:59 am

After briefly giving way on Friday for newcomer Dinner For Schmucks, Inception is back on top for a third straight weekend. Once again, Christopher Nolan’s original thriller retained nearly 65% of its grosses from last weekend and is now looking to cross $200 million by midweek. Schmucks placed second with $23.3 million while the weekend’s two other wide releases, Charlie St. Cloud and Cats & Dogs 2: The Revenge of Kitty Galore became the latest disappointments in a summer that has seen little else.

Title Weekend Total
1 Inception $27,500,000 $193.3
2 Dinner for Schmucks $23,300,000 $23.3
3 Salt $19,300,000 $70.8
4 Despicable Me $15,500,000 $190.3
5 Cats & Dogs 2 $12,500,000 $12.5
6 Charlie St. Cloud $12,100,000 $12.1
7 Toy Story 3 $5,035,000 $389.6
8 Grown-Ups $4,500,000 $150.7
9 Sorcerer’s Apprentice $4,320,000 $51.8
10 Twilight: Eclipse $3,965,000 $288.1

Friday Box Office – DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS Number One with $8.4 Million; INCEPTION Second, CHARLIE St. CLOUD Fourth, Cats & Dogs 2 Can’t Compete

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: July 31st, 2010 at 10:15 am

Even with so-so reviews, a screen count deficit and TV spots that were kind of bizarre, the PG-13 comedy Dinner for Schmucks managed a first place finish on Friday – barely. Jay Roach’s comedy made an estimated $8.4 million from 2,911 locations; just slightly ahead of Inception. With another remarkable hold after 15 days, Inception is now poised for a third weekend at number one – unless Schmucks can convince the weekend crowd that it’s actually a sequel to Date Night. Universal’s Charlie St. Cloud placed fourth with $5.6 million from 2,720 venues. Finally, though Warner Brothers was clearly hoping for a G-Force-sized success with their sequel to 2001’s mid-level hit Cats & Dogs, the family film could not even break the top five on Friday. Cats & Dogs 2: The Revenge of Kitty Galore placed sixth with an estimated $4.2 million. And that was with a big screen count advantage and a 3D price premium at many of the film’s 3,705 locations. So the appeal of the talking, 3D animal has its limits after all! We’ll have full details tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 Dinner for Schmucks $8,400,000 $8.4
2 Inception $8,100,000 $173.9
3 Salt $5,900,000 $57.4
4 Charlie St. Cloud $5,600,000 $5.6
5 Despicable Me $4,700,000 $179.5

Director Burr Steers Exclusive Interview CHARLIE ST. CLOUD; Plus Updates on THIS MEANS WAR and EMPEROR

by Christina Radish    Posted: July 30th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Burr Steers made his feature film directorial debut with the acclaimed 2002 offbeat dramedy Igby Goes Down, for which he also wrote the screenplay. He then went on to co-wrote the hit romantic comedy Hot to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and, most recently directed 17 Again, which was the first time he worked with actor Zac Efron.

Now, he has re-teamed with the popular young actor on Charlie St. Cloud, which is Efron’s most adult and most emotional role to date. Adapted from the novel “The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud,” the story follows Charlie (Efron), who loses his younger brother (played by Charlie Tahan) in a tragic accident that changes his life forever, and explores the impact that grief can have on one’s life.

While at the press day for the film, Collider was given some time to speak with director Burr Steers about how his earlier work as an actor has affected his filmmaking approach, why he identified so deeply with Charlie St. Cloud, how he put his own stamp on the story and what it is that makes Zac Efron so appealing to audiences of all ages.  He also talked about what initially drew him to storytelling, his thoughts on 3-D, his rewrite of This Means War and his next project as a director, the period epic Emperor. Zac Efron Interview CHARLIE ST. CLOUD

Zac Efron has seamlessly made the transition to more adult roles, in a way that most younger actors only dream of. Following his work in the three High School Musical films, he has gone on to do both comedy and drama, with films like Hairspray, 17 Again and Me and Orson Welles. Now, he is playing his most vulnerable and emotional role yet, in Charlie St. Cloud.

Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name, Charlie St. Cloud tells the story of a small-town hero who survives a tragic accident, only to find out that his life has been changed forever. When Charlie (Efron) realizes that he can still see his younger brother Sam (Charlie Tahan), even though he’s dead, he vows to keep his promise to him and meet him every afternoon for baseball practice. And then, when his high school classmate Tess (Amanda Crew) returns home and sparks his interest, he becomes increasingly torn between his promise to his brother and his feelings for someone who is still very much alive.

During an interview to promote the film, Zac Efron talked about defining this character, working with director Burr Steers and striving for diversity in his film career. He also discussed his production company, Ninjas Runnin’ Wild, and the possible film slate that he’s hoping for. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Trailer for CHARLIE ST. CLOUD Starring Zac Efron; Plus 10 New Images

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 30th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

The trailer for the drama Charlie St. Cloud has gone online.  The movie stars Zac Efron as a young man who gives up sailing after his kid brother is killed in a car accident.  However, Charlie is able to see his dead brother and play catch with him every day.  This is all well and good until he falls in love with a girl who reignites his passion for sailing and his need to move on with his life.

It seems like this would be a more powerful story if it were about the relationship between a father and his deceased son rather than between two brothers.  Then again, that could also be too heavy for today’s delicate audiences.  It doesn’t really matter since this is one of those trailers that takes you through the entire plot of the movie.  Hit the jump and watch it at your own risk.  Charlie St. Cloud opens on July 30th.

BEASTLY Postponed to March 18, 2011; KNIGHT AND DAY Moved Up Two Days to June 23

CBS Films originally slotted Beastly for July 30th, which would have pit star Vanessa Hudgens against boyfriend/High School Musical co-star Zac Efron and his project Charlie St. Cloud.  In an effort to avoid forcing fans into such a Sophie’s choice, THR reports that Beastly will now debut nearly eight months later on March 18, 2011.  The studio wrote on the Beastly Facebook page:

“We’ve been hearing from fans, so we know that having both Zac and Vanessa’s movies opening on the same day could be a real dilemma for people, so we are moving Beastly.”

I do like the idea of this theoretical fan who would have been completely beside themselves on July 30th, completely unable to decide between which pretty actor to support first.  Hit the jump for details on the two-day bump bestowed upon the Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz action comedy Knight and Day.

17 AGAIN Director Burr Steers Will Depict a Teenage Julius Caesar in EMPEROR: YOUNG CAESAR

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 26th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

With savvy casting, the adventures of a young Julius Caesar are likely a box office gold mine, and Exclusive Media Group thinks Burr Steers (17 Again) is the man to helm the captain the ship.  Steers has been hired to direct Emperor: Young Caesar, an adaptation of the first two novels in Conn Iggulden’s acclaimed historical fiction series that details the rise of famed Roman emperor Gaius Julius Caesar.  William Broyles (Jarhead) and Stephen Harrigan (Cleopatra) penned the script, which sees Julius and Brutus (of “et tu” fame) raised to enter the Roman military.

Hit the jump for more, including a statement from Steers and speculation that a Zac Efron casting announcement may not be far behind.

New Trailer, Images and Poster for CHARLIE ST. CLOUD Starring Zac Efron

Today we get our first look at the romantic drama Charlie St. Cloud, which stars Zac Efron.  Based on the novel by Ben Sherwood, the film centers around a “young man who survives an accident that lets him see the world in a unique way.”  Alongside Efron, the cast includes Amanda Crew, Donal Logue, Charlie Tahan, Kim Basinger, and Ray Liotta.  Burr Steers (17 Again) directs from a script by Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge!) and Lewis Colick (Ladder 49).

The film doesn’t look like my cup of tea, but I hope for big things from Efron, and this seems to represent a step in the right direction away from teen stardom.  The beginning of his career his not all too dissimilar from that of Leonardo DiCaprio, if I may make a bold comparison.  Check out new images and a full plot synopsis after the break.

Release Dates for THE ZOOKEEPER, CHARLIE ST. CLOUD, THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU, CATFISH, CHEATERS, DEVIL, SANCTUM 3D, YOUR HIGHNESS,.jpg

From last night we have a slew of recently changed and freshly announced released dates to pass on.  Leading with the most telling move, Sony thinks their recent MGM acquisition, the Kevin James comedy The Zookeeper, has earned summer tentpole status [THR].  The studio pushed the release date for this talking-animal comedy from October 8th of this year to July 8, 2011, with Sony distribution president Rory Bruer remarking, “It’s got tremendous heart and soul.  And talking animals?  Gimme a break, it’s so funny.”  The animals who collectively function as Cyrano to James’s zookeeper are voiced by Sylvester Stallone, Adam Sandler, Jon Favreau, Judd Apatow, and Cher among others.

After the break, you’ll find dates for Charlie St. Cloud, The Adjustment Bureau, Catfish, Cheaters, The Night Chronicles: Devil, James Cameron Presents Sanctum 3D, Your Highness, and something called Ballers.

Kick Ass standee slice.jpg

In a few days ShoWest starts up in Las Vegas.  If you haven’t heard of ShoWest, it’s a convention for theater owners and operators to see what’s new in their industry and be wined and dined by the Hollywood Studios. Basically, it’s Comic-Con for the people that make big decisions in the movie industry.

But the other reason ShoWest is cool is the studios send tons of movie posters and theater standees to the convention to pimp what they have coming.  And while the convention doesn’t begin till Monday, a friend of the site was there tonight and was able to snap a number of photos of what’s already on display.  So hit the jump for the posters for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Little Fockers, Get Low, Beastly, Charlie St. Cloud, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, a 75th Anniversary 20th Century Fox poster, Ramona and Beezus, Mercy, The A-Team, The Losers, Toy Story 3 and theater standees for Kick-Ass, Nightmare on Elm Street, Clash of the Titans, and a lot more!
